We are voting on which one of the these director's movie you would want to see TODAY.  Of course past performance is part of the equation, but we should also be factoring in recent performance and what you think they will be doing in the future.  For the sake of the tournament, the ONLY information you have to decide between the two directors is something that reads "New Movie by _______".  There are no trailers, synopsis, or imdb page to look at.  I don't want it to be about theater experience either - what type of movies you usually pay for in the theater, etc..  I posted in one of the other threads this scenario: we all have the same home set up, so for the match pretend you get 2 blurays shipped to you in a blank case that reads "New movie by ______".  You have to pick one, and the other is destroyed MI style.

Seems strange that the Coen brothers would win a contest on what movie we would see today, when they released a total bomb just a few months ago.  But they are awesome, can't hold it against them.

Outside the wood chipper scene I really do not understand the love of Fargo.  Can someone explain why its so highly regarded?
A brilliant mix of humor, violence, dialogue, funny situations, acting, and overall story. The William H Macy character alone makes it worth watching.

I think for me it is the amazing acting performances of William H Macy, Francis Mcdowhatshername and Steve Buscemi.

I'd rather pass on both and take a couple of the earlier contestants.

If forced between these Coen by a country mile. If they do something it could be great. If Spielberg does something I know he's going to create a sappy mess or ruin my childhood.

I see.  Like the actors, but was bored and didnt find it that funny when I watched it.  Maybe I should watch it again.

:lmao:

So true.

Who was your protected winner at the beginning?

And yes, thanks.
Honestly, about what we got - I figured the winner of the Coens/Fincher fight would be the overall winner.  I just thought we would have a little different basing it on who we would watch now.  But as people admitted, some didn't read the OP and get what I was going for.  When I looked at the overall tourney, I thought it would be a Final Four of Tarantino, Nolan, Scorsese and either Coens or Fincher.  A lot of people seem to admit that the Coens are pretty hit or miss with them even as they vote for them.  Didn't expect that, and thought Fincher might win that match by a couple votes.  Overall, I just thought we would get a couple more runs like Affleck's over some of the older guys that have been coasting for over a decade.  It was fun though, and I was considering a dead director tourney next year.  An actor/actress one might be a bit much.

I didn't like it at all at first.  Same with o brother.  Then I really got into some of their more serious films like blood simple and no country, and of course lebowski.  Now I love Fargo and intolerable cruelty and even the man that wasn't there.

I am slowly trying to rewatch some of their older movies.  I have liked Fargo more and more when I watch it, and even Lebowski to a point.  O Brother is right up there with my least favorite movie going experiences ever.  I just rejected that movie with every fiber of my being when I saw it in the theater.  I have been dragging my feet getting to a rewatch of that one.

Have you seen blood simple?  No country is my favorite movie ever, and lebowski is probably second from their stuff.  But blood simple is oft overlooked.

It's a nice beginning to their career of "something bad happens, there is some confusion, and that causes some really really really bad stuff to happen" movies.

Also, intolerable cruelty is underrated because it came across as a slight love story with two bankable stars.  It's actually quite clever and they sprinkle just enough weirdness in it (clooneys blue teeth, billy Bob) to make it quite charming.

I liked A Serious Man. I think their worst is either The Ladykillers or Intolerable Cruelty and even they both had some things I liked about them (but wouldn't call them good at all).
Watching a schmuck get taken advantage of by everyone in sight was not fun or entertaining for me in any way. Whatever humor was supposed to be in place seemed non-existent. The abrupt ending just added to my dislike for it. One of my least favorite films in the past few years. And I usually like the Coen brother's films.

I actually loved the ending - I didn't feel it was abrupt (it was easy to tell what happened next - just when it looked like things were turning around for him he got some terrible news and would be getting even worse news later about his son).

The movie is a modern day take of the Book of Job (which is why so many bad thing happened to him). I liked the discussions on spirtuality and the main character a lot. I realize it was certainly slow and understand why people wouldn't like it.

Yeah, that is one of my favorites of the Coens.  I would have that up with No Country with Fargo behind them a little.  Nothing else has blown me away personally (still haven't seen a couple of them), but a few others I thought were good, but can appreciate the talent they have.

verbatim.

The Coen love on this board is ridiculous.
I get the love - they seem to be able to do everything very well, and tackle a variety of subjects.  I also think that people seem to be willing to overlook their turds more than some other directors in this thing.  Sure, they have their homeruns, but they have some absolute duds too.  IMO the highs of a guy like Fincher are right up there with the Coens' best (Zodiac, Social Network, Fight Club), but he doesn't have anything that is approaching the lows of the Coen Brothers.  I think same applies to guys like Aronofsky and PTA for me as well.

burn after reading was completely terrible.

but as bob said- you never really know what you're going to get with them, and the upside is tremendous (rip). ss is consistent, expertly crafted and schmaltzy. every movie of his is a 7-8. give me the 3-10 instead.

Blood Simple is really , really good but the 1st time seeing it is the best viewing. On the other hand O Brother was ok the 1st time for me and upon multiple viewings it's in my top 10-15 for the 2000s

O Brother... is a fantastic political philosophy and historical movie. It's excellent, and I loved it the first time I saw it.

I couldn't finish it.   I've meant to go back and restart, b/c I feel like I must have missed something due to all the love it gets, but that movie did nothing for me.
