Moving to Olympia, Washington.... (1 Viewer)

Looking for input on where to live, schools, etc. My job location will actually be in Dupont, WA. I work for FedEx. Married, with a 4YO daughter (5 in September), a son who will turn 3 this Saturday (4th of July baby), and our most recent addition... a baby girl who is 9 days old.

So, it will undoubtedly be a very crazy/hectic summer, particularly for my wife, who will be holding down the fort with 3 kids under 5, while I "commute" from MN to WA. Start date is July 27, and I will likely try to fly back at least every other weekend (as well as take a few vacation days here and there, so the trips home aren't so short).

We've moved a few times (this will be my 10th FedEx facility in nearly 20 years), and I'm guessing/hoping that, if all goes well, the family will be joining me in WA by no later than September. Even though my employer has a rent subsidy program as part of the relo package, we're leaning towards buying a house (again), which obviously takes a bit longer than finding a rental (in most cases).

Anybody from the area, or maybe lived there in the past? Looking to live no more than 30 minutes from work, preferably. Any input on stuff like parks (for the kids), golf courses in the area, as well as what is a good gym to get a family membership, would be greatly appreciated.

Olympia is my home town but I haven't lived there for 20 years. I still have family and friends in the area and visit occasionally but I'm probably not very helpful for school/park/gym information anymore. I grew up in West Olympia and went to Capital HS---it was, and I think still is, a pretty nice part of town and the school was solid. There are some nice golf courses in the area, and couple just outside of Oly on the way to Dupont that are fantastic.

I can recommend a great pediatrician, though. I went to high school with her and we trained in the same pediatric residency program. PM me if you want her info.

I just know that WA is a very good state to live in. Lived in Spokane for 7 years. Still go back for 2 weeks every year. Weather is good, people are friendly, scenery is tremendous. Fishing, golfing,=some of the finest. Prices for housing, food, etc. very reasonable if not cheap. Pretty sure you will really like it. I also lived in MN for 2 years. WA is better. IMO

check out hawks prairie area. some places in olympia will be more than 30 minutes to/from dupont.

I can't tell you much about the Olympia area, but in general I think living south and commuting North to Dupont is a better decision than living in the Tacoma area and commuting south.

 I went to Garfield, LP Brown and Jefferson - would have gone to Capital HS but moved out of the area before High School - still know some of the guys that I went to school with and went on to go to Capital.

For the OP, Olympia in general has some pretty different types of living - small urban neighborhoods, rural waterfront living, country club neighborhoods, track home suburbia neighborhoods, etc... just depends on what you are looking for. Plenty of nice golf courses within 30 minutes.

I don't have anything to add other than to wish you luck. If I ever move out of Minnesota it will probably be to Washington. Seems like a great place to live.

Some high praise.. :lmao:

Mn winters are pretty brutal compared to WA. That pretty much swings me toward WA in that outside endeavors are much more attainable for a longer time. Very good people in both though.

I have established residency in ND, MN, MT, CA, ID, & WA. I like the state of Washington the best, but they all have their allure. I've learned it's what you make of each situation. Making good friends was the key to an enjoyable experience in each state. They provide the info necessary to bypass all the BS & get right to the good parts of the area.

I moved from Seattle to Oly in 5th grade. Went 1 year to Garfield, Jefferson MS and then Capital HS. What year did you graduate high school?

Will do. Thanks.

Dupont itself is growing quite a bit. They have been developing that area a lot, so you may want to look there. Also you might want to look at Lacey, there are some nice neighborhoods there, and it's just north east of Olympia, a little closer to where you'd be working. Just stay away from Tillicum/Lakewood area close to I5 or South Tacoma. Those aren't the best neighborhoods. It you go closer to Steilacoom or University Place it gets nicer.

Again, I haven't lived up there for 20 years, but I'm pretty sure Olympia is still a more desirable place to live than either Spanaway or Puyallup.
