My brother, a lifelong Bengals fan, has vowed to become a Steelers fan (1 Viewer)

What are the odds? 0-7 right now... there's no way they go 0-fer, is there? They took the Giants to OT already earlier in the season, and when Carson Palmer comes back, you gotta figure they'll win at least 1 right?

As a Bengals fan, there is now a part of me rooting for 0-16. Mike Brown isn't changing anything any time soon, and if this doesn't make him change, then nothing ever will.

As for it being a reality, I can easily make a case for them being 0-15 going into their last home game versus a 1-14 KC team. Their only remotely winnable games remaining are @HOU, vBAL, @CLE, vKC.

ETA: I don't think Palmer is coming back. Actually I hope he doesn't. He needs to heal and be 100% for the next 6-8 years of his career, this season is long gone.

Either stick with your team or don't have a team. You can't just choose another team because your team sucks. The only acceptable circumstance where you can change allegiances is if your team moves out of your city.

How can he abandon the Bengals after being a lifelong fan ?It's unfortunate, but it may be time foryour brother to be fitted for cement shoes.

:penalty: Dead wrong. Loyalty is a 2-way street. I have a legal file folder filled with articles proving Mike Brown's treachery and ineptitude. Seriously. It hasn't been updated in about five years, but it's at least four inches thick.I stopped rooting for that embarrassing, incompetent loser franchise ten years ago, and I haven't come close to regretting it. They're dead to me.

I believe the rule is a year's probation. He'll have to sit out the 2009 season and can start rooting for the Steelers in 2010.

If I can still back the Buccos he should be able to stand by the Bengals. At least the Bengals have had non-losing seasons and actually made the playoffs in the past 16 years.

I also can't choose who my parents are and what city I live in as a child. Those are the two biggest factors in one becoming a fan of a team.Changing teams isn't a big deal, just do it and do it for good. Don't be a windsock

I agree with this even though I am a die hard Bengals fan. It gets difficult at times, yet I sit there happy at 1 PM every Sunday. At 1:35 however... ugh.To make matters worse, I watched "I Love the 80s" on VH1 with the wife last night. The year was 1989 and they showed the ####### Super Bowl!!! Argh!

:ptts: Most Bengals fans are also Reds fans. Double-whammy. At least you have an NFL team that actually tries to win games.

Kinda shows his character that when the going gets tough the tough gets going. If he is married or has a dog they better walk on egg shells around this guy or he is gone. With that attitude the Bengals will not miss him as a fan  . All in all there is no better team for this "guy" to be a fan of than Pittsburgh. Go 0-16 Cincy he won't be missed.

The Bengals will be missing an awful lot of fans . . . but those fans won't be missing the Bengals.Like I said, loyalty is a 2-way street. Letting a franchise continually walk all over you as they collect your money and spit in your eye is not a virtue.

Edit to add: When the going gets tough?! Are you serious?! The going has been tough since Mike Brown took over in 1991. Just look at the stats. Since 1991:

The Bengals have eight 0-6 starts. No other franchise has more than four.

The Bengals have five 0-7 starts. No other franchise has more than two.

The going didn't just get tough. If this guy hung with the Bengals through all of that nonsense, he deserves praise for his loyalty or jeers for his gullibility. But this isn't a guy who just willy-nilly decided one day to "give up" when the going got tough.

If his wife lied to him about her intentions and failed to give him any "pleasure" during their entire relationship, then he'd be a fool not to "start hiding money".

My season tix are up for grabs. I'll root for em, but I wont spend thousands on tickets and concessions to line Mikey's incompetent pockets. Hire a real GM and you'll have a chance at getting my butt in the seats again, else I will save my money and enjoy my couch or a sports bar.

I was actually hoping they would go 0-16. If they are gonna suck, may as well get a record out of it. My biggest fear is that they draft Beanie Wells. Couple reasons, first being that it would pretty much guarantee he would incur a career threatening injury right away, and the 2nd being that both lines need so much damn help that no amount of stud RB will fix it.

Also signing in on the Palmer to IR prediction.

So let me get this straight. What has this BS thread got to do with FF or even football?

Are you going to update us how he reacts to every Bengals or Steelers loss going forward? Should I provide T&Ps to all Bengal fans? Yeah, keep us updated .... we might all lose sleep over this great conversion.

WDIS threads are not allowed but I am amazed how mods allow such garbage to be posted in the Shark Pool (which is one of the reasons why we see multiple threads on the impt stuff because the original threads slide down to page 5 thanks to this nonsense).

Thanks for your input.

I don't see a problem in changing teams. I quit the Pirates about 15 years ago and saved myself from 15 seasons of horrible baseball. Enough is enough already. I see nothing wrong with making a team earn you as a fan and that's the problems with teams like the Bengals who care more about making a profit than about winning.

Totally agree with Fear and Loathing on this one.

Though I don't understand him becoming a Steelers fan. Find another division.

If true, your brother is not a life long Bengals fan. He is no fan at all. No true fan would abandon their team.

I am a life long Broncos fan, and they could go 0-16 for 10 years in a row, and I'd still be a fan. I would never in any circumstances become a Chief, Charger or Raider fan. I may on occasion root for one of those teams in a given week only if it helped the Broncos standing/playoff position, but I still would not be a fan of those teams.

Basically the way I figure it, your brother is either spouting off steam because of his frustration and when push comes to shove he will be back as a Bengals fan or he is a flake. I don't see any other possibilities.

I feel this guy's pain. I too am a reformed Bengal Fan. They lost me for good when they sold out and re-signed Chris Henry in the preseason. Now I simply scoff at their ineptitude. Screw you to all of you Steeler Fans who say we weren't true fans or whatever in the first place. You have no idea what we've been through. You're bitter that I didn't choose your team. I couldn't do that in a million years. That's like becoming a Democrat and rooting for Iraq. The town blows. Plus your team is composed of a bunch of cheap shot artists.

The only way I'm coming back to this team is if this franchise moves out and another one moves in or starts up a la Cleveland. Meanwhile, I did choose a new franchise for myself--go Panthers!

Dave Wannstedt & the rest of the Pitt coaching staff thank you.

Right. Because the truly important thing about which team to root for is not how they play, or who the players are, or the character of the organization or the people within it. The truly important thing is the color of the laundry.

As a Dolphins fan, I can't see any way that you'd root for your team to go 0-16. Last year, from the span of like 0-8 to 0-13, was literally an incredibly painful time to be a fan of the team. I honestly feel you don't know what you're saying, or the team couldn't really be that important to you, if you think it would be beneficial to put yourself through something like that. It won't teach anyone a lesson, it will only bring misery.

Relax with the serious talk and character assassinations. Dude likes the Bengals because they were his team of choice on Tecmo Super Bowl and because they were an archrival of the Steelers and he wanted to get on my nerves when we were kids. Both my brothers root for the Bengals for the same reason, and neither watches more than 2-3 Cincy games a year (usually the 2 Pitt games and whatever national appearance they make.) He probably sees twice as many Steelers games, and I suspect he secretly likes them. I guess he's sick of rooting for a team just to annoy me and sees how much fun it is to root for a team that competes for a title almost every year and has massive fan bases across the country. I suspect he goes into Steeler bars and knows how cool it would be to be a part of that, but doesn't want to just up and convert without a reason because he knows I'll abuse him for it.

Agreed. At best, this belongs in the FFA. I'm tired of seeing tangible threads getting pushed back due to threads such as this as well.

Then move it. Doesn't matter to me.. it was NFL-related, so I put it here. Thought it would engender some debate about the nature of NFL fandom, and it's done that. If that's not Shark Pool timber, so be it.

Maybe. Of course you always have this brand new option called "not opening the thread." Do you call your local TV station when you see something you deem inappropriate and ask them to pull it off the air instead of just turning the set off too?

No worries, some people like to ;) even if the wind blows too hard. Of course, he didn't have to read the thread or even post & comment, but then people like that wouldn't be able fill their quota of being negative.

Im still rooting for the bengals, I think they'll surprise people next season, biggest problem this year is Levi Jones and Ghiasuck, without a good center its very hard to run the ball they should probably move Whitworth to right tackle and Andrews to guard and draft OT Michael Oher and a center and we'll be back in business.

I hate to say it, but I agree with you. I also think they should have traded Chad Johnson to Dallas when they had the chance. If they could have gotten anything like what the Lions got for Roy Williams, they would have been back in contention as early as next season. I think Marvin Lewis has to go too, and I hate to say that because I think he's a good coach and I respect him.

got a Q, would it be wrong to bail on the Lions? After a decade of losing is it the team's obligation to offer a product that at least brings hope or promise for better times ahead?

Good stuff! I'm betting Cincy pulls the upset at Houston this weekend.
The Bengals are an enigma. Does team pride help them over the hump this week and allow them to "sneak up" on the Texans? I am not betting on the Bengals, but I I think they have a good shot to walk out of Houston with a "W".

Sticking by your team through tough times makes it that much sweeter when they finally get good. I know the Pirates have stunk for a generation, but I think if you really are a fan, you stick with your team - no matter what. It took the Red Sox what, 80 some years to win the Series? And the Cubs have had a longer dry spell? This topic is so not NFL or FFB, but I have a true appreciation for loyalty. Not that anybody should really give a damn one way or another :goodposting:
