My countdown list of one hit wonders- 1. Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry) (1 Viewer)

23. “Dancing In the Moonlight”- King Harvest (1972)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=g5JqPxmYhlo

Just a beautiful, feel good song from the early 70s. It’s been redone a few times but this is the best version IMO. Among my favorite songs of all time.
I dig
Yeah, it might be the Pinot talking, but I'm digging this, too.  I have only a vague recollection of it.  It's kind of sweet.  And the guy on the far right in the pic on the link looks a bit like Jon Snow.

It's one of those songs I have heard many times before but never knew who made and never remembered it enough to make note of it. However, the second I read the link Tim posted, I knew exactly what it was. A nice fun song- everything a 1 hit wonder should be.

I'm with ya 80s.

Regarding a lot of the music criticism here - I may agree - but I have lotsa great memories tied to some of these songs.

I am always going to like em - even if I rarely or never play em by choice anymore.
Some songs are so good that even if you don't have memories tied to them, you still feel like you do.

There’s those and there’s the opposite - songs that are not good but you still love to listen to because you have memories tied to them.

There have been multiple songs in both categories on Tim’s list thus far.

Hey K, I think I mentioned this in your Beatles thread - all of my cousins were 5 to 30 years older than me. The ones I spent the most time with were 60s & 70s kids, thus, I was lucky to get exposed to alot of this stuff young, even though I wasn't even born till 68.

I think exposure really affects me in regards to a lot of my memory connections.

How bout a Pinot pass for puff a my pipe, perhaps?

That is fair but I'm not quick to call too much successful music bad. If people really enjoy it then it's good enough for me IMO. I disagree with the ordering here on many songs but IMO every song so far has been good.

For about 30 years I thought this was Manfred Mann covering another Bruce Springsteen song. :bag:

BTW, the song was originally recorded in 1968 by a group called Boffalongo (which featured future members of King Harvest):

There’s going to be some arguments about some of the songs coming up. According to Anarchy99’s rules they do not qualify for OHW. One band in particular had another song that got all the way to #11 on the Billboard chart, and apparently a lot of people remember it. I don’t, and I don’t care.

Maybe I should have really called this thread “One hit wonders and signature songs” because some of my picks are actually the latter rather than the former. But again I don’t really care.

You're doing yourself a disservice.

DEVILED EGGS

candied bacon, spicy tomato sauce, sweet chili, chives.

This made our final three , but did not win.   We chickened out and got him some tacos.
You egg salad/deviled egg haters are whack!

That meal is a dream - just sub in some squirrel meat in place of the bacon & BAM - you got Eggs a Constant Sustenance!

you got Eggs a Constant flatulence!
Well duh!

Remember my bloated tummy issues?

I need all the jet propulsion I can get!

You just listed a feature - not a bug.

Gah - this seems pointless!

Tim, post another song that will distract these imbeciles away from my meal plannin' needs.

Next thing ya know - I'll be told possum ain't pot worthy...

Ah, the '70s. When a band that looks like a bunch of Hell's Angels on death row can make a groovy lounge record.

I wore this 45 out, sisters and brothers, and always smile when it pops up on the radio nowadays. I also bought the album based on how good I thought this single was......alas, there's a reason King Harvest is on this list and that's $4.98 I'll never get back.

Great pick, tim

25. “Get Together”- The Youngbloods (1967)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nBJYxPN8qIA

I think that perhaps only The Guess Who’s “Share the Land” matches this song In encapsulating the late 60s “let’s all love each other” hippie spirit. As easy as it is to make fun of this, we could use a little more of it now. A timeless classic.
Good song. Great song.

The Youngbloods qualify as a OHW, but another one of those very talented bands that had a lot of really good unheralded material.

Darkness Darkness is a lesser known “hit” but a standout track. Took it in a few music drafts over the years.

Jesse Colin Young had some good solo material, too.

22. “867-5309/Jenny”- Tommy Tutone (1981)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6WTdTwcmxyo

So as it turns out, Tommy Tutone is the name of the band, not the guy. Who knew? Also, the bass player for this band was later the bass player for Animotion.

I’m sure these guys believed that this song would be the start of a long, successful career in the music industry but sadly, Jenny changed her number. (And yes, I’ve been saving that awful joke since the start of this thread.)

Up next: this band’s obsession with teenaged girls, combined with criticism that the marketing campaign for their first record was a ripoff of the Beatles, made their success very short- lived.

Who thought reciting a phone number could be so catchy?  This is one of those songs I have heard so many times that I just know it by heart (despite never having gone out of my way to listen to it on purpose), but also one that I would be okay with never hearing again.

For ol' time sake, I just dialed this #.

No ring, but it connected - then - silence.

Either the # is still unused, or the new owner has become wary enough to be very selective b4 saying anything.

Quite sad either way.

Now, back to crank calling 911 - that's always a hoot!

Nice song, Tim.

zamboni say no

When I was a kid in Maryland, 867 was the exchange for every number I knew (didn't even have area codes to worry about back then).

Love this song, too. This has been a good run, all things considered. I'm surprised Sweet Soul Music drew one comment, and it was mine. My favorite memory of Sweet Soul Music is getting totally stoned in '97 and listening to a mix with it on while I um, well...forget it. I was doing something I shouldn't have been doing.
