My countdown list of one hit wonders- 1. Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry) (2 Viewers)

Up next: these guys from Kentucky were a one hit wonder only as a rock band. When they switched to country music a few years later they had a number of big hits but only on the country charts. But most people, including me, only know them for their no#1 hit on the pop charts- (Actually most people don’t know them at all, though they’ll recognize the song when they hear it.)

I don't know what I'd do without you Tim.   Don't know where I'd be.

Lead singer/guitarist of Big Country killed himself about 20 years ago. Sad. Looks like some of the original members still play together as Big Country from time to time.

The band moe. does a great cover of In A Big Country. One of their most popular songs.

Certainly even sadder than Bryant "Big Country" Reeves' NBA career.

Oh tim... I could just kiss you.

And this band put out a Greatist Hits album in 1986.

The bass player in Big Country (Tony Butler) was preciously a big session guy. Backed Pete Townshend, among others, such as here.

ETA: Dr. O beat me to it, but not sure other band members were involved.

They were Pete Townshend's backup band on his Empty Glass record.
Looked it up - only bass player Tony Butler indeed played on all of Empty Glass. Most of the rest of the band (sans Stuart Adamson) also backed up Roger Daltrey on his solo album (and tribute to Keith Moon) Under A Raging Moon.

On UARM, the drummer (Mark Brzezicki) was one of many - along with Martin Chambers, Roger Taylor, Cozy Powell, Stewart Copeland,  Zak Starkey and Carl Palmer - who played the drum solo on the killer title track (starting at the 3:57 mark).

Brzezicki played a lot of studio sessions in the early/mid 80's. He played on most of the tracks on The Cult's Love album, except She Sells Sanctuary and 2 others.

You guys are really good at this- or are my clues too easy?
Both. Your clues are too easy, but there are about 2(00) dozen folks following this thread who know about the songs/artists than you do.

I'd back off the clues for your upcoming songs if it bothers you that someone's going to guess them.

I sincerely hope not. Rick Springfield had 17 Top 40 songs. Of course, that's the only one that ever gets played these days.
But whether or not Tim is familiar with the other 16 is all that matters. Given Jessie's Girl is the only one that ever gets played anymore, odds were good that he wasn't. But he already chimed in and said he was.

Soggy Bottom Boys?

Woot - woot - woooooo-ey!!!

Up next: The bass player on this song had a long and successful career as a professional formula, endurance, and NASCAR driver...

This is an incredible endeavor.  Over the past week I've scoured my brain and realized I couldn't even come close to generating a top 100 list in the category.  Stuff I thought was the "one" hit from an artist turns out to be one of several, or more often the one song I thought was a "hit" was popular only in my corner of the world.  My slam-dunk sure-fire #1 ("There She Goes" by The La's) didn't even  make the US top 40.  Anyway, in the midst of whining and complaining (including by me), I wanted again to give you kudos for this undertaking.

Pretty sure I've never heard the last three songs before. I've heard of the title In A Big Country but it doesn't sound familiar.

68. “Walking on Sunshine”- Katrina & The Waves (1985)

FTR- the song this band wrote that was covered by the Bangles was “Going Down to Liverpool”. That in turn got them noticed by Capitol Records and the rest was history.

Couple things I really like about this tune besides its cheerful upbeat lyrics and melody: the fast speed that the band is playing, particularly the drums, and how sweet the vocals are: she sounds like Smokey Robinson to me. A timeless classic.
