My first player nominated for our auction... (1 Viewer)

I'm notorious for throwing out kickers only during our auction. I find it funny when others are throwing out big names to hit them with a kicker. I also get annoyed that our auction seems to take forever, so here is my planned move...

We randomly draw cards for order. My plan is to say "Lets move this thing along and get some big names out of the way...Steve Smith WR Giants one dollar." And hope to find some people asleep at the wheel and start bidding him way up.

Good move or no?

no one will fall asleep. there are lots of strats to auction and thowing out players. really comes down to how your league mates act from previous history.

oh yea

If you're playing with a bunch of newbs trying to introduce them to FF, it's a #### move.

If you're playing with a bunch of vets, you just look like a moron to everyone else for trying.

Generally it's better to nominate sleepers like A. Peterson of the Bears early and target them, while the big names are getting the high bids.

Oh they'll all be laughing -- at you when you lose out on LT by a buck because you got stuck with the Giants' 4th string WR for $1.

Instead of trying to be tricky, I'll just throw out someone who I am really not interested in that I know will be expensive so i can try to reduce some bankroll out there.

Exactly - the only humour would be if you get stuck w/him.I guess it might be funny if the league is all pre-teens or something.

what does this t-shirt thing mean?
Good question, I don't know either, and that little picture on the shirt is too small to decipher!someone in the know, please spill the beans!
I'll give it a shot. The original thread on the shirt is probably still out there. The overall reference is to an extremely lame T-shirt that someone was trying to sell on the message boards 2-3 years ago. It had a bunch of FF excuses written on it (that's the graphic on the shirt) with things like injuries, tackles at the 1-yard line, etc. and the catchphrase was that when you lose, you can "point to the shirt"You need to see the thread to fully understand...

 Guys in my league would abuse anyone trying such a bush move. And would it really work more than once, if at all?

Why not throw in Priest Holmes instead... you won't look like a guy that wants to screw the others with cheapshots, you might get a bargain, you might start a frenzy that will help you in the long run...

Thanks for the memories. Seriously, that may have been the funniest thread ever. I still laugh whenever I see that icon.

It's funny to joke about that kind of thing but to actually do it? Meh, I don't find it all that amusing and I love practical jokes. To each their own but it sounds like an immature move.

Now tossing out a kicker (or some other menial position) isn't bush league-it's being smart at the auction and looking to grab some great value early.

The standard auction strategy seems to be throw out high-profile names you don't like in the hopes other owners spend a good chunk of their salary on those guys early. I've found that most of the time this creates a buying opportunity on the 1st few names thrown out as people don't want to get in too soon or need a little time to ease into the auction. You won't get an extreme steal, but you might get a guy at a good 10% bargain or something.

Not only lame, but no hope of working.

Even if it works on a few guys, at least one owner will ruin it right away by calling you on it. So why bother?

I know that I can also use the homer aspect of my league and have owners toss away a few extra bucks. After that top tier of Wrs are gone I will be throwing out Bobby Wade. He could actually be OK but he will go way to high in my league.

Its even better (or worse) when you start it off with...

"The best WR in football.... Steve Smith ... <pause>... of the giants..."

Try and get an accomplice to say something while you mention the Giants. :ptts:

Why not one up it and see if you can steal the good Steve Smith with "The best WR to come out of Southern California...Steve Smith, WR for the [whisper] panthers." No one has to know you're referring to Santa Monica Community College, not USC.Either way, have more confidence in your ability to select players then resorting to bush moves

You won't find many in NY that wouldn't at least give ya a little run there on Steve Smith.

Plax and Amani have been out alot and he's looked great.

also can back fire on you and you just wasted a roster spot. Again, depends on how smart your league is, which has been covered here.

I am a fan of the early kicker or defense throw out though. Pick the best (Chicago D for $2 lets say, in a $100 league) you win either way. No one bids up you got the top ranked D at a decent price, they bid up and they just overpaid for a defense..(or kicker)

I don't think the "throwing a defense or kicker out there" works as well as putting out high-profile players who will take up a lot of other owner's cap.

But it still helps getting owner's to overpay.

I think the best players to throw out early are the 2nd tier TEs. Especially after Gates has been overpriced, other owners are targeting some of these guys and will overbid to get them.

Having Gates go for 33% of a cap is sweet, but having the V. Davis's and Shockeys going for 25% is sweeter imo.

Our commish warned our league 3 separate times about Steve Smith including the days leading to the draft. One of the owners wanted the NYG versio as a backup, and bid him out at $1 which I raised to $2 immediately, cuz I also knew it was the NYG one. Then someone bid $20 and they were off to the races. We even were yelling in the chat room that it was the wrong one. Bidding stopped at $25 and the owner begged to be let off the hook, but alot of us objected since there had been numerous warnings that you would get stuck if you bid on the wrong player. Of course, now he has 12.5 in cap after he dropped him to use after the draft so it may work out for him in the long run.

Thought this thread was going to be Michael Turner to make the person planning to get LT to overpay for him.
