Wow. Complicated. But so coolthe cpa was all over the effin place and i am beyond annoyed.have acquired the services of a CPA and will discuss visa tax ramifications Monday.
at this point, i think my next conversation with my wife is that we do the 6/6 thing. 3mos. italy, 3 mos. US. problem is, i will need to resign my job, as my employer allows remote work, but not outside the US….unless i can get an exception. i work for a bank and its a security thing. the visa aspect is becoming way too complex from a tax angle and, if i need to quit my job anyway, we can just do the back and forth. wife only gonna work another 3-5 yrs max. i’ll need to keep a place to live in the US, but in 2019 we bought a beach condo. i think i sell my main house and bank the cash and then do the 6 mos at the beach. i think june-aug and dec-feb in italy and mar-may sep-nov US. we miss most of the beach tourist crowd. we get to keep our doctors and US taxation. i suppose i can get one of those online TEFL teaching jobs to get some personal play around cash. wife earns more than me anyway. at the end of the day with a visa or in my above 6/6 scenario, i wouldn’t have my job. simplify
and my irrigation pump apparently has no electricity. it was working in may, but not now. unless these guys that went to use it are morons. which is always a high possibility.Wow. Complicated. User name checks outI'll be in Florence for 8 days during that time but not likely traveling outside of it.
reportedBumping this in case a mod sees my post in the Jayrod's thread and doesn't get the joke.
I'll take the over on that for 20 creditssince this is here, monday we have a virtual call with a pool company to take a look at my site and give me some options. a pool for 2 middle agers without children is the stupidest thing to do, but we are thinking…..the space is just too good to not check costs. no waterfalls, no hot tub. just a simple in ground. i am saying 25k, i could budget that, but who knows over there. if it is a no go, so be it. of course a simple hand rail on my internal stairs is much more important, it is actually harder to find a carpenter than a pool company. god, i love that country!
yeah, that is my fear. but size matters, right?I'll take the over on that for 20 creditssince this is here, monday we have a virtual call with a pool company to take a look at my site and give me some options. a pool for 2 middle agers without children is the stupidest thing to do, but we are thinking…..the space is just too good to not check costs. no waterfalls, no hot tub. just a simple in ground. i am saying 25k, i could budget that, but who knows over there. if it is a no go, so be it. of course a simple hand rail on my internal stairs is much more important, it is actually harder to find a carpenter than a pool company. god, i love that country!
I had a nice life growing up because if union labor. My brother and nephew in the UAW (not big 3)
I’m in favor of people getting paid, but I also worry this will lead to more and more jobs being replaced by automation and/or moved to mexico
Also what it will do to the price of cars (or at least the big 3) and more selfishly the impact on my own bonus
I hope we do more of our own manufacturing but from what I read, we’re moving everything out of China and into Mexico and the Asian Pacific.
Not a prayer. Maybe in 1989.yeah, that is my fear. but size matters, right?I'll take the over on that for 20 creditssince this is here, monday we have a virtual call with a pool company to take a look at my site and give me some options. a pool for 2 middle agers without children is the stupidest thing to do, but we are thinking…..the space is just too good to not check costs. no waterfalls, no hot tub. just a simple in ground. i am saying 25k, i could budget that, but who knows over there. if it is a no go, so be it. of course a simple hand rail on my internal stairs is much more important, it is actually harder to find a carpenter than a pool company. god, i love that country!
i don’t know if i can go fiberglass, cement, etc.
i would hate to do above ground and ruin land and views, which is why we thinking in ground. gonna try the KISS method and go from there.
I don't have a pool but I know 3 people who have had one installed in the last few years. Sadly Ron is spot on but I'm not familiar with Italy so who knows? Maybe it's cheaper. Everyone here ranged from $85k to $100k. One guy did a lot of the work himself, that's the low number, one guy contracted it all out, that's the high number. The other guy had a pool but didn't want one deeper than 4' so he had it ripped out and poured a new oneNot a prayer. Maybe in 1989.

You can. There’s people our here that rent their pool/backyard out for parties.Makes me wish I could sell my inground pool. Maybe I can rent it out...![]()
just saw this post but yeah, it’s all red tape and who know. luckily, the italians are just as confused as me.X, if you don't know this by now, or haven't heard it.
Bureaucracy, red tape and administration will kill your soul here in europe. France is baaaad and italy is worse. Impossible to get answers. MONTHS waiting for the simplest things.
Just be prepared. Please.
lots o scrilla, no?Might have to do the Golden visa in Portugal instead.
i missed this post…..by all means, ask away. arezzo is a nice smaller city and has a famous open air antiques market. in my neck of the woods.Chem X - would love to get some advice/guidance from you if you would ...
our daughter is going to spend her next semester in Arezzo and we're going to visit her for a few days and then would like to spend some time in Italy - probably focused mostly around Rome, but open to any/all suggestions
we typically like to go to a place and explore non-rushed as opposed to a city-a-day type group tour
we have never been to Europe before so we'll be way out of our element - and I have a ton of questions ...so before I start unloading with them - I figured I'd better ask you if you're good with offering some experienced advice
TIA
so, we continue to pursue the visa, but the passive income requirement is a moving target for us right now. we have had past discussions about bailing on the u.s. in favor of Malta and doing the schengen shuffle from a closer venue. then, in 2-3 years, once we can freely access 401k and IRA funds, setting up a passive stream to supplement SSI to cover the requirement. I would have to rent an apartment in Malta, but this is becoming a stronger possibility.Might have to do the Golden visa in Portugal instead.
no ties to allow for that. we have no path, we are not italian.Chem X have you not looked into getting Italian Citizenship. Talked to my sister we may get the ball rolling and split the 7K cost because then with dual citizenship I believe I am not susceptible to the 6 month limitation of staying in Italy and can stay year round. That is my end goal to buy a place in Campagnia region and live there year round and come back to the states for small periods of time.
Interesting on the Malta angle.so, we continue to pursue the visa, but the passive income requirement is a moving target for us right now. we have had past discussions about bailing on the u.s. in favor of Malta and doing the schengen shuffle from a closer venue. then, in 2-3 years, once we can freely access 401k and IRA funds, setting up a passive stream to supplement SSI to cover the requirement. isn't switzerland hyper clean and expensive?Interesting on the Malta angle.so, we continue to pursue the visa, but the passive income requirement is a moving target for us right now. we have had past discussions about bailing on the u.s. in favor of Malta and doing the schengen shuffle from a closer venue. then, in 2-3 years, once we can freely access 401k and IRA funds, setting up a passive stream to supplement SSI to cover the requirement. BTW, my wife applied for another job in Geneva this last week. She got shortlisted last time and then turned it down once she had more interviews. She didn't like the managing director, who has since left and been replaced by a guy she likes a lot better.
Anyone know anything about Geneva? I've never been.
I know, not my jam really, but if the adventure presents itself...isn't switzerland hyper clean and expensive?
i would do anything international, especially if the visa is being sponsored. i am sure the pay is reflective of the economy. so close to france and italy you can probably smell it too.I know, not my jam really, but if the adventure presents itself...isn't switzerland hyper clean and expensive?
Pretty, safe, lot of expats. Expensive.Anyone know anything about Geneva? I've never been.

I assume the frat parties there have barrels of wine instead of beer?GLLLLLLLLLLLL being a student again. Maybe you can go to some frat parties.
It’s online, correct?it is a 20 hour a week requirement, so 4 hoors a day doesn’t seem difficult. i am also sure this isn’t 20 hoors a week for 52 weeks. i would believe and am confirming with our attorney that we need to sign up for a 1 year class, that meets 20 hours a week to satisfy the visa. if it’s 20 hours a week for 52 weeks, well……i am sure it’s an on again off again program over the 1 year.
