My Morning Jacket (1 Viewer)

A lot of people Ive talked to who werent feeling his new solo album and then saw him perform it live have changed there tune about it. Im still not really digging most of it, but I have a feeling his shows will be/are good. His performance on Fallon a couple weeks ago was pretty awesome.
Kind of a Bob Dylan vibe going on there.

So I was watching a series on Starz called Magic City, and they closed an episode with a verson of Don't Be Cruel that I could have sworn was Jim JamesTurns out it was a 70s artist named Billy Swan, but tell me this doesn't sound like JJ:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAdmzIStZbE
Wow - eerily similar.

I would recommend a JJ solo show if he's in your area. Saw him in Columbus last week and it was a fun show.

Got early entry with my buddies Roll Call membership. Instead of being 2nd/3rd row standing on the floor (nothing wrong with that) we went up on the balcony. Ended up 2nd row extended if looking at the floor with a perfect view of the stage and a railing to lean on in front of us, very awesome and easy to hold for beer/bathroom breaks.

Something really special about JJ on stage and alot of people just don't know about him (we were crunching these thoughts post show hanging out on campus). Show seems short on paper, but they jam out most of the songs and they did some cool stuff. Wish there was one or two more MMJ solo songs, but maybe that's just me being selfish. They really crush the Monsters of Folk stuff too. Very "technological" show...the side guitarist is pumping in all kinds of stuff from his Apple laptop, some songs more than others. Our side view allowed us to watch him do all this and we had a view of the screen (too far away to tell what was on it though, but it was cool). The only potential disappointing aspect was I don't think JJ actually played the 1st sax solo of his 4 total on the night, I think they piped that one in. The sax solo on "Know Til Now" is a little more complicated than the others and he was moving all around and nothing looked "in sync". The other solos he played standing still into a mic.

After we hung out on campus for a hour or so after the show we headed back towards the venue to grab a cab. We saw Kevin Ratterman (played the keys and he worked on Circuital) walking out of the venue with a few people. Had a quick handshake/conversation with him...definitely was heading out to crush High Street.

Cool. I'm going to see him next week in Dallas. Also decided on balcony seats for this one.

Edit: Looks like he plays all songs from his new album, leaves stage, and then the encore is all MMJ, MOF, and other covers.

Our venue was all GA. We were standing the entire time, but able to lean on the railing. The only seats in the balcony were way in the back and were probably last to fill up. If you have assigned seating I'm thinking they'll be better than what this venue had.

Yes, their sets are very standard. Have not looked at the most recent one's, but just about all had one MMJ song which will be JJ solo to start the encore. We got "Wonderful...", was really hoping for "Bermuda..." but it was still sweet. Have the entire song on my phone and it is great. They were playing the same 4 MOF songs and that one New Multitudes cover every show leading up to Cbus.

Enjoy! And be prepared, it's not as mellow as you would think. Kinda trippy too. :headbang:

Didn't notice at first glance, but he's playing the album straight through in order.

I really hope we get "Wonderful". That song has meant a lot to me since my dad died last February.

Looks like you got it. Was the full show only 11 tunes?
We didn't actually. I saw a review that claimed "Wonderful" was played, but it wasn't. Best I can guess is that the writer got it confused with "Hopefully".He played 13 songs. Just under two hours IIRC.

9 songs from new album

I didn't know there was a new album. Is it any good? Circuital grew on me, though it's not my favorite.

Yeah, I like it. Mostly low key and "dreamy" since it's a Jim James solo album. He was on Letterman last night.

I'm going to this Americanaram Music Fest at the end of the month. Excited to see MMJ. Not a big fan of Wilco, and Dylan probably sounds like death these days. Also heard Bob Weir is gonna be there.

Nice. I still dont love the album but its grown on me, and by all accounts the live solo shows have been great. I wish I had a chance to see him on the solo tour, was hoping to go to Shaky Knees Fest in ATL but it didnt work out. Stoked for Americanarama though, even if I only get like a 75 min set from MMJ, and Dylan has his typical off night these days.

Thanks for posting that Quez. I am going Sunday night to the show in Nashville for my 50th birthday (what better way to celebrate my own impending decrepitude than to see a 72-year-old warble out 50-year-old tunes).

My wife knows nothing of Wilco or MMJ and I want to play some of the songs for her on the drive up (I'm in Louisiana, so I've got time to teach her a few tunes).

Of the sets above, ii looks like Dylan's is a bit of a disappointment. He's not doing some of the better songs of his past few tours.

Is anyone going to this in January? One Big Holiday

Looks pretty amazing. Very tempted...
Sounds awesome, when I saw it in my email I immediately checked it out but its pretty pricey. I think $1300 per person for 4 days and that doesnt include travel costs (Im assuming it includes ticket prices)
Did the same. Actually been looking at Mexico for next Spring and this is very pricey. It's all about the experience though. And that kick ### dance party on the 4th night!

So Im guessing MMJ and Wilco's sets are basically about the same length? In that set, MMJ plays a few less songs but there's a handful there that they jam out, whereas I dont think Wilco does as much besides Art of Almost (but I could be wrong). I assumed based on the billing, MMJ would be playing before Wilco, but Im happy if theyre both playing what look 75+ min sets. Dylan's set, not too surprisingly, looks pretty short. I think the 1-2 shows Im going toon this tour have Ryan Bingham opening instead of Weir, so Im hoping he gets less time as well (also, why even add another opener to these 3 heavyweights?!!!)

Just looking at that MMJ set, Im a little meh on how many standards and newer songs are there, but I guess thats to be expected on this kind of tour.

I enjoyed the show in Nashville last night and while my 50-year old face did not melt, I thought MMJ put on the best set of the night. They ended with Victory Dance, Mahgeetah, and then Gideon and it was a memorable finish. I was a little disappointed in Wilco who's set was very mellow, but they played Passenger Side so I was happy. Dylan remained upright for the entire performance so I consider that positive. His voice is beyond atrocious, but I am glad I got to see him and my wife actually liked him. Good stuff.

Nice. When did MMJ start and was there a 4th band that opened up before them? About how long did they play?

Bob Weir was the opening act. He played for about 30 minutes. He joined both MMJ and Wilco for a couple of songs. He played the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows" with Wilco and it was sensational. I believe that this show was the last for Weir on the tour. Richard Thompson will be the opening act for the next couple of weeks and then Ryan Bingham. MMJ, Wilco and Dylan all played for about 75 minutes. Everything was on time. Weir started right at 5:30 and MMJ at about 6:15 or 6:20.

I just looked at their set actually, the end run you mention is nice, but you also got a War Begun and Masterplan, plus Weir playing Brown Eyed Women and I Know You Rider with the Jacket. Id be ecstatic if I got something like that this tour.

ETA: Actually, nevermind I cant because like you alluded to Bingham is opening the show Im going to.

Any other fbg reviews from this Americanarama tour?

Mulling going to the Saturday show near Boston, weighing pros/cons of ditching the family on what looks like a pretty nice beach day...would likely catch MMJ, Wilco a couple of Dylan songs then screw, or maybe skip Dylan altogether? 5:30 start w/ an act before MMJ...what time does Wilco wrap up? Is the 10 song set enough of an MMJ fix or too much of a tease for someone going mostly to see them, though I am also a Wilco fan....

So you might not go because of a nice beach day, but also would skip Dylan and leave early as well? Sort of sounds like you have your mind made up already. One of my best friends I got into MMJ a few years ago saw this tour in Memphis a couple weeks ago, said MMJ was awesome, Wilco blew (he's not a fan FWIW), and Dylan was great. If it were up to me, the order would be Wilco, Dylan, MMJ just based on show energy, but thats a whole other animal.

Ive seen MMJ around a dozen times I think, all of those times they were either the only band or the headliner though. While Id certainly prefer the 2 and a half hour shows Im accustomed to, Im fairly excited to see them next week because it was highly suspected they wouldnt even be touring this year (heavy schedule last year, plus Jim's solo album this year), theyve been busting out a couple fan favorites/rarities every show, and because Ive never seen Dylan live before. I know he's hit or miss at this point, but call it a bucket list type of thing. Ive always liked Wilco, but only have a couple albums, so to me thats an added bonus. If they played Art of Almost and a couple off Summerteeth I'll be a happy camper.

Of all the times Ive seen MMJ, only time I wasnt within 10 feet of the stage was because my friend wanted pav seats. In all likelihood though, I'll probably opt for lawn seats for this tour because of MMJ playing a short set and ticket prices more expensive than usual. IIRC, MMJ has consistently been starting around 6:15 and playing a 75 minute set. Wilco starts around 8, also plays a 75 minute set.

I keep checking the setlists and MMJ/Wilco have collaborated on some fun tunes. Cinnamon Girl, Tomorrow Never Knows, a few other gems. Youtube has a bunch of them (quality is hit or miss ).

Finger banged YY tonight!

Was leaning on the left side of the stage until after Wonderful, then fell back. Late arriving crowd in Tulsa. I even got there towards the end of the opening chick's set. Same show essentially as the first go around in the Spring but they jammed some songs out a bit different I think. I have ridic video of All Is Forgiven and State of the Art. Likely never be that close again at any show ever. Gonna miss Bridge School by a few weeks in Oct...bummer...that is going to be a great set.

I havent listened to Jim's album since maybe last year (when I acquired it early). Its probably time to dust it off and see if its grown on me.

I enjoy the album when I listen, which isn't too often. It's chill to me, it's compact, it gets the job done. Good to fall asleep to or listen at work....not jamming in the car.

The difference is, it shines live...partly due to JJ's greatness, but also the other band members are talented and they put on a solid show. They really jam it out, anything from massive bass boosts that penetrate your skin to trippy Floyd-esque sound. I'd go to another tonight if I had the chance and it would virtually be the same show again. I wish they'd mix it up more in the encore, but I'm sure they are limited in that regard.

Bridge School streaming in it's entirety (8.5hrs) on MMJ site. MMJ/Neil - Harvest Moon is very nice, as HM always is.

Also, next month there is a love song covers compilation album on which Jim covers Marley's Turn Your Lights Down Low. I think its a great cover that Jim gives his own sound.

MMJ also released a totally new song on the recent Dallas Buyers Club soundtrack (good soundtrack btw) called Ready To Be Called On. Cant find a link for it but its on spotify. Solid song, should be a pretty good jam live. I wonder if theyll play down in Mexico.

I figured they are going to give us a good taste of the new album. They have 3 nights to dabble.

The shows will be recorded (audio) and downloadable with a special code. I will share.

Oh, for sure. I was told Ready To Be Called On has been on the shelves for awhile by the main mod at MMJ's forum though, so its definitely not something all that new in reality, and Im guessing it wont be on the new album. I really hope they play it though - plenty of time during a 3 night run for them to, why not?!
