My condolences. If my kid even sniffed hip hop, I'd strap a pair of Sennheisers to his head, get him stoned and not let him up until he was well-versed in Duke, Son House, Miles, and Bach. #### that ####. Turn him onto real music.

All he's gotta do is sell 20 a day and he'll be able to pay rent and maybe even afford a McDonalds value meal for dinner every night.

He says he has 6 songs and is putting out an album in a month or two. Supposedly opening for someone at a gig or two.

Tonight he comes in to tell me he's going to start a clothing line. I nearly roflmfao but I only smirked and rolled my eyes in condescending fashion. He said some store is going to let him pick out the clothes he wants in return for a shout-out on stage.

I'm like focus. Get a following. See if you're successful at that. It's very hard to make it in the clothing business. He thinks he's going to sell hats and that a local store agreed to carry them.

Its time to stop supporting your son's dream and give him a healthy dose of reality.

Alright - this stuff is horrible. Did he go to the Willie D school or rhyming or something? Just bad... make him stop please.

Rap hasn't been about artful lyrics for 15 years now, so his chances of making it big are better than they ever were.
Mos Def is pretty cool. I think I'd agree if you said "Corporate Rap hasn't been about artful lyrics for 15 years now."
Not that I disagree but to Cali guys talking about what's good lyrically is funny...
Bam! Because someone from California has no idea what good lyrics are.Have I been transported into Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo?

I got my first six string...bought it at the five and dime....

They work fine on my iPad until I hit reply. Same with paragraphs not showing up. I'd appreciate the shortcuts.

I'm not supporting his dream. He needs to fail on his own. Unfortunately it may take a few fails to hit home. I'm already prepared for the first public fail to result in a comment such as,"Eminem froze and was booed off the stage. Didn't stop him."

He needs to fail on his own.
Not necessarily. If you're going to pay for them anyway, why doesn't he just take fine arts/acting/music classes at CC? Then you could "support his dream" as well as push him in a direction academically that he is already interested in.If it was good enough for Tupac, Nicki Minaj, Slick Rick, Kanye West, Dana Dane, and Azealia Banks, why not him too? It couldn’t hurt. After all, if he makes it as a rapper, the next step is obviously acting right? He might as well get those drama classes out of the way now.Nerds are an “in” thing now. Look at Donald Glover. Look at Drake. Like that article said, succeeding in school & becoming a multi-talented artist will gain you just as much credibility these days as “surviving the streets” would.

If I were an idiot teenager I'd want someone who knows better to spare me the embarrassment.

Second song Rap Tour is actually one of his friends (and cousin of B-Boy who did the beat on the first song) who started the song with the first few verses and got stuck. YW (son) Featuring B-Boy added the last verse to complete the song. YW comes in at about 2:14 for reference.

The kid in the car in the pic is Word Man. Son had no control over that since it's not his song.

You should be saying, "End this. Now."
Yeah, because no one can crush a dream like a parent.
I think this is a dream that needs crushed by anyone at this point.
Anyone can tell you "this will never happen." That's easy. The hard part is actually doing it. It's not that I think this kid will make it. Odds are, even if he's talented and works hard, he will not succeed. But the world's full of people that tell you that you won't succeed. If that advice was taken every time, no one would ever accomplish anything special.

Exactly. What is the harm? He's not going to ruin his life.

Don't listen to the people telling you to make him stop. Better yet, don't subject your son to the hate on this forum.

His peers will provide the direction he needs. If he gets better, he'll get noticed by people way better than him, and he'll start picking up what they do.

If he doesn't get better, chances are this will be nothing more than a passing hobby and if he's having fun doing it what's the harm.

Jeez...at least quote the correct lyrics. :)

This is correct. No one gets to the end of your life and thinks to themselves, "I wish I hadn't chased my dream."

I was one of the early supporters of the let the kid fail, he isn't going to listen to you anyways because he's 18 and to him you simply don't get it. I even thought that first link you sent showed at least a little bit of potential. But the stuff he's putting out right now is pretty much unlistenable (yes I know that's now a word, but he no worse than any of his horrid lyrics). At some point he has to realize that this music is horrible and he has no chance. Anything you can do to expedite that process and you're doing him a favor.

They might get to 40 and think "crap, imagine how far I'd be in this career if I hadn't wasted half a decade on that stupidity". We're over a year into this at this point, and he shows no signs of letting up and/or improving. At very least it's time for him to more seriously consider a backup option. The fact that his grades might be worse than his music isn't giving that impression though.

If he's interested in designing hats, could you get him interested in graphic design or something like that? Tell him he could at least design his own album cover when the time comes. Any computer skills or interest whatsoever? Maybe suggest learning some things here could be a way for him to improve his skills on whatever software they're using for this.

Maybe finding ways to encourage his creativity while simultaneously moving a backup option forward is the way to go?...

He needs to up his hip hop schtick. Tell him to get a fade like MC Serchfor starters. Props if his parted eye brow matches the lines on his head. Cop some Cross Colors. Maybe an eye patch.

Ask him again at 70. Not that I support him doing hip-hop...definitely needs to get turned on to a brighter burning world of ideas.

I posted earlier to clue him into some better artists like Jurassic Five. If he's dead set gangster get him some Nas. The best way to help him get better is to get him listening to better hip-hop.

The problem is, even if he's AWESOME, like, THE BEST (which from what little I heard the first time this thread was around, he is not) he still has less than a .0001% shot at any real success. I'm speaking from experience here as a white rapper who has even won an award in a Southern California music award show. It's all fine and dandy to chase the dream, but raps and beats won't pay the bills... nor will hats. You get the kid involved in any freestyle battles yet? Eminem came up on the battle circuit... they're not as popular nowadays... but if you want to test the kids mettle, throw him on stage in a battle.

Yea... I thought that was funny."Here son... now listen to these guys and don't leave your room till you sound like a hiphop barbershop quartet"2na is a great emcee to model though.

By "real success" do you mean being able to support yourself on earnings from your music?

The kid has his entire life to wallow with the masses. He deserves a little dream.

First, I think you've handled this well. Told him the pitfalls, yet encouraged him to try his dream. He is 18 and technically a man, so he can do what he wants even if it's a bad idea. If you just flat out tell him the idea is horrible and he needs to stop, he'll do it anyway. At least this way, you are still involved. Good job.

Second, there is nothing special about that you tube video. It's like he opened up a "Rap for Dummies" book and on page 2 it tells you to put the word ##### in plenty of times, so he did. He's got a lot of work to do.

I'm not a great fan of rap, but any of the rappers I have liked, if you close your eyes, you can hear a bit of Charlie Parker in their "flow." I'm not meaning to insult the great man by comparing him to a person who talks to a beat, but it does take some skill to have that flow. It's almost like scat singing. Harder than it looks.

He needs to find a niche lyrically. He's not some kid from the streets, so it sounds forced and phony to sound like that. He's not going to make it rapping about things he's never actually done, so he might as well use real life experience. Everybody has something they can tell a story about. Relationships, following your dreams, etc.

We have encouraged him in other areas, one being going to school for music production. Another was telling him to maybe intern at a radio station as his girlfriends uncle works at one. Both are possibilities that he's been warm to at different times.

I've already discussed with him that many musicians were classically trained including James Hetfield of Metallica. I will mention what some of you brought up about the rappers going to school.

He's said he got out of school what he wanted to so he's done after this first year. What?! Ok fine. No more living at home come fall. Good luck paying all your bills plus student loan payments. He can't even stay current on his liability-only car insurance with me.

I think the true end game will be reality setting in the next few years as he struggles then goes back to school with a more mature outlook. We'll see.

If I were an idiot teenager I'd want someone who knows better to spare me the embarrassment.
I'd just want to be sure no one who was giving me advice had settled into a life so disappointing he spent most of his waking energy whoring for attention on internet message boards.
