I kinda think some of you don't know what a "great" movie means. Are some of these decent and/or good viewing flicks? Sure. Great like The Godfather, The Shining, Seven Samurai, Pulp Fiction? No. not even close.

Warrior and Silver Linings were probably my favorite.

Juno, Brokeback, Into the Wild and Charlie Wilson's War were all really good. Don't care what anybody says, the Hunger Games movies are too.

Whether any are truly great, I have no idea.

Partially true, I suppose. Of course there's always Kant's Subjective-Universal idea that says we often mostly agree about certain masterpieces because it appeals to something indelibly human - our shared subjective condition.

Or how about Hume's notion of taste? Et cetera. Hi. I teach aesthetics. Something I desperately try to keep out of the forums like accountants avoid talking numbers and crap.

Point is, I understand the concept. Many of those films are not great.

In your opinion.

But in the anals of comedy I know a lot of people who view Finding Sara Marshall as a great comedy, or even 40 Year Old Virgin and I Love You Man.

For me great is a movie I can watch over and over and over. All those on the list I compiled fit that bill for me as great movies. I enjoy them each and every time I watch them and can watch them multiple times.

For example Shutter Island. That is a movie that has flown under the radar for a lot of people. I think it happens to be a fantastic tense thriller with ton's of atmosphere, lunacy and great acting by Leonardo. My wife and I think it is a great movie.

Everyone has their standards. Some higher or lower. I love Horror and sci-fi so than genre get's little to no respect for the most part among the general movie watching public. And greatness is rarely acknowledged in that particular genre. Same goes for comedy.

Warrior is a seriously underappreciated movie. I don't think it ranks in the "best of the best," but because it went so under the radar, I like it's inclusion. Similarly, I really liked Redbelt.

Kant would be delighted were he alive today to see the emergence of the database! Our shared subjective condition no longer needs to remain the province of one mighty egghead's thought experiment. We've formally tabulated and published the results, and the shared subjective condition is on display for all to witness.

Turns out The Dark Knight dwarfs Kurosawa (see IMDB for details), awesomeness-wise, and Any Rand is the most influential writer to ever lay claim to the title "philosopher." (see Library of Congress) :thumbup:

It would be worth resuscitating him just to see him crawl back into his grave in despair.

 
Saving Private Ryan... doesn't fit your 10 year category. Hard to believe it's been 16 years since it was released. Maybe it's because I watch it every time it comes on T.V.

Now that people have mentioned it, Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker both deserve mention. I walked out of the theatre after Hurt Locker almost shaking, effusively praising it. Of course, it was a matinee, and it was in NY, which always gives me sensory stimulus, so that may have done it. But it was such an unexpected surprise. I walked in kinda wondering about my friend's choice, and walked out of there completely sold.

I'll have to see Children of Men.

And genre-wise, if you'll forgive me, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which was mentioned before, is probably the sanest, funniest, most non-delusional rom-com ever, IMO.

No need to apologize. It is a great comedy indeed. Some of us "get it".

Die...die...die...I can't.

So many classic scenes and a lot of laughs in a great romantic comedy. Love this movie.

Such a funny movie, tied at the top with The Hangover for my best comedies in the last 10 years.

 
Off topic, but while you argue there haven't been great movies, I'm not sure we have seen a better decade for Television.

I was talking to my wife the other night about how awesome TV is now and how horrible movies are, and that the combination is turning me into a recluse.

Yep. There's definitely a correlation. Hollywood got stale & money-obsessed with the advent of $200 million budget films. With so much $$ at stake the financial people demanded more creative power, which led to crappier, formulaic films.

Independent cinema tried to fill the void, and you even saw a flock of top flight actors doing indie films for peanuts (compared to what they were paid by big studios), but it never really got HUGE.

Enter the cable networks and television. They filled the creative void, and ushered in a golden age of TV.

I do agree that we haven't seen an all-time great movie appear in quite a while. The kind of film that 95% of the public has in their top 10.

It's kind of like music these days. A lot of crap, a lot of good stuff too, but nothing universally great.
