*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (8 Viewers)

As much as I'd love to think the rockets have finally gotten their act together ( Dwight with two blocks on LA in the final minute!) it's probably too little too late. Glad they won last night though and finally looked good doing it.
Certainly not too little too late. It's going to be a crazy exciting Game 6. Unfortunately for the Rockets, I don't think the moment will be too big for young Lillard.

I'm disappointed that we didn't get a TOR-WAS series. Most of America wouldn't have known it, but it would've been the battle for "Best Backcourt in the East". Either way, it would've been awesome to see those 4 go toe to toe (to toe to toe).

Cliff et al - what are the basketball reasons they are so much better than expected ? Last night is only the 4th or. 5th time I've seen them all year and that is a good team. They were expected to possibly be in the running for a top pick. Kind of wish we were getting a Lowry/dd/jv vs wall/ beal/ nene match next round.

I don't know. Their best player looked pretty lackluster for most of the game. Key block was a pleasant surprise, though.

From what I've seen the teams are mirror images. They both defend well (tied for 9th in the league at 102.4 D efficiency) and shoot the three well (Wiz T4th and Raptors T7th in 3 Pt %). They play traditional big guys at the 4 and 5- Amir Johnson and Nene are both guys who don't put up big numbers in the traditional stats but the teams' +/- is always much better when they're on the court. They both took advantage of playing in a weak conference. Toronto has a slightly better offense because they don't have the free throw shooting woes that the Wiz have, but that's about all that separates them.

NY Post reports a source close to Sterling says he will NOT sell the team, and will sue the NBA, and he doesnt care if the court case takes years.
The problem for Sterling is that the no-recourse language in the Constitution probably means the case wouldn't take years (IMO). I doubt the NBA would even have to answer the complaint. They'd file a motion to dismiss with prejudice (and presumably an opposition to Sterling's motion for a preliminary injunction) and I think they'd probably win. Once that happens, Sterling can appeal all he wants, but he can't really stop the sale. He can just claim damages afterwards if he wins.

That's awesome. I head the Brooklyn chant during the game and of course loved it but was watching NBA TV so didn't know the Nets twitter account called out their fans and praised Raptors fans. They have been great all series but that was expected.

He almost gets the whistle every time he goes flying so understand why he does that, but as a fan its disgusting to watch. game was tied after the late JJ 3 and Mirza was pressing up on Lowry in the backcourt and Lowry bumped into him and went flying when there was no foul, ref blew the whistle, then next possession down he flopped again on an Anderson drive that should have been a blocking foul. Completely changed the game.

:lmao:

Yeah, the guys who leads the league in charges taken is a flopper.

A big "pressing up" on a PG in the back court is going to get called for a foul 90% of the time. Anderson lowered his shoulder and went straight into Lowry (man he was a trainwreck down the stretch). There were plays you could ##### about if you really wanted to, but those weren't them.

This is pretty rich coming from a Brooklyn "fan"
It was an emotional game so I didn't want to rub salt and thought maybe I was being a homer but felt the same way. The foul on Teletovic he was riding him the whole way, just because Lowry created the contact doesn't mean Teletovic wasn't sliding and riding him and it wasn't a blocking foul. And with Anderson he did lower his shoulder but not only that if you try to say Lowry flopped on that then how can there be enough contact to warrant a blocking foul...

Anyways its been a heck of a series much like most of these playoff series. Should be a good finish. Did love seeing sad faced Pierce and KG on the bench at the end. Pierce must have loved being benched for Alan Anderson in the clutch, couldn't have happened to two nicer guys.
Probably had multiple heart attacks during the game. Nice to pull the win out, but these stretches of complete and utter incompetence that this team goes through at least once a game can be maddening.

Big thumbs up to seeing sad faced Pierce and KG....I can't think of any basketball players I hate more than those two. Terrence Ross needs to stay on the bench until he gets fixed.
Yup a fake tough guy and a fake thug, two of my most hated nba'ers as well. They deserve each their nice first round exit, throw Kidd in there too. I never had any dislike for his when he was a player but with the tanking for 6 and, at least to me, he just doesn't come off as a head coach comes off as arrogant and cocky to me, and he just annoys me to look at now lol. I felt like every time they showed a shot of him last night he just had this same stupid look on his face.

-Getting rid of Bargnani and Gay was massive. They are cancers on the floor in their own spectacular ways.

-They went from a bench of Fields, Novak, Buycks, Stone, Acy (all guys who will not be on rosters in a year or two) to Vasquez, Patterson, Salmons and Hayes.

-Derozan greatly improved his game this year. 50% increase in his assist categories. One of the best in the league at getting to the line (amazing how many times guys foul him when he takes long 2s).

-Lowry was the best PG in the league not named Paul or Curry

-they have a quality big rotation. JV keeps getting better. Amir  does so many great things out there that are hard to quantify. Then they can bring in Patterson (stretch 4), Hans Bro (energy) or Hayes (great defender) depending on the situation.

-the entire roster can make FTs and 9 guys on the roster shoot the 3 at over 30%.

-they have a well built roster of above average players. Just based on that they should be an average team. Toss in a top 5 PG & SG and they're more talented and deeper than a lot of teams.

The biggest thing though is the ball movement and lack of ego. Derozan tries to be a hero occasionally but for the most part he keeps it in line.

We got much better on D via subtraction (Bargnani and Calderon) and more efficient on offense via subtraction (Gay and Bargnani).

Add in improved mid-range consistency from Derozen, a healthy Lowry (was hurt a lot last year), some progression from Valanciunas, a much deeper bench (Vasquez has been huge and we haven't had a backup PG of his quality in a LONG time), and weaker opponents, you have a the recipe for significant improvement.

It's been fun to watch Vasquez. He's completely out of his depth as a starter but has to be one of the top backups in the league. Glad to see he found a good landing spot. I wonder if someone is going to try and overpay him this offseason.

Ya beat me to it. I think it cannot be over emphasized how important getting rid of Bargnani was. I still remember last year Tobias telling me Bargnani was "not that bad". Yes he was, and still is.

The other key ingredient was Vasquez. Last year our backup PG's were John Lucas and Sebastian Telfair, and they played a lot due to Lowry's various injuries. Backup PG went from a big minus to a significant plus with the addition of Vasquez.

I tried defending Bargnani for a long time.

"He's a good shooter, he just takes bad shots"

"He's a good man defender, just needs to work on his help D"

"His rebounding will improve as he gets older"

Then he'd show a flash for a few games. At the start of 11/12 (?) he was on fire for the first month or so then got hurt leaving us all thinking what if?

I forgot that was the first they flipped for Harden.

Man what an ###-pounding that trade was for Houston. I can't get over it.

Why did Houston dump Lowry again? I forget.
To get a lottery pick from a lottery bound team.

Lowry and McHale didn't get along. I think the Houston people actually knew that he was a very very good player. The trade worked out well enough since they netted Harden. But not a day goes by that a new thread isn't started on the Rockets board once again discussing how not one but two all star caliber PGs were recently in Houston yet both are playing elsewhere.

I don't think Houston even realized Harden would be that good. I sure didn't. I remember I was at the Ft Worth rodeo peeing at a urinal when I saw the trade had happened. My response was, "ok...OK....maybe he can develop in to a really good second-best-player-on-a-contender..."

Help me out Cliffy. Why chant Brooklyn?
Its mocking them/their fans. That's what Nets fans chant at home but really it sounds like they're taunting Brooklyn anyways.

The Lowry trade is completely defensible from Houston's perspective at the time. Hell, it was bad trade for the Raptors. They were giving up what was likely to be a high lottery pick for an average PG with 'personality issues'.

Letting Dragic go to Phoenix so they could sign Lin? Not so much.

Ah, that's right, it was Dragic that was traded to clear up room for Lin. HOU has been shuffling off so many AS caliber PGs that it's easy to get confused.

A little more for you...

Eighty-four. That's how many offensive fouls Lowry drew this season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. To put into perspective how good Lowry was, the league leader over the previous five seasons drew an average of 56.2 offensive fouls.
Nets never flop...

Well tonight is do or (likely) die for the Pacers.

I'm hopeful but have very low expectations.

The flight home could be very interesting.

I think it's totally ridiculous that people are hyping the Heat's chances to make the Finals and ignoring the top-seeded Pacers just because the Heat swept their first round series against the 43-39 Bobcats while the Pacers trail 3-2 to the 38-44 Hawks.

dragic walked because Alexander wouldn't approve a fourth year on the deal. No trade.
And how did they use their newfound cap space from letting Dragic walk? (I'm genuinely asking. I don't remember as the whirlwind was turning your lovable Rockets bunch of players you kept wanting to trade into this dynamo)

No. The article is pretty fair, it's just a terrible headline. The Oklahoman is getting killed on twitter.

It has not been a good series for Durant. Obviously the Grizzlies D and the Thunder's plan offense isn't helping but these last few games have not been his best work. It happens. Hopefully he plays well tonight, but I don't see them pulling out of this funk. Bring on Stan Van Gundy or George Karl.

Yeah it's been quite a ####storm on Twitter. Obviously we've been watching from DC as interested parties with an eye on 2016, but it doesn't look like the fans are anywhere near as negative as the newspaper.

I don't recall exactly. I think Asik signed first then dragic to Phoenix then Lin. But dragic wasn't on the books for much so it wasn't like he created a lot of cap room.

He's a DC native and his ties to the area are as close as any athlete to any place. He comes back every summer, has a curly W tattoo (Nats logo), recruited DeSean Jackson to the Skins, refers to DC as "home" and uses "we" when he talks about the Skins and the city. And it makes sense from a roster/cap standpoint.

OTOH he's said he'd be hesitant to play in Washington because of the distractions, presumably people he grew up with trying to mooch off him and whatnot. When he was here for the one road game this season he complained about the headache of having to get tickets for everyone and I think mentioned how it'd be even worse if he was here full time. And obviously there's a lot of wishful thinking in play from my perspective.

Speaking of wishful thinking, any way we can sync this up with changing the name back to Bullets? I think my head would explode with joy.
I assume they'd change the name to the Washington Durants if that's what he wanted.

It's a long way off, though- the Thunder are still very much alive this season and there's two more after that before he hits free agency. And you can be sure all the usual suspects will be involved in the beauty contest if he doesn't reup with OKC.
