*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (4 Viewers)

NBA will announce tomorrow that box scores with video links will be available to all fans on http://NBA.com .
https://twitter.com/ZachLowe_NBA/status/404808545809354752

For example: If LeBron is 10-of-16 from the floor, fans can click on that "16," and see a video reel of all 16 LeBron shots.

This sounds awesome.

Just tried this - they play a 30 second ad before each shot when you click on a player? Any way for me to block these ads? Otherwise it makes it pretty much useless.

Adblock Plus will get rid of them.

BTW Dr J, just saw the documentary on what I assume is a hero of yours, amazing story and I never knew the whole story. I rooted for him and was happy when he won in 1983 with the 76ers but I didn't know the history of the ABA all that much, just thought it was like the USFL. I always respected him but I got an even deeper appreciation for what he did in the game of basketball. It's on Youtube for free in HD if anyone has not seen it yet. Well worth an hour+ of your time.
Thanks, will check it out. Nah, not a hero but I do appreciate his skills.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGjaBmFZhl8

Anyone that has not seen "The Doctor" should watch this. The pictures of Julius Erving playing in harlem with kids sitting on the school roof and bridges around the court, you will never see that kind of stuff again. Different time but those shots look like they would make one helluva good Hollywood movie set in the early 70s.

NCAA at the time prohibited dunking…think about that. The story about Rucker Court was just astonishing and the history lesson of the ABA.

Kobe's 2 year extension: $23.5M and $25M. Franchise crippled till 2016.
They got a guy who's worth what, $75M per year to the franchise to take a 20% pay cut from 31M to 24M.

I thought it would be more.
He'll only be making slightly more than Duncan and Tony Parker combined. bargain
Parker and Duncan's stupidity shouldn't effect Kobe's decision.

And lets be honest, Kobe has far more leverage than either of those two have with the Spurs.

Sure, the franchise will bank with him in their uniform. Good for the lakers. But Kobe isn't winning another ring. Not to say he would have had he taken a 12 mil deal but this slams the door shut for sure.

Same thing virtually everyone on this board said in '04 when Shaq was dealt.

I guess I should have said the basketball side of the franchise is crippled till 2016. The Buss' are still going to rake in the cash. Congrats to Laker fans?
Well there's that, and the fact that when the Buss' make big dough, they are also more willing to pay the luxury tax. And I'm guessing there were discussions with Kobe and assurances made that they are going to spend big dough to reload in the off season.

Are you honestly happy about this extension? Honestly.

FWIW, Coon seems to believe this opens them up to sign a max level player this year assuming they renounce all the other FAs. Not saying this is a good contract, but 2 years isn't the end of the world.

If it wasn't for the pesky salary cap you would have a point.

They'd have to gut their team to get a max guy in. And even then, is Carmelo + Kobe and a bunch of scrubs getting anywhere in the West? I can't see it.

I'd like to believe this means they've realized there won't be anyone on the market worth paying a max contract to this offseason and they're targeting the 2015 FA class, when Nash will be off the books for certain. I'd like to believe that...

This is exactly it, you hit the nail on the head.

They knew Lebron is a pipe dream, and they know Melo is a terrible fit. This years FA class was way overrated.

Mitch knows what he's doing.

Well I highly doubt they sign Melo anyway (I think this is more towards 2015-6 FA class), but before this they would have had a cap hold on Kobe's contract and wouldn't have been able to do anything without renouncing him (which they weren't going to do).

The entire situation is like Dirk/Dallas. I'm sure if they can't sign anyone this year, they'll roll into 2015-6 with ample cap space.

What is the advantage of signing Kobe now? Wait and see what level he is at after he returns. In February if he seems like he can play give him the same deal. Just seems like bad timimg for the Lakers.

Yeah they could pull of another max player and a bunch of scrubs. That is still a low-end playoff team (unless that max player is LeBron). And who is going to want to play with Kobe?

Love would be an interesting fit for an aging, record-chasing Kobe when he frees up. LA/UCLA guy.
He is a good fit. However, Love has said that if MIN is winning, and on the correct path, he would re-up with them. Most likely talking out of his ###, but he will still get the most money from MIN and not LAL. As we have seen with Howard, taking the most money is no sure thing, but I would think more times than not, more oney wins out.

Terrible market this summer. Asides from Heat players and Dirk, you probably couldn't build a playoff team with this year's UFA. And they're only going to be able to spend so much. They can't just fly over the luxury tax because they want to.

PG: Lowry / Bayless / Harris

SG: Carter / Allen / Sefolosha

SF: Deng / Pierce / Granger

PF: Pau / Hump

C: Gortat / Hawes / Kaman

Well sure, as with any FA its based on whether they'll actually leave and take a reduced salary, although the visibility of the Lakers probably makes up for that with other revenue possibilities.

Love is the rare max guy whose skill set (and temperament, at least from what we know) seem like a good match for an aging Kobe. And he's young enough that he could be the centerpiece after Kobe leaves. Plus he's got an even stronger draw to LA than a normal NBA guy who simply wants to wear the uniform and nail more B list celebrities.

he would be more interesting to the LAL when Kobe leaves. Why put yourself through the drama and histronics of a menopausal Kobe when you could wait?

I don't get the "The FA market is looking a little thin, so let's pay these guy at least double what he's worth and destroy our cap."

The FA market doesn't begin and end with Lebron Sweepstakeses.

Because you're from Santa Monica, and you don't need to have the ball in your hand every possession to play your game, and you're young enough to be there for many years after he leaves?

I'm not predicting he goes there. I'm saying I think he's a better fit in 2015 or 2016 than anyone other than the two obvious guys who turn any team they're on into a contender.

No. Melo is the best fit. It needs to happen. Please, please, please let it happen.

Kind of hard to get to luxury tax territory when you are under the cap and have no assets to get Bird rights to players via trade.

Oh come on. Wouldn't watching Kobe and Melo go shot for shot all season be more entertaining than watching Kobe and a bunch of mediocre guys battle for an 8 seed while Kobe chucks his way into the record books? The entertainment value would be off the charts. Think of the duels they'd have with one another. The fights over who'd get to take the last shot. The glares they'd give a teammate who attempts a shot. The look of pure hopelessness on D'Antoni's face. I wouldn't miss a game.

Is miss Kobe Bryant still getting half of that?
This is actually a really good question.
They reconciled, IIRC. So I believe she would be entitled to half that, in the event of a divorce, unless Kobe somehow got her to sign something.

Speaking of money, Kobe's estimated worth is $200mm. Obviously more than he's ever going to be able to spend, especially if you factor in post-basketball earnings. So we can reasonably assume that Kobe's life priorities going forward are:

1) :moneybag:

2) The scoring record

3) Winning a title

Thought he was from Oregon.
Was born in Santa Monica but only lived there for a year. Then played one year for UCLA. His southern CA connections are a bit overblown
