*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (6 Viewers)

I have never heard of that before. apparently it counts as a technical every time he commits a personal.
My team had that happen in HS once, but they made us play with 4.
Every other level you have to play with whatever you got left. Forfeit if you get down to 1.
I saw it in an ACC game once. Rick Barnes took off his jacket and went to the scorer's table to check in when Clemson was down to 4 guys. Good stuff. Once I saw that I always just assumed that was the universal rule.
didn't realize Barnes was such a #####
I think that was a UNC-leaning columnist piece. Dean Smith hated Barnes, which means everyone affiliated with UNC hated Barnes. I was at the game and I thought it was hilarious that Barnes went to check in, so I kind of liked the guy after that
I don;t mind the check in schtick, kind of funny. The rough play and interacting with opposing players is bush league.

Stein rumor from last night was P. George, Lillard, T. Ross and Wall in the dunk contest. Wall confirmed today, and Lillard is being widely reported.

Dunk contest actually making a comeback?

I read somewhere that Lillard will be in the dunk contest, 3-point contest, skills contest, rising stars game and AS game.

Harrison Barnes and McLemore rounding out the dunk contest field. McLemore has had a bunch of stunning dunk *attempts* this year but it seems like he throws a large percentage of them off the back iron. Not optimistic about his chances.

No one really has a chance to dethrone Ross unless they get the Griffin treatment.

They signed Mike Brown to a 5 year contract. 5 years. For Mike Brown.
So good. What were they thinking.
Fun fact: Chris Grant (cavs gm) and mike brown were teammates in college.
Oh the connections are there.....still makes it a horrendous decision for all.

And by the way, Gilbert WILL pay MB for 4 years if that's determined the way to go, which it should be. People make waaay too big a deal about paying coaches, especially with owners like Gilbert and Haslem (Browns).

Magic somehow beat the Thunder.

They're not totally awful when Harris and Vucevic are out there. They need to rectify that.

The Pacers are so deep. Paul George with a horrific night and they're still about to beat the Blazers in OT.
That and Lance Stephenson was out. Lillard is a special player! Wow!

Marcus Smart should have really really really really REALLY have went pro. He cost himself some money with that decision and now he pushes an old fat fan tonight. Super dumb.

Sounds like Cheeks fired by the Pistons. Can't say I'm surprised. Uninspiring hire from the beginning. The roster is perhaps flawed, but Cheeks never really seemed to have a clue.

:lmao: Perhaps? You couldn't have ####ed up in building a roster more in surrounding a franchise player in Drummond. Let's get him a career 39% shooting PG that throws up 16 shots/game and a undisciplined 'SF' that can't shoot outside 3 feet! Brilliant.

Firing is nothing more than passing blame and avoiding the real problem. As good as the Pistons 80's/90's backcourt was on the court, they're equally as bad (if not worse) GMs

Joe D did win a championship as a GM, however he hasn't done squat since draft in tayhsaun prince. Time for Joe D to go.

They need to Trade Monroe, move JSmith to the 3. Drfting Trey Burke was a no brainer and he screwed that up too.

Just tank and get a lot of ping pong balls, please

thanks

Well, Joe built the 2000s Pistons who went to five straight ECFs and won a championship during the Spurs/Lakers block. That included that huge finals upset of the Lakers in 2004, doing it without a superstar player, something no one else seems to be able to do. He certainly has made some big mistakes (Darko, Ben G, Villanueva), but he's also found a lot of great players along the way including Drummond and Monroe. Josh Smith looks like a mess and he doesn't seem to fit, but it's still early.

I don't really understand firing Cheecks based on their current record, but maybe it's something deeper. Cheeks looked frustrated and lost at times but I would have at least let him finish his first year. I mean what were the expectations? 7th or 8th seed in the East at best? They are 9th right now and have won four straight home games. Seems like something else was there, maybe we'll find out more.

Him and Will Bynum had a major blow out on the court the other day

Who knows. Drummond was a no brainer that year, but he also has screwed up many drafts, like KCP instead of Burke

Drummond and Monroe down?

I agree they should have taken Burke though, not sure what he was thinking with this Georgia kid who looks completely lost.

Cheeks is a classic "player's coach". His style of coaching works when he has a group of mature veterans that don't require a lot of discipline.

That's pretty much the exact opposite of the Pistons roster.

They're running out of scapegoats fast. He's gotta be next in line, which might be partly why he made this move now. Fire Cheeks, hope things turn around enough in the second half of the season to convince Gores to keep him in place. Seriously, they've gotta be paying, what, 3 head coaches right now.

Regarding the roster, I said "perhaps" earlier only because I don't think it's near a finished product. I don't know if there will be any big deadline moves or if it will be in the offseason, but my point there was only that this isn't the roster with which they'll be trying to make a title run. What Dumars did was collect some athleticism that the roster has been sorely lacking for a while. He took a shot that Cheeks could figure out a way to mold them into a middling-type playoff team this year. Going into the season it was widely speculated that Dumars needed at least that to keep his job. I'm guessing he hoped a talent infusion would get that done and set him up for other moves going forward. Instead, Cheeks has been questioned by the police for some kind of domestic incident right after being hired, has had sort of strange run-ins with a good portion of the roster, and has looked to be, frankly, in over his head.

With those stakes, I thought it was odd he would hitch his wagon to a journeyman coach like Cheeks.

Gores and Phil Jackson are pretty tight. Maybe Gores sweeps everybody out and gives control to Jackson. :tinfoilhat:

Lawrence Frank's contract extends to the end of this season.

Cheeks' contract runs through next season.

John Kuester's contract only went through 2012.

So for the next 4 months the Pistons will be paying for 3 head coaches.

Drummond was a a gift, however Monroe is just a dude IMO

Phil has always said how much he hates Detroit, and the stage just isn't big enough for him IMO. He would have a talented big and some athletic moving parts though, so maybe he'd be interested with control. Seems like Dumars' days are numbered though, maybe he realizes he has to make the playoffs this year or he's out and decided to can Cheeks and find someone who can at least get them a few home playoff games.

Sheed would be awesome, lol.

So this makes 4 coaches in 6 years for the Pistons? Sure seems like a last ditch effort by Dumars to save his job.

And now...your World Champion....Orlando Magic!!
Back to back wins over the Thunder and Pacers. Pretty funny.

Vucevic makes them a far far better team. He's missed a lot of games and they lost almost all of them.

Uhhhh maybe he could miss a few more?

The NBA should add a 4th ref. Too many missed calls or bad look angles on plays. Is there any logical reason they don't add another?
