Is it common for NBA GM's to admit they had their eyes on a guy and were disappointed they didn't get him? I grew up with hockey, where every player that every team selects "was at the top of the board" and "the guy they targeted from the start", so it's a bit jarring for me to see Masai Ujiri admitting the Raptors were basically heartbroken not to get Tyler Ennis.
Not really but I don't think it means anything. Ujiri has been pretty open with his opinions. Had he taken a player who'd have been coming to the team immediately, I doubt he says it.
After shaking off my initial disappointment w/r to missing on Ennis and Harris, and only bringing in Bruno instead of two guys (20 and 22), I'm feeling ok with this pick now. I think Ujiri is focused on getting assets, which our team is sorely lacking right now, instead of just filling out spots. From what I've seen of most of the players picked after 20, some have potential to be decent players but most are likely to be JAG's. With his physical make up, Bruno has a chance to be more valuable than most of those guys, while of course having a much much higher likelihood that he is a worthless bust. So I'm kind of glad Ujiri is not taking the treadmill approach. I'm not interested in building a team that's going to possibly win a round in the playoffs. I want a team that has a chance to compete. Our only real assets right now are Derozan and Valanciunas. They aren't bad players, but hardly a core upon which you can build a contender. Lowry if he resigns would be a nice piece but we have no idea what he's going to do at this point and how much he will cost. We don't need pieces, we need difference makers.
