*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (6 Viewers)

It's interesting that Wiggins hasn't signed his rookie contract yet if he's absolutely staying put like Blatt has said. My understanding is the team would have to wait 30 days after he signs before they can trade him.

The delusional posts by cav fans thinking their: 1 going to trade for Love without giving up Wiggins, not going to happen, 2. to think they can win a championship without the leadership and talent of Love. The T wolves will trade Love, and no the Cavs will not get him next year in free agency, as any trade will include an extension for Love. The cavs could be a very special team with Love, without him just a good team
They won't win without the leadership of Love? The guy who's never been to the playoffs?

I don't know which Cleveland fans think they can get Love as a FA next year. It isn't feasible from a cap standpoint.
just the ones that don't understand how the cap works.
But they'll be able to resign Love in 2015 if they trade for him? Is there some type of cap exception he would fall under?

You can go over the cap to resign your own players.

I know you can for guys that have been playing with you for a few years. didn't realize that was the case for a guy that was only on the team for a year. which exception is that?

Wade couldn't even play 60 games in the regular season last year. Whats going to happen now that the Heat actually need him to contribute? On top of that Deng looks washed up. I would be surprised/shocked if this team finishes with a better record than the Knicks. Any action from Todem or Heat fans?
I have a feeling we'll see a bounce back year from Wade.

It's one thing coming off 3 straight years of walking through the East and going to the Finals as 2nd/3rd wheel. It's a completely different matter to be completely written off, shunned by your buddy, and needing to carry the load again while battling for a Playoff spot.

We also don't know that he couldn't play 60 games. We just know that's they all agreed was best for the team.

Maybe his body can't do it or maybe he's happy to mail it cashing checks in SB. But this is one of the 4 or 5 best SG's in NBA history, he's not that old, and I assume he has an ounce or two of pride.

He's overpaid, but writing him off is probably foolish.
I would agree with this if Wade had developed a jump shot and didn't rely solely on athleticism. Problem is his game involves him running full speed to the hoop hoping to draw contact and fall to the floor. That takes a toll on your body especially when you have been doing it as long as he has. Wade is done and he is now in the conversation for the WORST contract in the entire NBA
I mostly agree. He just didn't really look "done" until the very end, and I'm wondering if a different mindset going into the season could help him squeeze out another season at a high level.

Definitely a bad contract, but that's a different matter.

If I'm the Cavs I don't give up Wiggins for Love.

For the near term adding Love to Cleveland sans Wiggins doesn't make them much better than Miami last year, IMO. Kyrie and Love are offensive upgrades over Wade and Bosh, but defensively those guys aren't close to Wade and Bosh. Andy V/Thompson/Bennett are better than Miami bigs but not significantly. Dion Waiters and Rio are practically the same player impact wise. The youth of Cavs roster is what makes them appealing but again, I don't see a LBJ/Love/Kyrie faring too well against the West contenders....too little defense. So basketball wise I can see the hesitance.

The TWolves are lucky the Cavs jumped into the Love sweepstakes, but I think GSW and CLE are happy with their present rosters if they can't land Love on their terms (sans Klay/Wiggins).

Also long term keeping Wiggins is the path to a long term dynasty. The Heatles have showed us that as currently structured an NBA franchise can only sustain 3 or near 3 max level contracts for a short time. Right now the Cavs are locked into Kyrie and LBJ. Adding Love automatically puts the Cavs on the clock for the next 3-4 years and LBJ and the Cavs will find themselves in the same situation as the Heat struggling to fill the roster. Wiggins looks at worst to be a Khawi Leonard clone and to have that rookie contract while Irving and LBJ are earning max dollars is essential to filling out the roster. Then when Wiggins is set for a max extension and Irving is in his prime, LBJ will be 35ish and hopefully be willing to take a pay cut.

Gotcha. Can they make this cap any more complicate?. Did the guys that wrote this use to work on the US tax code?

I do not understand the logic behind the Cavs not giving up Wiggins right now for Love if that is available. The Cavs lucked into that #1 pick, it's like getting Love for free. I wouldn't want to risk Love choosing to go back to his home state of California by being selfish about a piece that was gifted to you in the 1st place.

Cliff what's your thought on this?
Not sure why how they got the pick matters but... If I'm running the Cavs, I give up Irving and Bennett to try and get a couple nice pieces. If Irving gets Love, then move Bennett for a center and Waiters for a quality 3&D guy.
Who's playing point again?
Rio :excited:

Didnt think that through long enough. Really dont need a 3d guy when keeping Wiggins. Maybe send Irving to the Sun for something like Dragic, Plumlee and Green. Then use Bennet for a big like Robin Lopez. Dragic, Wiggins, LeBron, Thompson and Lopez is a quality 5. Bring Waiters, AV, Plumlee and Green off the bench with Miller and Allen.

No idea is the Suns or Blazers go for that but it is a better lineup than standing pat or just adding Love IMO. Keeps the Cavs young and cap flexibility going forward.

Lebron just went to the finals four times with Rio at point.

Kyrie isn't going anywhere for any reason. He just turned 22 and is an absolute beast offensively. He may never be a good defender, but I would be surprised if he didn't become a passable defender in the next couple years.

And once with a combination of Larry Hughes/Eric Snow/Boobie Gibson playing point.

To all the haters that said Melo was in it all for the money, he took less than the max to help his boy Phil Jackson out. He ONLY took 124 million dollars rather than the 129 he could have taken.

So if the salary cap is going to jump big with a new TV deal, how big does it need to jump for Melo's 3rd and 4th years to look reasonable? If the cap hits 80 like I've heard theorized then his 3rd and 4th years don't eat up nearly as much.

I'm surprised he doesn't have an opt out after 2 like it seems players are aiming for being free agents for 16-17

Let's not get carried away. Do the Knicks even have enough players to field a squad?

Wiggins has All-NBA upside, and at the very worst looks like a plus defender with excellent transition skills from the jump. The NBA is getting faster, and Wiggins is an elite amongst the elite from an athletic standpoint.

I think some of you guys aren't aware of how highly thought of Wiggins is, and you're writing off Waiters and Bennett too early. Thats a LOT off talent for ~ $14m total. Pairing those guys with LeBron, perhaps the best teammate in professional sports, could work wonders with those dudes.

If I'm Clev, I sit back and see what happens for a few months, then make changes if necessary.

You're insane. Trading a PG with the best handles in the NBA, who at age 22 has already won the All Star MVP is beyond silly.

For the record as a Wolves guy I wouldn't include Wiggins for Love if I was Cleveland. I also wouldn't trade Love without getting Wiggins. If I'm in charge of either team I'm in wait and see what happens mode, and I suspect that's what will happen here. I do think the Warriors are silly for not including Thompson, although I don't know all the particulars behind the scenes. Maybe Flip is holding out for too much to go along with Thompson. That's what I'm guessing on the GSW front.

NBADraft.net has Caris LeVert as the #7 pick in next year's mock. Can anyone explain this? I've never seen LeVert as a first round pick at all, let alone a high lottery guy.

K. Love is 25. He has a whole career ahead of him. He can blow out his ACL and still demand a max contract next off-season. He has all the leverage. Minn has no leverage whatsoever.

If he's not willing to sign with GSW then their is no trade to be had. If he wants to go to Cleveland that's where he will go if he is patient.

Cleveland has future picks and a lot of young assets that can easily be moved to clear cap space.

That said Minn can probably get the same package right now as they could next offseason from Cleveland if they are willing to risk Love just walking. If Love is set on Cleveland I expect Minn to stay the course but when they are out of it come midseason to give in. It may even make sense to see how Waiters, Thompson and Bennett evolve this season.

K. Love in a great spot. He can be coming into his age 26 season teamed with Lebron if he is just patient.

Lost in the shuffle is the most puzzling FA move. Z-Bo signing an extension at 2/20. Making it 3/37.

Does Houston not offer him the max or at least top 3/37 by a wide-margin? As well as then keep Parsons?

Z-Bo is 32. This is his last shot to cash in. He left 10x's of millions on the table. He must really love Memphis.

He is and always has been wildly overrated and he doesn't fit their need for a stretch 4 at all. I thought the 2/20 extension was fair, if not something of a slight overpayment.

:whoosh: Do you know what you are talking about? All of the Wolves faithful that studiously watches every exciting Timberwolves game the past few years tells us that Trader Flip is the one holding all the cards here.

Bring Wiggins/Klay or get laughed at by Flips' GM acumen. :football:

NBADraft.net is no longer on the forefront of player scouting or NBA team decision-making inside information. It used to be very good, but now it's run by amateurs when there are pros in the category.

The best draft preview and scouting site by a mile is DraftExpress. Jonathan Givony is IMO the best in the business right now.

If you need a second opinion, Kris Habbas of NBADraftInsider is pretty good. The site isn't well-designed, but the player scouting reports are pretty good.

Chad Ford IMO leaves a bit to be desired on actual scouting of players, but he seems to be pretty good at discerning what the actual NBA teams would do in a given scenario.

I wish NBADraft.net was a good site. They have three KU players in their 2015 top 6 and a fourth late in the first round. That ain't gonna happen, though.

Fair enough with regards to Houston. But Z-Bo could have gotten much more then 3/37 going forward. A lot more.

From who? He's a very good rebounder, but he's an amazingly inefficient scorer and an atrocious defender. He's a good fit in Memphis because Gasol covers up a lot of his mistakes and they need his scoring desperately even with as inefficient as it is. He's worth more to Memphis than he would be anywhere else in the league and he's only going to get worse from here. I can't imagine trying to compete defensively with him as my starting 4 in a couple years.

Z-Bo is 17/10 and Memphis has been dangerous in the West largely due to him the past few years. Good fit in Memphis? Sounds like good fit with most teams in the league.

Hes been the 3rd best player on that team for 3 years. He's not a good fit elsewhere because somebody has to pick up a lot of his slack defensively and they don't need somebody jacking up 15 crappy shots a game.

Your nuts if you think he doesn't get much more then 3/37 on the open market. Top 10 rebounder and he can score. Actually #5 for offensive rebounds. He'd get close to 4/60. If I'm Dallas give me Chandler and Z-Bo down low with Dirk and Ellis on the perimeter.

Rick Bonnell reporting Hornets exploring Lance offer. Bonnell's been the one beating the "Hornets aren't interested" drum all off-season. Very conservative and generally doesn't report smoke unless there's fire.

http://blogs.charlotte.com/inside_the_nba/2014/07/hornets-now-considering-signing-lance-stephenson.html

Let's get it done boys. Stephenson for $10 mill. Boozer for $3 mill. Might be the deepest team in the East if that happens.
Finally
The Hornets and their fans are going to be a bit disappointed if they get Lance. Plenty of talent - but if you'd have watched him all season, you'd see someone who is takes off way too many plays. Improved on court focus could make Lance a steal. But after watching him for a few years, I just don't see him making those adjustments.

I think everybody understands this could really go sideways, but it sounds like they could get him at a relative value. Unless we're missing something, his best offer on the table is 5/44. I'm sure there's another offer somewhere (likely I'm sure), but the Hornets can't start the offer at more than about $12 mill.

If they get him on a 4/44 or 3/36 sort of deal, it's not a crazy disaster if it doesn't go well. He's young and athletic, so they should be able to return some value, even if he's not a stud.

This is a franchise with fans that see the Gordon Hayward thing as a big deal and big step for the franchise. A real player actually pretended he wanted to come to CHA, even if it was because they offered him a contract nobody would've refused and had no shot of not getting matched.

If the Lance money is a bad investment, it's unlikely that money was going to a star player at any point.

Scratch that, Lance's getting 3/27 with a team option on the 3rd..

I don't care how much anybody hates Lance, that's a fantastic contract for the team.

Either there's something funky going on here, like IND not still offering their original contract (didn't they make some moves after offering it?), but on the surface he just straight up picked CHA over IND and is making a bet on himself that he's got a huge payday coming in 3 years.

I love watching Z- Bo but I don't think he's getting a 4 year deal at his age. The market for Pau would have been a good comp.

3/27 with a team option in year 3 is a great contract for Charlotte. I imagine a few other teams would have gotten in on the bidding had they known that kind of deal was in the cards. Hornets getting more frisky by the moment.

Rick Bonnell reporting Hornets exploring Lance offer. Bonnell's been the one beating the "Hornets aren't interested" drum all off-season. Very conservative and generally doesn't report smoke unless there's fire.

Let's get it done boys. Stephenson for $10 mill. Boozer for $3 mill. Might be the deepest team in the East if that happens.
I'd love to see the Hornets get Lance.

That would make the East even more interesting.
