*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (8 Viewers)

I've heard the Pistons occasionally called the Stones.

I'm tempted to start using it in this thread, but that would mean I'd have to talk about the Pistons more.

Mavs game was amazing. Monta Ellis was amazing.

Best thing ever that the Warriors sent him to the dumpster fire of a basketball team that was Milwaukee so that he could opt out, then take less money to play for a real team with a real coach in Dallas.

As an aside: I can't seem to figure out when it is ok to get a defender in the air and then jump into him and when it isn't. Seems totally arbitrary when there are calls and when there are not.
It's ridiculous. There's such a simple fix, too- verticality. If you pump-fake and the defender leaves his feet, you are only permitted to jump straight up to shoot and absorb the contact. Otherwise it's a no-call.
That's crazy. The defender isn't entitled to any position he wants.

Warriors have been called Dubs for a long time now, guess it's still new to people outside the bay area and only relevant cause Golden State is doing so well.

Curious for the folks who find it annoying, what would be a better way to reference the team? Or would you prefer to call them the "Warriors" every time you refer to them?
You could call them by their actual name like every other team does.
Yup exactly like every other team...including the ones below

Raps

Celts

Knicks

Sixers

Cavs

Wiz

Blazers

T-wovles (Wolves)

Clips

Griz

Mavs
I'll give you Cavs and Mavs. I would submit the remainder are not used by their fans EVERY time they referred to their team like you guys do with dubs.
How would Knicks not be included with Cavs and Mavs? Knickerbockers is that common?Or is it Cav's and Mav's?

The homos responsible for "Dubs" seem to have channeled their inner Dbag to find the lamest possible approximation of the name that isn't, by the way, a simple shortening of the actual name. It reeks of Drakkar and trying too hard.
To hear both sides, the Warriors official Twitter feed, Curry, Barbosa, and Speights all used "Dubs" in tweets last night.
Players, print media, and local sports host ALL use Dubs so it's accepted amongst all those who take interest in the Warriors.

To be honest, I have purposely been over using "Dubs" because it annoys a bunch of you.

DUBS ALL DAY!

Dubs would at least make sense for the Wizards, since it's actually in their logo. It doesn't distinguish the Warriors meaningfully, since they're not the only W team, nor even the team most closely associated with the letter W. "Golden State" is tragic enough already as a location. The logo's a bridge. Franchise is one giant identity crisis.

Just be the Warriors and be happy with it.

Didn't feel like I needed to address the absurd inclusion of the Knicks on that list.

Yeahhh.... NO.

1) Having lived in memphis and boston I can attest that the celtics are referred to as celts on occasion, but more often than not it's celtics. Here in Memphis, Grizzlies are called Grizz very sparingly.... Some of you kids in here act like you're paid a nickel every time you use the word Dubs.

2) In both cases (and most of the above) it's simply using a shortened version of one syllable of the name. The homos responsible for "Dubs" seem to have channeled their inner Dbag to find the lamest possible approximation of the name that isn't, by the way, a simple shortening of the actual name. It reeks of Drakkar and trying too hard.
"homos"? Really?

This. Most of the guys I talk hoops with refer to GState as the "Dubs".

Fair enough, TC

And I think I learned Stones from the old nba thread that I don't think exists anymore. This one is basically post The Decision and the Stones have been irrelevant.

I always call them the Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers.

10, 9, 8, 76ers!

So does anybody know who Rasul Butler is? Watched him live the other night against the Heat and he looked great. He's obviously a journeyman and old (35) but why has he bounced around he league so much?

Did he have potential and squandered it until now or is he just another bum?

He's been a 3 point specialist most of his career who couldn't shoot especially well and didn't offer anything else. I would chalk up his hot start to small sample sizes.

Hard to disagree with that...who wants to be on icon's side?

very good college player at LaSalle.

It's the Bay Bridge, you big dummy.

The Wolves are hideous.
they've been like this since rubio got hurt
And no Pek and no Kevin Martin. Playing a bunch of kids and Willie McGee Brewer
can we just give both teams losses?
I turned down a free ticket to this btw. Instead I watched grown ups 2 and drank bourbon
Sounds terrible tbh.
Was better than expected, but I agree I expected awfulness

Hawks with a decent road win against the Heat. I've learned not to get my hopes up so my enthusiasm is tempered but I think they can challenge the Wizards for the division.

'09 draft thread.

Sad I've been busy all day and haven't had a chance to spend some time in one of my favorite annual threads, but let me say that as a Warriors fan, this proposed Amare trade has me seriously considering crashing a bus full of C-4 into the Coliseum. The Redick Curry pick is miserable, but this would be far, far worse.

And the Knicks loving Stephen Curry makes no sense. Nate Robinson is/will be a better player than Curry. I understand Flynn or Rubio as a pure PG, but the short guard who can score first and dish second is already filled on the team.

Curry = Jodie Meeks....only 34 spots higher. He will get physically abused in the NBA.
