NBA Top Shot Thread - kind of like sports card + crypto, seems money to be made.... (2 Viewers)

I just don't get the marketplace yet, but I am a newbie. My Luka, as I mentioned before, is fairly low serial numbered. Looking at the listings for the moments with serial numbers just a little lower than mine, they are listed consistently around $1,100 (some higher) , but yet I see ones with higher numbers going for more. So I am unsure what to list mine at. I am not that attached to it, so I figured I may just list it at $900.00 and see what happens.

Going for more or listed for more?

People can list them for whatever they want I don't think that part is important in the middle.  For instance I have my serial #6942 Anthony Davis listed for $69,420 :P

Think they should have a want to purchase for feature. They have everyone’s selling prices but no want to buy for prices. Make it an open market, be a lot more fun.

Sold a completely useless Larry Nance low # card for $20. If I can sell that for the equivalent of 2 base set packs, this stuff is easy money.

There is definitely an element of timing the market.

I sole a Joe Ingles card for $18 today.

It was sitting at like $6 for a while and then it jacked up because accounts needed to get up to the 3 moment limit.

Why in the world is a lower number serial number worth more than the exact same moment with a higher serial number? Are they even issued in order?

Think there’s going to be a big market for things like this in the future but this particular one isn’t it IMO.
I think this has an advantage because the NBA has a big global reach and also is fairly well run. If they are behind it and can keep the bots out, it has legs.

Has anyone withdrawn any money is the question.....
Someone on Twitter told me they had. (It was a reputable account with lots of followers).

I just sold my first 2 moments this evening. If I hit Withdraw funds, I get this message:

We thank you for your patience while we enable withdrawals for your account. You will receive access after passing a review on our end. No further action is necessary from you.

This process may take up to 30 days due to heavy demand. We appreciate your patience - these protections are in place to ensure a safe and compliant trading experience for everyone. We are processing reviews as quickly as possible and our process will continue to get faster.

# of people with access to withdrawals: 17175 (4,378 recently added)

Anyone get a good enough spot in line for the pack today? No prayer for me today lol.
nope... 200K for me :sadbanana:   I did sell all 3 moments I had listed, though, so I am +200 total investment. Withdrawing my initial investment as soon as they get me approved, and free-rolling the rest. Only way I will put more into it right now, is if I get a spot in line for one of these special drops like today.

If it's talked about enough, it becomes reality.  With social media, that's easy.  Top Shot has done multiple things to fabricate moment value and this is one of them IMO.

They are not issued in order.

Any opinions on whether or not these packs (Rising Stars, in this case) should be opened or not?
I've gotten a $9 pack and sold an Oladipo instantly from it for $60.  Also in that pack is a Sean McDermott LE which I've watched and the lowest ask has risen to $170.  I may unload that one soon, more on that below.

I also got a $14 pack and have kept it sealed.  From everything I've read, sealed packs will be able to be sold in the Marketplace in the near future.  If you go onto Ebay, you can get a good idea of what sealed packs are going for (let's say, alot).  People are listing them on Ebay and providing a timestamped video opening it post sale to the buyer (since you can't gift packs, the pack has to be opened to transfer the moments to the buyer).  When it can be done through the MP, the pack should just transfer sealed.

Further, check out this site: https://evaluate.market/

When you look for a specific moment, you can see some very important numbers.  Total Owned, In Packs, Minted (not in packs), etc.  For the Sean McDermott, 4000 were minted, but 3217 remain not in packs (they haven't been distributed yet).  Only 415 are owned (one is mine) and 368 remain inside a sealed pack.  My thought is, once more of these are distributed, the value will decline, which is why I'm thinking I should just clock out at $170 or maybe try for a little more.

Just noticed that Top Shot is pointing people to evaluate.market in the Marketplace.  Didn't know they were doing that.  Found it on Twitter a few weeks ago.  I guess that's Top Shot putting up the white flag that they know their website blows....

140k in line today was actually about the closest I've been in line for one of these since like 12 drops ago.  I guess I'm due.

I was on a Webex meeting at 10:00--tried to get on at 10:01 and was like 230,000th in line. Bummer.....
Time entered doesn't matter.  The line order is randomly generated...supposedly.  my son was in like an hour early but I didn't get in until about 19 minutes early. He got 61000 I got 28000

Happy for those of you that got an All-Star pack this week. Maybe one of these days I can get one of the good ones...

It does if you get in late. You'll be placed behind everyone that got in the lobby in time. But yeah, no difference at all whether you're a minute early or an hour early.

My McD serial #1213 sold today for $160. I had it listed at $180 since Friday, I probably should have left it there longer, but $160 for someone who I haven’t a clue about is fine with me. Shortly afterwards, 3 bad serial numbers went for closer to $170.

Earlier today, serial # 2630 sold for $199. His jersey number is 30, so I guess there is additional value even with serials 130, 230, etc. I even wonder if my numbers added up to 30 if some crazy would spend more for it.

“Cool Cats” pack drop tomorrow at 12 pm PDT. Going to be my first attempt at one of these, fingers crossed.

I think this is a good example of market scarcity. All I hear from everybody is how difficult they are to acquire.

In 2-3 years will there be a market surplus? I get that you can always create a funnel and limit copies to create scarcity.

But one would think at one point after years of these are produced, that the ratio of available cards vs those interested would increase.

Cards Available / Market Size

At a certain point it gets saturated. I don't think we are even close to that point. Just spitballing product life cycle.

NBA is doing a great job "pretending" they can't get enough of these out to the public. They're at least doing the scarcity thing correctly.

Well, maybe.   Tried to add funds to my Dapper balance and the transaction failed twice. Maybe my bank is flagging this as fraud? Going to feel like a moron calling them about a $14 transaction to buy magic online basketball cards.

Yes some people have had issues with credit cards being declined since it shows up as a "crypto" purchase. I've used my chase card a couple times with no issues but I know other people have had problems with chase specifically.

It isn't that bad.

Hope you're better prepared than I was. Good luck.

  Got a call from my bank’s fraud center and straightened it all out. We are clear for liftoff.

Always a good sign when you’re allowed to instantly put your money in, but it takes a month to get approved to get your money back
Also a $30 minimum and $25 fee to withdraw funds. So just buying that one cheap pack, and flipping the moments for double your money is out.

I think I'm finally getting a strategy together.  Everyone else may have figured this out already, but it seems like the cards peak while they're involved in a Challenge:  Active Challenges .  People are scrambling to get all the cards needed to complete a challenge to get the Reward.  I'm not bigtime baller (yet) so I'm not going to be able to complete the Seeing Stars Challenge 1, for example.  You need the 12 cards they list to get the special KD card as a Reward.  Those 12 cards avg about $200/ea in the marketplace right now, so you'd have to spend about $2,400 to get the KD card, which may end up being worth that much.  However, I suspect that once the Reward has been given out, and the Challenge is closed, the 12 cards you bought will drop to about 1/2 their original value.  So, I think the strategy is, if I don't think I can afford to complete a Challenge, I'm going to sell the card, and look to buy back after the Challenge is over, if I want it.  I sold my All Star Donovan Mitchell card for $325 that I acquired last Fri since I don't have $3-4k to complete the challenge it's associated with.

Last night I completed the Welcome to the All Star Family Challenge, which ends in 10 days, to get a special Mike Conley card as the Reward.  I kind of stumbled onto this because I already had 2 of the common cards needed and I had no idea why there were listed around $58-$70 each, while most of my other common cards were $13-$14.  Once I found the Challenges page, I figured out why and bought the 3 other cards to complete the Challenge.

The above is all short-term strategy.  I do think keeping packs unopened is also a good approach, if you have the self-control.  🙂  I completed my first set, called The Gift, which is 5 cards around $60-$70 each and 1 card around $200, just because I thought it'd be cool to own a complete set of something, long-term, and it's probably the cheapest set.  They probably had a reward for it awhile back, but that's probably why the cards are cheaper now.  Just sharing my thoughts as I figure some of this out...

They charge $25 to withdraw your money!? My goodness, if the NBA itself wasn’t involved it would be one of the most obvious scams in history.
