Need to buy a new fridge (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
I utilized the need a dishwasher thread and bought a Bosch and love it.

Hoping to get some recommendations for a new fridge.  Really any kind of fridge is in play though better be worth it if costing over 3K or so.

Wife really wants 1 with the freezer on the bottom.  Seems kind of silly but I really want good water and ice from a built in dispenser.

Anyone?

I've got a side by side Samsung with the water and ice.

Zero complaints.  Has separate coolers for fridge and freezer side, so keeps the air flow apart.  Not sure how great of a feature that is, but one that the sales guy wanted to point out.

I've got a Samsung and absolutely love it. We ordered the one with the french door fridge, freezer on bottom and beverage drawer on a black Friday sale 5 years ago, but since it was back ordered they sent us the one without the drawer until they got the other in. This brought up 2 issues to where I wish I didn't order the drink drawer:

1. Due to the drink drawer, there's only one kinda small area you can legitimately put taller items (roughly 2 liter size) if the door is already filled (we always have a gallon of milk and OJ there).

2. The fridge without the drink drawer had an awesome feature that when the ice-maker had filled the indoor dispenser it would continue to make ice, and would shoot the excess down the back into a tray in the freezer. I didn't think a big deal of it at the time, but I can't tell you how many times my family of 4 has run the fridge out of ice. Ice maker seems a little slow, but likely due to it being up in the fridge section.

IMO it's worth dropping the coin to get the nicer (Samsung, LG, Bosch) appliances.

haven't gotten any complaints from people with sub-zeros... but that's a big price tag.

I've been liking Liebherr and Fisher & Paykel lately... I need to look at the latest Samsungs, it appears.

About a year ago, the wife and I were refrigerator shopping and came across the Samsung 4-door (two on the top fridge, and two on the bottom freezer) in the scratch and dent section at Lowes.  It was 30+ cu. ft and we paid about 1450 for it.  Stainless front with the water and ice.  Its been ok, and we have had no problems with it once I replaced the door gasket ($50)  It wasn't the one I wanted, but my wife loved it, and so we went ahead and bought it.  The onyl real complaint is having to squat down to see into the freezer when you are opening the doors on the bottom.

Fast forward to last Saturday, we are looking at a new washer and dryer for the new house.  My wife sees a Samsung 28.2 cu. ft. stainless refrigerator with similar two door top, and a pull out drawer below that, with the freezer below that.  This is the one I wanted a year ago.  It was marked down on sale for 1800.  We were looking for a fridge to put in the current house her family is going to be living in, and we were going to take the one we bought last year to the new construction.  The plan was to go cheap off Craigslist.

You see where this is going, but there's a little twist.

We went back today to purchase the refrigerator for $1798, and happened by one on the floor that wasn't there three days ago.  It's the same style Samsung, but it is 30 cu. ft, almost 2 cu ft bigger than the one we were going to get.  Well, space not being an issue externally, we decided to get that one instead.  It had been a floor model, so just under 3.6 million grimy hands have touched it, but for half price... which was now $1776 at the Home Depot.  How could I turn down more capacity, for less money.  The only catch was they wouldn't deliver it, so I have to pick it up Saturday.  But hey, with my 10% military discount, I ended up getting a damn nice $3500 fridge, that needs a nice cleaning, new under warranty, for $1600 plus tax.

My advice is go to the scratch and dent.  Find the best deal with the least amount of actual damage to it.  Save boatloads.  (unless you just bought one a year ago and feel like you spend way too damn much on refrifgerators, of course)

Thanks to everyone for their posts.  Pain in the ### to buy as have specific dimensions as well (did see other thread) so limited to a degree though my dimensions are more standard than other listed.  70 inch/36 wide and then depth is issue as don't want to look silly sticking out too far (prefer 33 max)

counter depth french door is nice. we have an electrolux (frigidaire) about 5 years old. water/ice dispenser in door. with freezer on the bottom.original  ice maker sucked and they redesigned it but we got a new fridge as part of the deal so we put the old one in the garage. new redesigned ice maker works fine. I think it was about $2,300.

Need a new fridge.  The wife has become enamored with a fridge that 72.5 inches when our built-in space is 71.0 inches.  The cabinets over the fridge have about a 5 inch molding that the wife claims we can remove, trim to fit the new fridge, and re-install.  By we, I mean my handy friend.  Here's a pic of the top of the fridge and the cabinet molding.  What say the handy men of FBGs?

Get a new wife...

I wouldn't remove trim. Wouldn't the rest of the kitchen look "off" then because you'll have less trim there?

Just get a fridge that fits there.

Most wouldn't notice if you take 3/4" off the top and bottom. It's tough to tell if it's trim from that pic though, it could be a "filler" piece so there is less gap over the fridge. How does it compare to the other cabinets? What about a pic from underneath to see the back of that trim piece?

Have you reached under there to see if there is enough gap between the bottom of the trim and the cabinet? If so, you should be fine. I've done this plenty of times in kitchen remodels and it always looks good.

Also, is it possible to take a wide angle shot of that area so we can advise better?

Ok, here's the complete top of the fridge and bottom of the cabinets.  I had to physically restrain the wife from showing me how easy the trim at the bottom of the cabinet would come off.

Yeah, you can take that off. When you cut it, run the top part against a table saw for a nice smooth edge and you are good. Provided there is plenty of room under there for the fridge, of course.

Whatever you do, don't just try and pull it off. There are probably some finish nails on either side that will rip out the front of that piece of trim.

When you say "you" you mean my handy buddy I assume?  My cuts would look like me trying to walk the drunk line this past election day.

How are the other cabinets at the bottom? Any chance you can take a pic with the fridge pulled out from behind?
The other cabinets just border down one side with the dishwasher on the other.  The cabinets at the top of the fridge just go straight across.  We need 2 more inches of clearance max.

Look inside the cabinets on either side of that trim. If you are lucky, there are screws there holding that trim in place.

I meant in comparison to the bottom of the Fridge cabinet, that is likely a trim piece and you can cut it down to where you need it to be. I'd suggest a table saw if at all possible.

And how about this, I find a Lowes 10% of coupon, I have the expensive Samsung 4 door fridge in my cart and a new slide-in gas range we need.  Both our current fridge and range work, but, unlike the trim, they don't work good as new and are certainly ready for replacement.  The total bill is like 4 racks.  I'm jacked up that I found a coupon to save $400.  Call the wife to have her verify that the fridge and the range are the ones "we" want, they are, I'm prepared to push buy.  "Hold on" she says.  "We already bought a new mattress (getting delivered tomorrow), and I feel weird about spending this much money again."

I'm like   you love nothing more than spending money.  She just says "let me think on it some and we can talk more about it tonight."

Now this is totally not like her.  I can think of only two potential reasons for this odd behavior.  First, she's started hiding money; or she's pregnant or something else equally catastrophic and is trying to be responsible.

Unfortunately this is not a win/'win scenario for your hero.  More like a   or holy #### this sucks type of possible reactions.

I'm guessing she asks you tomorrow about when the fridge and range will be arriving... huh?- you said not to buy them. ... of course I didn't- buy them now [coupon void, prices up an extra 30% from the weekend]

Incredibly well done Friday thread set up. Start off with some innocent post about fridges and "trim" (I see what you did there), and evolve from there.

I applaud you sir. Can't wait for the next installment.

Finally had the fridge we decided on yesterday and damned if delivery people didn't ding it up (2 minor and 2 very minor dents).  Delivery was supposed to be 1-5 and changed to 3-7 and didn't arrive til after 8 and there past 9.  Talk about dumb and dumber.  Ideas as to how much they will lower the price for the dings?  Wife very well may say she wants 1 that isn't dented.  Samsung was closed so couldn't find out last night.  We got 11% off the below price for Veteran's day sale at HH Gregg.  I now food showcase is a waste but wanted the flexzone drawer for the kids.

James D - our cabinets aren't 2 different from that and we could have removed trim but instead got a 70inch tall fridge and current space is 70.125 without moving trim and fit just barely.

New fridge time here and looking for some recommendations. Had terrible luck with buying fridges. Five years ago we bought a Samsung French door with bottom drawer freezer and it crapped the bed in 2 years. Samsung tried to fix but it was a lost cause. They cut us a check for original purchase price. Replaced with a Kenmore Elite made by LG. Lasted a whole 3 years before crapping out. Again, unrepairable and after a 2 month plus process Sears finally is giving us a credit for the purchase price.

The technicians who have worked on these fridges all said Samsung and LG are the worst for breaking down. Weird since they also have high marks from consumer reports. I read an article that said the same about technicians again saying they suck. Basically they are great when testing new but they don't last.

Calling on the FFA to help me avoid another lemon. Help me get something that will last 8-10 years. What brands/models have you had luck with. Maybe something like a GE? Looking for the same style we've had, French door with freezer drawer bottom. Ice and water in the door a must.

Shopping tomorrow probably. Thanks for any input.

I'm more of a trim expert.

How much of a discount did you get? When I bought our new appliances the delivery guy told me about a dent on the side that I would have never noticed and it's not visible as it is flanked on either side. He got on the phone with Frigidaire and told them and they offered to take a $100 bucks off. I countered with $200 and they took it right away. It was so easy I wished I had gone higher. I tipped the delivery guy and thanked him for pointing it out as I would not have noticed it.

I got a Whirlpool 7 years ago and have had no issues. However, I refuse to get a refrigerator with a screen. I do not need that hassle.

I recently bought a Samsung. I don't think that's the suggestion you want. I went on several sites where the "repairman" said LG and Samsung are the worst but the reviews are almost universally good. I guess it's hit or miss.
Repair guys that worked on both my fridges said same. LG and Samsung are terrible. 95% of what Sears sells seems to be Kenmore (LG), LG, or Samsung. I like the layout of those the best but i don't want another lemon.

The above review sounds good. Guess it's an older model as the review is 2 years old. Net cost $300 after applying credit from purchase cost of my 3 year old model that went out.

That extra drawer ended up seeming pretty cool after I initially thought the idea seemed kind if silly. Thought a little about doing one of the door in door things but seemed a little gimicky as well and looked like something that could break easy.

Honestly forget exactly what they offered but wife wanted replacement.  I think we could have negotiated what they said though if I remember it was in the 200-300 range.

I bought a Samsung a few years ago and the ice maker is a POS.  It gets condensation and freezes up so I have to take a hair dryer every few weeks and thaw it out.

It is a French door style with freezer on the bottom and it holds a ton of food but if I was buying another fridge I would look elsewhere.

Well, this fridge made it not quite 7 years. Better than the first two I guess. THREE fridges crapping the bed since we bought this house in 2010. Crazy.

Fridge 4 arrived today. Went with a Whirlpool from Lowes this time. Bought the 5 year extended warranty.

Can I just get 10 years out of one of these things? My parents' fridge is 33 frigging years old. 😅

I have done my own maintenance on my fridge, and despite one issue with the freezer i never, ever want to get rid of it. It was new with the house in 1993 and was one of the last fridges that were legally allowed to have the ozone destroying freon.

It is still sealed and has not yet released it's content's to destroy the world.

I guess it is difficult to engineer a fridge that can reliably use chemicals that do not destroy the environment, which is too bad because freon was really easy to engineer for it seems.
