New Orleans Saints at Philadelphia Eagles - Wild Card Game (3 Viewers)

Philly wins this game for 2 reasons.

1. NO won't be able to stop their run. Philly has the NFL best rush offense and NO has shown they can't stop the run this year. That won't change in Philly.

2. Turn overs. People like to point out that Brees should carve up an average to below average Philly D and that might be true. I fully expect him to post yards and score. What nobody is talking about however is that Philly creates turnovers with their aggressive style of D. They are 3rd in the NFL in that regard, behind only Sea and KC. 9 of Brees 12 Ints this year have occurred on the road. Philly has a takeaway/giveaway ratio of +12 on the year. NO is 0.

NO is also 0-3 with Brees on the road in the playoffs historically, 0-3 vs. playoff teams this year on the road as well.
With most games, this is always a factor but it'll be crucial for the Birds to try and intercept Brees. He'll rack up the passing yards but if he throws two picks and the Eagles can snatch a fumble then I think they win the game.
I agree. Seattle stripped & scored on Brees early and that was all she wrote. I don't think they even got another TO the rest of the game but that was devastating.

The INTs have been the story vs StL, NE, NYJ, CAR as well.

Is Wolff practicing?

Boykin on Colston might be a bit of a mismatch, don't you think?

Pierre has been out, he may miss this game. Regardless, we may finally see a healthy dose of Sproles.

Yea Boykin is not moving from the slot. He's too good there. I wonder how much Wolff plays.

As for Sproles, Kendricks has him too. He really did a great job on Witten and Murray. 2 turnover forced and he stop them a few times 1-on-1. We need anoter performance like that from him.

Just in time to amp me up before the weekend. Such lazy crap. Do people still seriously bring up Booing Santa and Cheering Irvin's injury?

"Stories of fans throwing snowballs, batteries and empty liquor bottles at players and coaches from the opposing team are legendary. A few years back one drunken Philly fan intentionally vomited on an 11-year-old girl."
The above statement gets me SUPER fired up because in the context of the article it implies that A. he was at an Eagles game, which he was not (phillies) and B. that he was from Philly, which he was not (Jersey).

So lame that this get an entire article. Every. Effing. Year.

Sounded like he was talking about Philly fans in general, regardless of where their mailing address is.

I get it but he's also referring to "examples of poor fandom" that happened more than 50 years and three stadiums ago. Come up with some new material for god's sake. Its lazy "journalism" at its worst.

This part has been proven false:

In 1999, they booed Matthew Scott, the first person in the United States to receive a hand transplant, after he dribbled the ceremonial opening pitch at a Phillies game with his weakened new hand.

Here's the video (starts around the 1:00 mark). Sounds like a lot of cheering to me. F'n people just make stuff up.

As usual, Saints fans are traveling and will be partying. I hear it's 4-5K, though not really sure.

Is there a true assessment for what to expect for those wearing the black & gold and showing some typical big easy boisterousness?

I'm hearing Philly will have undercover cops wearing Saints gear at the game in a nap effort to derail violence by Eagles fans. This was a result of a Lions fan wearing a Barry Sanders jersey getting beat up after the Det game.

Should be a good game. I have no idea who will win. I hope the good Saints show up and not the bad Saints. It might be a game then.

Pierre ruled out.
This just means we won't rely on the screen game as much and Ingram will pound the snot out of the ball.

That's the best I can do for a silver lining.
We can see a lot of Sproles, also Khiry.

I just have a feeling Peyton really (really) abandons the run in this one and let's it fly. I think they're wanting points and reverting to form here. No more Ryan-ball on the road; t'aint working.

I can't find any silver lining with PT being out except if we advance he will be fresh for the next one. Ingram will need to be the man now. Feed the beast.

Ain't no telling which Peyton will show up tomorrow. I'd really, really, really like for us to go up early. That's all I ask, and it needs to happen.

An opening drive TD would be huge.

It's funny, you give the guy a defense and next thing you know he's Jim Mora. Like I said, I think they'll let it rip, cold weather or not.

People like to discuss how poor the NO run game is, but in FF terms they were the no. 8 FF points scored for RBs. I know, that's just magic football; but on the road the trouble has come in scoring and closing out games (NE & CAR especially), not necessarily in moving the ball and TOP.

Well I gotta say the Saint fans in here are class acts. Refreshing after some of the Dallas fans we had to deal with last week. I've always had a soft spot for NO so if they win, I'm happy pulling for them from here on out.

All that said, my prediction is 31-28. If you got in on the -21/2 you're looking good ;-)

I think the loss of Thomas is a blow personally. I feel the Birds though MUST score 30. They do that and win the turnover battle by at least one and then I think we got it.

No result would surprise me though. Either team could win close, tight or blow out. Should be best game of the week. While I'm at it, I think Indy PASTES KC and I think GB beats SF maybe even handily. SD pulls off the one road upset. Bengals stink this time of year under Marvin.

Saints are 0-5 on the road in the playoffs all time. 0-6 after Saturday night. The will not be able to shut down the run
Man, you really hate the Saints. I assume you're a good guy because I remember you giving me some great advice when I went to New Orleans, but you pop up talking trash in every Saints thread.

The reason I have hope for the Saints is because every time they looked like crap on the road, it was against teams with great pass rushes. Four of the five losses were against teams in the top 10 in sacks, and the Jets aren't far off. Despite that, hopefully Payton is patient with the run, sets up some PA passes, and keep Foles off the field and out of synch. If Payton comes out chucking, I don't think the Saints can win.
Yes I hate the Saints as much as the Cowboys, Ohio and the SEC, living there for 13 years did it for me. Losing Pierre Thomas hurts the Saints big time.

If the Saints can contain McCoy to somewhat similar numbers as they did Forte, Lynch, and Gore, they'll win. If they give up multiple big plays to McCoy and/or broken coverages to Desean or Cooper, then it's panic time and bad Brees will likely rear his head. One of the other Saints guys in this thread can chime in, but it always seems like Brees throws interceptions in multiples, either it's none or it's 3. Get him once, and it's like he's jinxed for the day...

I think the two biggest things that can change this game are the Eagles pass rush, and the Saints run game. If Ingram and Robinson can get something going, and the Saints O-line can keep Brees clean, they should win. I expect Kelly and the Eagles to challenge Armstead similar to how Carolina did, and he'll be crucial to a Saints victory.

The NFL fan in me wants to see a shootout, to see if Foles can keep pace with Brees. Should be a good game either way.

I think the Saints are the better team, but in all my brackets I took Philly. Weather, Pierre Thomas being out and Phillys hot streak just have me convinced the Saints aren't going to show up big.

Does anyone know who the primary RB for the Saints will be instead of Pierre? Khiry got most of the carries last week and Ingram the week before.

I'm going to guess that we see Ingram lead with a 2:1 or 3:2 split with Robinson getting most of the minor part with some Sproles carries (<5). Sproles should get most of Pierre's receptions.

Won't get rich predicting what Payton will do.

I was feeling fairly confident until Pierre was ruled out. He keeps so many drives alive. I expect we'll be telegraphing plays all day with Ingram = run and Sproles = pass.

This will be the third playoff game Pierre has missed and we lost the other two. This really sucks.

Saints averaged, what like 33 points in those two games? I'll take that now.

They also were without him games 4-13 in 2010 and they went 8-2.

More than doable.

Doable, sure, any game any day is doable. But I went from confident to pessimistic. I think Pierre is the catalyst for a lot of what Payton wants to do. Without him and with these receivers being largely absent all year, I wonder who the heck is going to step up and convert those two or three extra third downs Pierre always gives us when the chips are down. Maybe Lance Moore.

Either way, I just wish we had our best back for once on these road games we're supposedly incapable of winning.

the pierre thomas being out thing is saints homers already reaching for an excuse. weather will be the big one and rightfully so. to their credit most saints fans in here were great and realize a loss won't be because of pierre thomas. sproles, and even ingram for that matter, will be more than fine.

Brees home v. away:

home 93 games, 60-33, 66.86 comp%, 211 td, 85 int, 100.5 rate

away 93 games, 50-43, 64.98 comp%, 152 td, 92 int, 90.2 rate.

Based on these numbers Brees is significantly worse on the road than at home, fewer wins, more losses, 59 fewer tds with 7 more ints..in a word, he's 'human' on the road..superman at home but not nearly the same guy on the road..

They barely beat the Bucs on the road, and were beaten down by the lowly Rams in STL..

it's going to be bone chilling cold...That's a significant advantage for the Eagles...

I dont understand the talk of the 03 Bucs..this is a team that has a habit of folding like a cheap suit on the road, I don't see this game being any different

Woke up this morning and its a balmy -5 degrees. Looks it'll still be in the teens for game time. Should be a fun one.

I know the news hit the city like a bombshell yesterday but c'mon a little too much deflation going on here. Hey the defense lost those games, or more specifically Gregg Williams' calls in those two games. It was a blow when Pierre left the 9ers game, but then that was a dirty hit, a surprise, and he was going to be a big part of the offense that day. This year the Saints have been practicing all week without him and have likely been planning to be without him. These Eagles have very little to nothing in common with the style of football played by SF and Seattle.

I also think no time like the present, this team is about challenges and breaking records and benchmarks. Well, here's as big of a one as they could want. Payton has buried every bad Saints gris-gris but this one.

I think Sproles can fill Pierre's role ably and I will add it's about time they use him more fully. He'll be fresh, we know that much, and maybe they were intending to use him all along here and maybe that's why they have had him in reserve, we shall see.

Do you remember that Seattle game? Reggie Bush dropped a sure fire TD (one of several mistakes that cost them that game) and spent much of the game on the bench with one of those mystery injuries he gets. The next year Bush is gone, and the Saints get who? Sproles. Pierre goes out vs the 9ers and guess what, they were ready, Sproles went 15/119/1 receiving. Huge day against a championship quality defense.

No reason this offense can't push it down the field.

A little Saints-Eagles trivia, just because I enjoy this stuff. The Saints' first franchise victory, first franchise road victory, and Sean Payton's first playoff victory have all come against the Eagles.

11/5/67 - The Saints got their first victory ever as a franchise against the Philadelphia Eagles at Franklin Field. It would be appropriate if they were to get their first road playoff win in franchise history at Lincoln Field.

They scored 7 offensive points (getting KO return, INT return and a fumble return TDs) in winning 31-24. Walt "the Flea" Roberts had a kickoff return TD, a fumble return TD and a pass receiving TD all in the same game. I seriously wonder if that's ever been done again in any NFL game.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/196711050nor.htm

The Eagles lead the Saints all time 16-12, including 1-1 in the playoffs, both in NO.

The series has been a little streaky with PHI getting 14 of those wins in three different streaks. The Saints have won 4 of the last 5, all against Andy Reid and his magic playcalling skills. However, the streak also coincides with Sean Payton coming to town 06. Payton is 1-0 at Lincoln.

The two playoff games:

1/3/93 - What can we say, this encapsulated the old Saints. Jim Mora and maybe the only defense that could challenge Philly's defense at the time, get into a shootout in the Dome. The Saints had 4 LBers who made the Pro Bowl in the same year and they held a 20-10 lead in the 4th Quarter. Should have been a lock. Bobby Hebert being the loser he was basically throws up all over the field, throws 3 picks and takes a safety in the 4th, and the Eagles go on to outscore the Saints 26-0 in the 4th quarter. Eric Allen and Heath Sherman have big games - Saints lose 36-20.

1/13/07 - Sean Payton's first playoff win. - The Eagles and Saints had played earlier in the year in a terrific game which the Saints won 27-24. The score would be the same but the script was very different. The big memories here for Saints and Eagles fans alike was Deuce McAllister draped with Eagle defenders doing his rugby imitation, dragging a green carpet on his back into the end zone to make it 20-21. He would score again in the 3rd to make it 27-21. Then Reid going for a FG instead of a TD and later punting in the 4th quarter on the road, and then the Saints holding the ball for what seemed like 11 minutes to strangle the remaining life out of the game. Deuce goes 25 total touches, 163/2. Saints win 27-24 and go on to their first NFCC game ever, Dome goes wild in disbelief.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Philadelphia ran the ball using some sort of zone-read play 304 times, gaining 1,725 yards in the process, for a very impressive 5.7 yards per carry. The Saints only saw 36 zone-read plays all year, and they didn't handle them very well: New Orleans allowed 5.6 yards per carry on those 36 plays. If the Eagles can manage it, they'll happily run the read-option 36 times against the Saints on Saturday night.
This is a big factor IMO. Yes Ryan is better than Davis as a DC, and NO has the better overall defense. But it comes down to the players on the field and their reactions to the read option. If Philly can operate it properly with Foles making the correct decisions, it could be a long night for the NO D.

This is me. I really don't have a feel for this game at all. I just know I'm scared to death of Brees and Graham. Sproles worries me a ton too.
Same here. No idea what's going to happen, I'm pretty much 50/50 as to who will win. Just hoping it's a great game, if they lose I won't be terribly disappointed because they would've lost to a HoF QB in the first round of the playoffs that no one anywhere expected them to be a part of.

This is from late November, and I'm not sure if much as changed...

The Saints actually have the best regular-season road record in the NFL since 2009 (24-13).
http://www.saintsnews.net/2013/11/25/saints-best-regular-season-road-record-nfl-since-2009-24-13/

Would love to be able to figure out how to find road records by NFL team since some given year...
Home and Away records from 2002-2011, FWIW.

http://www.philsteele.com/blogs/2012/Aug12/DBAug8.html

Top 5 are:

New England (56-24)

Indy (52-28)

Phi (49-30-1)

Pitt (47-33)

NYG (45-34)
