New Orleans Saints @ Seattle Seahawks Playoff Thread (1 Viewer)

W.T.H.

This is today?

We'll see increasing rain chances as we head through the morning and afternoon. Winds are already gusting up to 40 and 50 mph this morning.
http://www.king5.com/weather

The rain could turn heavy at times Friday night as a cold front approaches overnight, pushing inland Saturday morning. Expect substantial rain (possibly up to or exceeding an inch) together with gusty winds. Snow levels will jump up to 5-6000 feet later Friday into early Saturday. This combined with the heavy precipitation could lead to some minor river flooding on Saturday. Our computer projections suggest this cold front will move through before daybreak on Saturday. However a strong onshore flow will lead to occasionally heavy showers throughout the day Saturday. Winds will also increase Saturday, peaking Saturday afternoon.
We've all seen enough weather threads that amount to nothing in TSP (bench Manning!) but could we really see max 30 mph winds tomorrow in-game?
Both teams will be dealing with it for what its worth. I see it effecting the kicking game. The grip on the ball will be essential for QB's. Perhaps more running plays by both teams.
If I'm looking for straws, I will take both Wilson and Brees being limited by the wind. It would be a positive in my view.
I agree. I think anything that keeps the score down (and close) would be good for the Saints
If both teams need long, sustained drives built on the running game and short passes, it's very good for the Saints.

50 mph gusts tomorrow? Are you kidding me?
Seriously I like it from a Saints perspective believe it or not.
As I posted earlier -- and got some disagreement -- a true kraape-fest of a weather game turns things into a coin flip, IMHO. Just beacause the chances of weird random stuff happening increases.

Well, looks like I'm eating crow a bit. I can't find the post I was thinking of, maybe it was a different topic and I crossed them in my head. I'm sorry about that, I was wrong with my supposed evidence. However, I still don't see how you can spend an entire post refuting something I said and then add adjectives about "some" fans, yet it's supposedly not supposed to be aimed at me.

Fixed. I can't believe some of you Saint fans actually believe this. A game coming down to running would favor the Seahawks. That is their bread and butter. It seems you guys are all excited now because you ran on the Eagles! Didn't everyone run on the Eagles this year?

Seattle's running game seems like it's been running on fumes as of late. That's some stale bread and store-brand margarine.

I dunno - don't you think holding Forte, Lynch, and McCoy to relatively bad days is something to lean on?

And how did AZ's rushing game rank before their game in Seattle? 23rd.

The Saints' game is holding the ball, not necessarily running for 120+ per game.

The Seahawks will have to do more than just run the ball to win. The Seahawks are third in yards per completion this year. They are not a team built to throw short passes on every passing down. They are also not a great third down team.

If the average Seattle pass attempt travels less than 7 yards, the Seattle offense will not get moving. If the wind is gusting at 50 mph and the Seahawks attempt to throw the long ball, they will not be successful.

Jeezuz, Holder.

I'm going to think of who I respect from the local Saints beat media.... nope, can't think of anyone.
Interesting tidbit for you SaintsinDome since you like tidbits it seems. What is the only team in the NFL that hasn't scored a defensive touchdown or a special teams touchdown all year? There is only 1 in the entire league.

That is an excellent one.

I agree.

The last time this happened... was a long time ago - good lord was it Sharper in 2009?

I will add that White took one to the goal line vs the 9ers, sure score, and... K'nick punched the ball out from behind. That was right there, stupid, dumb play by White, but there it is 100% correct.

In fact the difference in takeaways (not just TO ratio), especially INTs, and what they do with them is a big reason to favor the Hawks. The Saints' defense has been great but this is one big factor in being "dominating."

The Seahawks defense was a fun team to watch and own in FF all year because a score at home always seemed like a good chance to happen. And it happened in Game 1, boom, game over.

Interesting enough, even though the Saints haven't scored a defensive/special teams touchdown all year, they still have the highest PPG difference at home in the league. All offense.

Here's another area where the Saints have slipped - kick and punt returns.

Great KO return by Sproles to get the winning drive vs PHI started, but he hasn't scored a TD since the GB Game 1 in 2011.

I was really hoping that Chris Williams guy would stick around.

Props to you for admitting this. I think between the multiple threads these fanbases have crossed, some statements have been misunderstood and magnified.

I freely admit to bringing up our Super Bowl on this board, but the purpose was to express how different following a Super Bowl team is from a standard playoff team. On our run, it felt like every ball bounced our way and every call went our way. So, after that experience it's easy to look at our team and think, meh, we're not having a season like 2009, so a championship is unlikely.

Now, Seattle comes into this because I think it's possible you're experiencing what we experienced 4 years ago - that feeling that you'll always get what you need to win. Doctor Detroit even agreed with me by pointing out the Tampa game, where despite a 21 point deficit, everyone felt they'd still win.

That's the only thing we 'know' from having followed a champion. For one year, all of our bad luck evaporated. Seahawks fans are probably there now. I hope you are, because there's little sweeter as a sports fan than to follow a perennial loser that finally climbs the mountain.

There is a reason that paper doesn't get delivered anymore. They have taken a very anti Saint stance. especially Duncan. They went with the league BS on Bounty gate too.

WWL is where I get my sports news. There and Saints report and if I want to read a News paper its the Advocate.

Times pic is hurt because Payton doesn't cater to their nonsense and put up with BS in the press room. The TP also leaked a lot of information about the team in the past to the media through unofficial channels that rubbed Payton the wrong way so they are often a bit at odds with each other. Google Duncan and Saints and you will find quite a bit of stuff.

Except it can't be said for the Saints over the course of a season. In one game which everyone admits was a terrible showing by the Saints, it was the case.

But in general, that's not the case for the Saints. Saints fans are hanging their collective hat on that game being an aberration.

I actually used to like Holder on the Sports Hangover on 690, but you know what he's just a guy, you get opinions on this board and even this thread that are better. Like him but he's no "beat writer expert."

The Pic canned almost everyone and those they didn't walked out of disgust, then the Pic brought in guys like Holder.

Seriously though, Pic, NOA, WWL AM all stink in my book. We haven't had good sports writing or radio journalism here in a long, long time.

As an fyi to Hawks fans the Picayune was shut out by the Advocate in a surprising coup d'etat, they do show a little resentment from time to time but they have also been shut out of some inside discussions I do believe.

That explains why there are two different words.

Another reason why the Saints must not rely on a pass heavy attack even if it wasn't raining. Seattle defense relies on a brazen tactic of rampant contact and interference with WR's. A running game or at least a balanced offense will make them less able to accomplish this style of defense. More slant type routes with cuts will need to be called.

I think it's generally B.S. to suggest that a team is trying to get away with breaking the rules in a situation like this. Seattle has more pass interference and defensive holding calls because they refuse to let guys get open in the deep secondary and because teams are constantly trying to come back from behind, in my opinion. You want a first down, catch the ball. Don't beg for a flag.

Yeah, sometimes they mug a guy, but they play good defense.

Well the Wall street Journal is not a New Orleans based paper but they do confirm a lot of what I have seen. The key is do the DB's do it past 5 yards and before the ball is released? I think if your honest with yourself that is an infraction that should be flagged but if it happens on every single play then what are the odds that it gets flagged on every single play? None. The good news though is the officiating crew for this game is the one that officiated the Seattle/Arizona game that threw 4 penalties on the SH in the 4th quarter.

The odds are probably as good as they call holding every play. Seattle fine with taking their chances when they need to. This same secondary has been doing it for 3 years now. If it was cheating, they'd call it tighter and make it an emphasis. Personally I've never been a fan of PI the way it's written. Way too many times a 40 yard penalty happens on some hand checking. Needs to be reviewable and they need to let them play. Grab the arm, wrap em up, grab the jersey and pull... throw a flag. Otherwise, let em play.

It's kind if interesting to me how SEA had this stretch of Hilton, Andre and Shorts all having big days against them... and then nothing, nada, zip, no WR or TE has gone over 100 yards against them since (Boldin got close at 8/6/93/0).

And then we saw what they did vs the Saints. Just plain all out coverage all over the field plus terrific technique. Would be nice to find the weakness there but ...

Expect the no-calls to get worse in the playoffs. This season, NFL officials called 12.2 penalties a game, but in last week's wild-card round, they called 7.8. There has been a 41% drop in postseason penalties since the 2008 playoffs, while in the regular season, penalties are up 8.9% in that time.
First of all that's just crazy, and must reflect a league decision.

Now the article claims there's holding...

Pereira said aggressive pass-coverage teams like Seattle "test" referees early in the game with a few potentially obvious pass-interference infractions. "They want to see what kind of tone the officials are going to set," he said, adding that he expects to see a couple of penalties called but also the usual brand of Seahawks grabbing.

Game-film analysis reveals plenty of instances in which more penalties could have been called. ...
... but I agree with the above comment by Henry, let's just get on with it.

Former Seahawks quarterback Brock Huard, now a radio host for ESPN Radio in Seattle, said the contact between receivers and the Seahawks' defensive backs forces offenses to change their entire game plan. For instance, basic routes like the skinny post, on which a receiver bounces slightly toward the middle of the field (in the direction of the goal post), must be scrapped because receivers can't accelerate fast enough after contact.

Even if the receivers do get to full speed, the long arms of defensive backs such as Sherman simply poke the ball away if a pass is anywhere near them. That goes for "vertical" routes, too, the straight-ahead patterns that are a favorite of the Saints, the Seahawks' opponent Saturday.

Former Seahawks quarterback Warren Moon said the only way to combat the grabby defensive backs is by running plenty of slant-and-go routes and other patterns that involve receivers making cuts. The idea is to get the defense's big cornerbacks on the move and hamper their ability to get their hands on a receiver.

Waiting for the officials to save you isn't a strategy. "If you think they're going to be called and expect that to be the solution to the problem, you're going to be sadly mistaken," said former Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, who said the Seahawks' persistent interference happens on nearly every play. "They've perfected the art."
This is life in the NFL. The Pats have been doing it for years, and it's not like they just go out and clobber people.

DBs no longer intimidate anyone in the NFL, it's not allowed. There is an artform to this and all season long the Seahawks far outstrip every team in pass defense, and the Saints are No. 2 in the league and they are far behind statistically (unlike their run defense which isn't that far behind).

Perfect example was the early deep pass attempt to Meachem in Game 1. Go get the ball, the Saints have repeatedly beaten everyone on that play, Sherman just covered it perfectly.

Just do it.

I've been much funnier in these threads, you're just too angry to see it.

Go watch film of every team and you'll see a bunch of flags that could be thrown for PI that weren't. Seattle plays closer to that line than most but grabby DBs aren't limited to Seattle. Earl Thomas is why they can play like they play. His ability to close ground gives the CBs the netting they need when their press coverage is beaten. Add in a great pass rush and you've got the #1 pass defense.

Aw, see, I was just starting tithing you turned the corner. When people disagree on a message board it isn't always because one of them was offended or angry. It's perfectly possible to get into a message board debate without either of those emotions. I rarely get angry at what some anonymous ding dong on the internet says. Most of the time I argue, especially when people say I'm angry or offended, I'm grinning precisely because I'm not.

Gotta give you that one. Well played.
I've been much funnier in these threads, you're just too angry to see it.
Oh. Well, then, you're too dense to see it.

There is a reason they have a bunch of late round scrubs "playing so well" at CB. It's a joke what they get away with on a weekly basis and I am in the camp that thinks DB's should be able to play more aggressively.

Definitely. The only reason the Seahawks secondary has a couple of all pros in it and is stacked with good backups is because they break the rules. Solid analysis there.
