Hometown is close to my neck of the woods, pretty good.

BBQ is prob on of the only culinary flavors this city lacks a strong diverse choice in.

Meh on Brooklyn Crab. Food isn't that good, but if you're drinking, playing cornhole, and hanging in the summer, pretty good time.
Agree Brooklyn Crab is more about atmosphere
the wife is a big crab fan, been wanting to go there for a while now. she had in mind a kind of glamorous spot on the water- I google mapped it to show the parking lot it lived in, which dissuaded her a bit. hearing it's not that great will further dissuade.

I have been there twice and do like it.  Not the best food and expensive but it is fun and a great place with kids as it has a ton of activities to do there.  Also, yes it is across the street from the Fairway parking lot but it does have good views of the water especially if sitting on top level.  Look you are not getting an authentic Maryland crab boil but it is the closest thing you will get without driving down to Baltimore.  If you do go just know what to expect and that it can get insanely crowded on that nice summer day.

I've been there about 5-6 times. They have an 8 hole mini golf, so I've gone on a few occasions with the kids while meeting other parents. For that scenario, on a nice day, at a reasonable hour when it isn't slammed, I'd prob recommend. Good to get tanked with friends while the kids play in a fairly enclosed area.

To take the trip from the LES, it is def not a convenient location, you'd hate yourself for doing so.

On the topic of Brooklyn, if you want some of the best sushi you'll ever have, and not forking out Sushi of Gari Omakase type dollars, Ki Sushi on Smith Street.

good stuff- thanks.

this was true of Tomoe on Sullivan waaaaay back in the day too. as with every other place that's good and not killer-pricey- and no reservations- the lines got out of control. been over a decade since I've eaten there- no idea if it's still around. gb was a bartender who lived across the street... he used to watch the line and pick his moment to run over. he said they had their own fishing boat(s) and table at the fish market (when it was still Fulton St) which ensured they got the pick of the catch.

dammit. now I'm jonesing for it.

When was the last time we were hit by a real snowstorm? Like at least a foot in the city?

I'm drawing a blank... I needed to find documents from early in 2016, and in my journey, I found some awesome photos from the blizzard we had in Jan of 2016, it was like 2 feet.

I enjoy a snowstorm like that maybe once a year, but we haven't had anything close since, right?

Since the season is basically over, it'll be going on 4 years without a snowstorm of over a foot by next winter, is that right?

Yea, the last big storm was in Jan. 2016. There have been a few near double digit ones but it's been mild the past few winters. I'll take it!

I actually don't mind shoveling but don't have much space to put the snow, especially when we get a few storms in a row.

Yea, didn't think we had hit a foot in a while. 4 years is decent drought without getting a 12 inch storm, hoping we're due for a big one next year. My kids will be almost 7 & 4 by then, timing will be perfect.

Newbie Tourist Report

tl/dr: Fairfield Inn @ Times Square has good breakfast and good location and price.  Subway not overly complicated.  Walking great for seeing things.  Central Park and 9/11 Memorial don't miss.  Most people helpful, always felt safe.  Discount theater tickets are good deal.  Don't take a leisurely pedi-cab through Central Park. Pizza slice for dinner is very economical.  NYC is amazing and we just saw the tip of the iceberg.

Full

We just returned from a long weekend in NYC.  We were taking my daughter to check out three colleges she got accepted to and do as much sightseeing as possible in just 3 days.  None of us had ever been to NYC.

Took the redeye from LAX so arrived at JFK at 8am.  We took a cab (fixed price $61 + tip) from JFK to our hotel since cabs were cheaper than UBER/Lyft and I knew they could fit our luggage.  At this point we were not brave enough to try and figure out the subway to our hotel.  Went right by Empire State Building which was cool.  We were right by our hotel, but due to one way street had to circle the block -- took 13 minutes to circle block, glad it was a fixed price.

We stayed at the Fairfield Inn at 330 W. 40th Street, right across from the Port Authority Bus Terminal.  It was just under $600 for the three night stay.  It included a hot buffet breakfast each morning which was really good for a hotel and I figure it saved us a ton of money and time by have a big breakfast right on site.  We arrived around 10am on Friday and hoped to drop our luggage, but they actually had our room ready so we were able to check in.  Since breakfast went to 11am they let us have breakfast that morning which was awesome.  We actually liked everything about this hotel and all the staff were very nice.

The initial plan had been to get a pass for the double decker buses that take you around to see the sights since we really did not have much time.  However, with the weather forecast being for rain and/or snow each day we decided sitting up top would not be fun.

So, with the weather being cold, but nice, we decided to walk from our hotel to Marymount Manhattan -- about 2.5 miles that took us through time square, through the theater area (daughter is a musical theater person), through Central Park and then to MM College.  This walk could have been sponsored by the NYC tourism board because it was amazing.  Central Park was covered in snow and it was beautiful.  Was not overly crowded, we were dressed warmly, and every so often a few snow flakes would drift down.  Classic moment was watching the facial expression of the two young Asian girl tourists as the pedi-cab driver showed them the amount being charged to their credit card -- $4.99 a minute so I can only imagine how much it was.

Toured MMC (a no-go) then headed back through Central Park and saw a bunch of sights there, another great walk.  Google and google maps were our friends.

One of the leads of Mean Girls is an alumni of the musical theater program at my daughter's high school, so we had 8pm tickets to see that.  We headed to Ellen's Stardust Diner for lunch/dinner around 4pm. Had to wait about 20 minutes, not too bad.  It is somewhat expensive diner food, but the wait staff take turns singing so it is basically a show also.  With a musical theater kid this is the type of stuff you end up doing.  It was fun and entertaining and glad we did it -- all in is was about $130 for the three of us.  Not bad since the show and food were both good.

Walked back to our hotel and took a nap.  About 7:15 we walked to theater which was about 15 minute walk.  Mean Girls was really good and then after the show we got to go backstage with Kyle.  He gave us a tour and my daughter was in heaven.  After the show we grabbed a slice of pizza and wandered back to hotel.

Saturday morning is was snowing so we got a late start.  Ubered up to Manhattanville.  After tour and lunch, Ubered down to 9/11 Memorial rather than our hotel.

Got into the 9/11 Memorial about 4pm.   There is a lot to see and it is quite an experience.  Talk with the docents, many were there that day and have stories to tell.  We moved along at a decent pace, but still ended up spending about 4 hours there.  And that was kind of rushing through the last parts of it (the before 9/11 and after 9/11 sections).   Glad we got to this.

We then walked down to Battery Park so we could get our first glimpse of Statue of Liberty.  Wandered around a bit then caught an Uber back to hotel.  Went back out and wandered around Times Square just checking things out.

Sunday morning took the Subway downtown to Pace.  Port Authority Bus Terminal was right across street so it was simple and google maps had told us which lines we could take to get to Pace.  Was at Pace until about 4pm.  First glitch of trip was Alaska notifying me that our Monday 1pm flight was cancelled.  Ended up calling and getting a 7:30am flight through Portland to get us home.  Hoping overnight snow storm does not mess that up.

From Pace we started to walk across Brooklyn Bridge, but decided did not have time.  So walked down Broadway towards Battery Park in order to see Statue of Liberty during day.  Saw Federal Hall, Trinity Church, New York Stock Exchange,  and the "Charging Bull" (line to take picture next to the Bull's balls was a bit longer than line to take picture with his head, fwiw) along the way.   Wandered around Battery Park, looked at the Statue of Liberty and a cool carousel,  then back towards 9/11 Memorial where we caught the subway uptown.

Took subway to Time Square so my wife and daughter could buy last minute theater tickets  (48th Ave and 8th I think).  They got center, row C, tickets to see Chicago for less than half price.  Show started at 7 so we had time to walk to Radio City Music Hall to see it.  Went by the NBC building where Jimmy Fallon is filmed.  Stopped for a slice of pizza on way to theater.

Left my wife and daughter in line and at this point it was raining/snowing and I walked back to our hotel, got warm, and watched out the window to see if this big storm actually was going to happen and hope our flight did not get canceled/delayed.

We had planned to take the subway to our 1pm flight since it was a simple train ride, but with the change of time and weather (and my daughter getting sick around 3AM) we ended up taking a taxi to JFK.  Snow stopped around 4am and at 5:45am it took just about 40 minutes to get to JFK.   Got home 4pm.  If not for my daughter being sick the whole way home, it would have been a perfect trip.

Amazing report- thanks for sharing that!

I hope you got to really explore Port authority and spent a lot of time there.

floppinho was invited to apply/test in to Hunter High School (they invite the top whatever amount of previous 5th grade test scores).

when we looked at the sample test, it had math he'd never seen before, which means most 5th graders hadn't. not sure how public school kids are supposed to take that thing- other than prepping, which is ####### idiotic for a free/public school. but we got a tutor and prepped him, even though we've always been against that... and we were always losing that arms race to people who started prepping before their kid even got the invite and were also shelling out crazy loot for extensive programs.

just found out he didn't get in. his gb who did the extensive prepping did (we're really happy for her).

I think we're all relieved- he's loving his school and felt like he would've stayed even if he'd gotten in, and it continues until HS, so he doesn't have to stress about that like the rest of NYC. would've been nice to not have the decision made for us, but even the prepping ended up being great general tutoring for him... really helped his writing skills.

if any of you have kids in 5th grade- even though middle schools won't look at the state test so it seems like not a big deal, Hunter will- so make sure your kids are ready for it if you're thinking about Hunter. and then prep the ever loving #### out of them.

Yikes. I prepped for the SAT and GMAT but couldn’t imagine doing something along those lines at such a young age. I guess times change and kids grow up faster. All the best to your little one Flop.

people prep their 4 yos for the gifted and talented test for kindergarten. there's a giant industry built up around it. completely insane... AND widening the gap between the haves and the have-nots and limiting diversity (socio-economic) in the g&t programs. for ####### public schools.

I didn't even know there was test prep for the SATs or GRE when I took them.

How come I never realized we had ones in the same grade? Thought they were a year apart.

We're looking at a ton of junior highs but it's come down to two. If your security clearance gets approved I'll PM you.

We didn't prep for the G&T back in the day. She got in the 99th percentile but didn't matter, we knew we wanted a non G&T (PS3.) It's been a great six years.

Floppinho's in 6th grade. Yours is in 5th, right?

Glad PS3 has been good for you guys. G&t was a needed game changer for us and was amazing for him and now for floppinha...other options for us were not great.

Eta... Which middle schools are you looking at

I say we didn't prep but we did do Kumon math every summer. She doesn't do Mandarin school or ballet in July & August so it was an easy way to keep her busy (one right down the block.) So that probably helped, she has always smoked STEM classes. Was the first (& for 2 years, only) girl in Lego-robotics. But I suspect she'll go into performing arts. She's in her third year of preprofessional ballet & moved from Technique A to Technique B this year. About 18 more months she'll be en pointe.

tbh my biggest goal with my youngest is to just stay out of her way. She crushes everything with ease. I have never pushed her hard in any direction. I just spend a lot of time bonding with her and built her confidence up a lot when she was young (super unscientific method of challenge & praise lol.) I guess something took.

I probably subconsciously put too much pressure on my son. He's in his junior year in college and doing fine, but at some level I wonder if he's pushing himself more just to not disappoint me. My daughter knows no matter what she is loved. I feel like I am unconditional with her, if that makes sense.  Maybe it's just the daughter v son dynamic?

Kids are a crapshoot. I got lucky twice. That's probably the best explain.

We visited & applied to 8. Which is down from the 22 elementary schools we considered.

Salk

Those look great- lots of PS11 kids at those first six and very happy. don't know the last two, but so many great options. Was that the order you ranked them?

I think they changed the application process since last year. Those first three would only look at your application if you ranked them first. So putting more than one was a waste of your ranking spot... You could only pick one. it was about which one you wanted most, and then which other school (that didn't require you to rank them first) was your second choice. Such a stupid application method.

I loved Salk- great vibe and principal, kids felt nurtured and super smart. Floppinho and wife loved Baruch which as a huge school had a ton of opportunities and great music and theater (I liked it too). Ranked that first after touring professional performing arts school and really not liking the academics. He was very happily going to Baruch until the last day of school when we found out he got in to the special music school.

co-worker couple and their kids (really nice family) live in that brooklyn building that had the huge fire last night. :(

the look of panicked uncertainty on their faces this morning brings me right back to our own fire back in 2010. dammit- really sucks.

but seriously- for work? does she have a place set up to live yet? looking for advizes?

eta: given that the city has turned into a giant playground of the 20-something out of town sorority/frat bros... she'll maybe love it. or hate it. but she won't be alone in being young and new here.

So we’re moving out of the city. I’m devistated and excited. Three years ago I didn’t see this as possibility. I thought the NYC thread would be an ok place to air this #### the next couple of months while I deal with this. I’m buying a pastrami and Swiss at 3am tonight in protest.

We hope to move to Boise within the next 2 or 3 years. Heading there for the third time next Monday. Looking at some neighborhoods. Great little city. I'll miss NY but looking forward to the change of scenery. Lived in Queens my whole life...it's time.

Beacon. I’ll commute initially until I can find a new job. We’re keeping the house in Brooklyn and are going to rent it. The wife is done with the city and the boys need more nature.

Let ne know about your job and I’ll see what I can do.

Thanks. Hope I'm overreacting, but I've got a gnawing pit in my gut that says no. My former superior at fdbi is at Peter Marino now and has been trying to get me there...which I might have to do.

I think an old boss of mine lives in beacon now- sounds awesome. But as a gay guy, he knew nothing about schools when we last reconnected

How about IDLES?

Can you work remotely in Boise, or is there a market there?
I'll take a little hit leaving NY but I do most of my work from home. I have a studio downstairs with a dedicated booth. I'll have to figure out a good setup in Boise. We'll probably only have a condo there.

IDLES definite maybe.

I was :thisclose: to working at Peter Marino a year and a half ago.  They made an offer, I countered, then they pulled the first offer and told me to pound sand.  Peter is an interesting dude (and also in tons of legal trouble).

I'll pencil you in.

PMA... might not have to make the switch just yet (LPC might maybe hopefully have come through 4 months later), but might. sounds like a grind there- lots of turnover, but also lots of people who have been there for decades. my friend is a senior guy running a bunch of high-powered projects (famous euro athlete) almost all in europe... but he's only been there since Sept, so no idea if he'll stick. but he really likes it so far, even though he's painted an honest picture of some of the issues. not sure how/where I'd fit in, tbh... but it might be my best/last hope if my current place doesn't work out (and I've been considering the move regardless- some issues here too, although it's been good and upwards learning curve working with architects again instead of ID peeps).

also just got back from the Basquiat show in my hood at the Brand or something. wife got the free tickets months ago. very cool space (old con ed substation) and amazing to see all the work together. highly recommend if you can get the tickets.

but will always think of IDLES now, especially after walking the exhibit with 7yo budding artist floppinha who had some similar comments...

Did you see that painting what Basquiat done?
Looks like it was drawn by my four year old son

I love me some Basquiat not only b/c his work inspired me to paint again but its very approachable and gives novice artists hope.  But yeah, I totally get Lil Flop's critique.  What's sad to me is all the Basquiat clones that exist nowadays and they're grown adults.

I've walked by that con-ed substation on 6th betw A and 1st for years and always coveted it... best part, for me, was to get inside there. but I also dig basquiat's work and loved seeing it en masse like that. there was a couple who used to paint on the street in soho c2000... mercer or greene st, iirc... did similar "primitive" stuff, but less figural and in oils with pencil and other stuff scribbled on. we bought one of theirs and still love it- pretty much the only art I own that my daughter didn't do.

You New Yorkers may have heard about the pedestrian who was struck by the bicycle delivery man on 57th last week. She is one of my employees who was out to get lunch when this guy ran a red light. Though we’ve been optimistic about her recovery, she will not make it. Her family has decided to remove her from life support tomorrow. Was one of my toughest weeks as a boss and I’ve been through some tough circumstances dealing with some great human beings at the lowest points of their careers. I hope this is the lowest of mine.

Be careful out there all. The streets can be dangerous.

I'm really sorry to hear that.  Did they arrest the bike rider?  Unfortunately, the ones like Floppo who follow the rules are few and far between.  I've been hit by bike riders running reds and going the wrong way down a 1 way street, but thankfully never been injured that badly.  You, and her family and friends have my condolences.  I really hope the bike rider was caught and is going to jail.

The biker stayed with her until the paramedics arrived. He is a delivery man for an “app delivery service” who lives in a Brooklyn homeless shelter. He claims there was a problem with the brakes on his bike which he doesn’t own. He was sited for running the red light but now will likely be charged with vehicular manslaughter.
