NFL becoming a "Pansy game" (1 Viewer)

Polamalu speaks out

Troy Polamalu is usally soft-spoken off the field, hard-hitting on it. The recent rash of fines leveled at his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates have caused him to take a shot at the NFL, however.

The Steelers safety suggested Wednesday that the NFL is leveling fines for hits more for its own interest than that of the players.

"I think regarding the evolution of football, it's becoming more and more flag football, two-hand touch," Polamalu said. "We've really lost the essence of what real American football is about. I think it's probably all about money. They're not really concerned about safety."

The Steelers have asked the NFL to clarify why Hines Ward, one of the league's best-blocking wide receivers, was fined $15,000 the past two games for unnecessary roughness despite not being penalized.

Ward was fined $10,000 following the Steelers' 26-21 win at Jacksonville on Oct. 5, a week after drawing a $5,000 fine for a play in which he stepped over Baltimore cornerback Corey Ivy on Sept. 29. Ward did not draw a penalty on either play.

Also following the Jacksonville game, Steelers linebacker James Harrison was fined $20,000 for criticizing referee Brian Winter for calling a roughing-the-passer penalty against him. Two other Steelers also drew fines for that game, safety Ryan Clark $7,500 for unnecessary roughness -- a late hit -- and wide receiver Nate Washington $7,500 for taunting. Among the four players, the one-game fines totaled $45,000.

"It's starting to cost too much money to come to work for these guys," coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday.

Tomlin said he planned to call the NFL office about the Ward fines, and team chairman Dan Rooney wrote a letter questioning why Ward was fined.

"We want to be a team and he [Ward] wants to be a player who plays the game the way it's supposed to be played, the way our league wants it to be played," Tomlin said. "We respect that. But we need a little clarity in that situation."

Polamalu said that football's essence is being taken away with the NFL's heavy-handed penalties, saying football "just loses so much of its essence when it becomes like a pansy game."

Polamalu said that past NFL greats wouldn't be able to play the way that made them great in today's game.

"When you see guys like **** Butkus, the Ronnie Lotts, the Jack Tatums, these guys really went after people," Polamalu told reporters. "Now, they couldn't survive in this type of game. They wouldn't have enough money. They'd be paying fines all the time and they'd be suspended for a year after they do it two games in a row. It's kind of ridiculous."

The fines that are being handed out from the NFL are getting out of control at this point, it has to stop. How are the players supposed to go out and give it their all when they are afraid to lose a ton of $$$$ each week for tackles or blocks that were not even flagged? :tinfoilhat:

I'm just fine with the fines being handed out.
So you think it is fine to to hand out $10,000 fines to players for plays that were not flagged during a game?
two separate issues. do you really think the refs catch everything?
No, I don't, but why is the NFL not coming out and clairifying what the fines are for? This isn't just the Steelers I'm talking about, I'm talking about the whole league in general.

Did anyone see Mark Schlereth's rant about this on ESPN an hour or so ago? He sure did nail it and bring up some great points..........

The exact same types of hits that get fines and suspensions end up on a video called "Megahits" or something that you can buy at the NFL Gear web site for $19.99. Talk about hypocrisy.

They say they want to "protect" players but they have no problem making a profit off of it.

 Ya, they don't mind showing someone getting laid out on their commercials, but then they fine the guy 5-10 grand :jawdrop:

Of course it isn't the same game. Players in the past played for the love of the game, players today play for the love of money.

Ward has consistently been voted one of the NFL's dirtiest players, for years now, so the Steelers shouldn't be surprised at all when he gets fined for dirty tactics.

Should the NFL not have to come out and show what "dirty tactics" he is being fined for? They should want to show examples of the type of play they don't want in the game, no?

Leading with your helmet is dangerous and is not proper technique. I have no problem with players being fined for that.

I disagree. If he's being fined for actions that DIDN'T EVEN DRAW A PENATLY then this seems wrong to me.It's tackle football we're talking about here.......what exactly is the definition of "dirty" when a guy doesn;t draw a penalty during the same for unnecessary roughness but is later, when some suits are watching game film, getting a fine??I just don't get it........the refs don't call something and yet it STILL gets penalized after the fact??

I agree that it's about $$$ for the league rather than safety.

... but the NFL is faaaaaaaaaaaar from a "Pansy game". Though I'm okay with a player saying that. But as soon as someone like John Clayton tries to make that claim... then I have issues.

I wish more than anything in the world that Mark Schlereth would get a job in the league office or the player's association in some type of position where he has more of an influence on the game. He is a true champion of the game with a throwback mentality. Stink for Commish!!!!

Is there any proof that the hits that are on these videos aren't legal hits? Show me proof that these "Megahits" videos contain footage of hits that were fined or drew a penalty. Otherwise, it is just his opinion.

The worst part about these fines is it's also subjective.

For example, one of the roughing the passer penalties the defensive player put his hand on the QB's chest just after release and and pushed off. Flagged for roughing the passer. Another guy nails the QB as he was releasing the ball with a legal it in the rib area. Flagged roughing the passer.

Another game, QB clearly let go of the ball and still got ran into and no flag or no call.

My point is some refs let a little more go than others and if you end up with a "tight" ref it could cost you money.

We don't have proof that Ward is being penalized for something illegal. That was part of the point.

And many of these roughing penalties we're seeing defy logic. Many a game has been changed completely by a bumbling ref throwing a flag over a perfectly legal and, often times, not even vicious hit on a QB.

And where is it getting them? The star players are still getting hurt in droves. Brady's injury wasn't a late or vicious hit.

The NFL always seems to put some stupid rule in effect that practically ruins the game.

"In the grasp" was one of the all-time worst game-changing rules in the history of sports.

I agree with leading with the helmet but I'm not sure it's applicable in this case. This seems to be the problem with Hines is he does not know what he got fined for and for some reason the NFL has not or does not want to clarify. It's as if they just fined him for all around rough play but not for actually doing anything wrong.

Well, if he's being "penalized" for something LEGAL wouldn't that make it even more stupid??I think Schlereth's point is that they penalize any ticky tiacky hard hit in the game lately and still continue to promote big hits. Clean or not clean, legal or not legal, when you promote a video called "Megahits" and then fine so many hard hits you are sending conflicting messages.

I agree with is point. My response was more about proof of the hits comment. The league has not responded to why he is getting fined so what was illegal?

The Suggs roughing the passer on Collins and the Harrison roughing the passer on Garard where both terrible calls a few weeks ago. When it comes to the QB, it pretty much is two hand touch, unless your Big Ben, but that's another argument for another time.

That is just silly. Refs are going to miss some calls. It happens. So, if one player kicks another player in the groin, but does it to where the ref never saw it, but it is clearly caught on camera, the player in question shouldn't be fined because the ref missed it?

I was referring to the NFL video's. I was stating that Schlereth cannot say it is hypocrisy when he has no proof that the hits on these videos are illegal. The NFL is fining illegal hits. There is no hypocrisy if they are selling videos of legal hits.

This really isn't that hard...they're all wrong. The players are wrong for complaining about being fined for dirty hits, the NFL is wrong for making money off of it after penalizing said players...and Tomlin's comment about it costing the players too much money to come to work is absolutely ridiculous. Even as a Browns fan I liked Tomlin, don't turn into an idiot, please.

Ocho says different...Another receiver, Cincinnati's Chad Johnson, was astonished to learn that Ward had drawn such penalties the past two games."Unnecessary roughness? That doesn't make any sense. I am serious; that doesn't make any sense at all. Hines has always been probably the best darned blocker in the NFL. I don't understand where you get unnecessary roughness from. That is not even a rule."

When did CJ get credibility on anything. I doubt he even watched the play.

oops, i cliked on this thread thinking it would be a rant about Romo not playing with a broken pinkie

which i guess could have the same title and sub-title

I agree with Schlereth 100% on the hypocrisy. But this quote makes me

Please see my post above regarding the hypocrisy of it. There is no hypocrisy unless the NFL is marketing videos that contain illegal hits.

Hypocrisy and greed go hand in hand. If there is money to be made then hypocrisy will surely raise its ugly head.

:pickle: Okay, so that proves nothing.

Since we have all those videos of hard and sometimes illegal hits, and videos of guys spearing and leading with their helmet.. maybe the NFL should go back and retroactively fine all the players who they have evidence of. Some of thos hits in the 50's and 60's and 70's when the NFL gained popularity should be addressed. Better late than never. At least the ones who are still alive, we can grandfather out the guys who aren't with us anymore out of respect.

Tomlin is an idiot. One game last year, he spent more time adjusting his sunglasses than coaching his players

Since the NFL is obviously trying to make money off the players... id say its a pretty safe bet to assume troy is going to be paying for this.

Really??? Really???

I agree with a lot of what Polamalu said.

As for this:

NFL players are bigger, stronger, and faster than they've ever been, and deal out more punishment than they ever have. And guys at keyboards think they're pansies.

It wasn't a guy behind a keyboard who said it. It was Troy Polamalu! I think he has earned the right to say that.

Nobody called them pansies. Polamalu said that the fines they are handing out for every hard hit is going to turn the NFL into a league where nobody wants to hit anymore.

As a Steelers fan, my feelings of the fines, lately, can be summarized simply by this Tomlin quote:

Asked yesterday what Ward did in the Jacksonville game, Tomlin said, "He played football."

They are becoming a joke with the fines. One of the eagles players got fined twice for one play in a recent game. Facemask and a "late hit". The face mask would MAYBE have been a 5yd penalty, he never grabbed the mask, his hand just slide over it. The late hit, it was on a kick return and he was tackling the guy at the sideline and momentum took them out of bounds. He is right. It is becoming a joke, espeically when you are fined for plays that werent infractions in the game.

Not all players make 5000000 a year. When some are making 390-900k, then figure in taxes and such. Those fines add up.

Anybody that doesn't think the NFL is turning into a pansy game probably hasn't watched football for very long. I've watched it for 45 years. Believe me, it's a freakin' joke now days. I was in a restaurant the other day and they had a picture of the 1940's high school football team. A strip of leather over their heads. A little padding on the shoulders maybe. Australian rules football is rougher than our football and they wear shorts. If you want to be safe, don't play football!

They also used to do surgery with huge, reusable knives and without gloves. Oh, and people died from that too.
