NFL Postseason Merchandise Sales (1 Viewer)

Before you share your latest theory of how the NFL is fixing games, take a gander at the $$.

Here are the rough rankings by sales to date (with a % of total sales) for both Conference and Super Bowl:

1) Bears (58%)

2) Patriots (18%)

3) Colts (17%)

4) Saints (7%)

Note: These are from one category (team apparel), but should closely mirror sales from all categories.

I'll update thru the Bowl....

Way to handpick your stats to back up your story :goodposting:
I work with sports retailers every day, which gives me an understanding of where apparel fits in with hard lines, jerseys, and headwear. Unless there is a "terrible towel" type item for 1 team that skews things, the numbers will be close throughout all categories.Just trying to provide some info...now back to your regularly scheduled thread about Who the NFL Wants to Win.

Update for Conference and SB numbers so far:

Bears - 58%

Colts - 42%

The Colts are surprisingly good so far. Many thought the Bears would be 3-to-1.

A Colts win could possibly catch the great Steelers win last year.

A Bears win would surpass the Steelers.

:goodposting: Either way, the NFL makes boatloads of cash. What's your point?

Mostly just a conversation piece. But a $20 Million swing does mean something to the NFL. My original point was that these numbers may be considered if you are going to theorize which team the NFL wants to win.

Well, maybe I'm the only one, but :goodposting: for the info. I think this stuff is interesting.
I appreciate it, Surf. Not sure why some people react negatively to information that is real and can't be retrieved yet. It's pretty interesting behind the scenes to see the ebb and flow.I'll update you next week.

My final update before heading down to :ptts: with Snoop and Carmen....

Most numbers are in for SB Champ sales, and the Conference runs are over. However, a lot of replenishment will be going on thru next week, so the numbers will get bigger for one team.

As of today, the COLTS have made a charge:

BEARS - 56%

COLTS - 44%

The Midwest is still pro Bears.

The NE is still heavy Bears.

But in areas such as Florida, where we thought it would be 4-1 Bears, the Colts have had surprising support. Whether it's Dungy, Manning, Indiana natives, etc...the Colts fanbase is growing and almost achieved a split.

Either way now, it looks like (another) huge success for the NFL. This will probably be the biggest SB ever for them.

Interesting. I would have never guessed the Bears would have that kind of presence in the northeast.

Interesting stuff - it also might have some Demographic appeal. What's the prime age of those who buy football jerseys (and who have the income to do so). I would think that a huge chunk of that would be people who were kids during the "Super Bowl Shuffle" era, explaining some of the extra appeal the Bears have. Also, I would think that there are simply more Chicago folks that get out to other parts of the country than there would be from the Indianapolis area.

Are there any players with strong Florida ties? Looking at the rosters actually shows a heavy Gator-quotient on the Bears, so I guess that wouldn't explain it.

I'm curious how these numbers have tracked against the point spread in past years - are people buying Colts stuff cuz they think they'll win and wanna support a winner?

Quizguy - You're right in that there are simply more Chicago fans spread throughout the country. The FL numbers can be attributed to the appeal of ex-Buc coach Tony Dungy, and the high concentration of people from Indiana who have moved down.

Surfshop - I was a little unclear on that. The NE was heavy Bears, but it was a small portion of the overall number. So a better description would have been that the NE bought some Bears, and basically no Colts.

While some individual licensees were up from '06, the final SB numbers will be DOWN for the NFL from last year. And sell-thrus will not be good for a lot of retailers either. I would attribute it to the following:

- Lower number of retail locations (especially large Sporting Goods) in Indy than Pitt.

- Snow storms basically killed the Indy market right after the Bowl. (The Pittsburgh market lasted at least another two weeks following their win.)

- Lack of Indy team color items. The Royal is a tough color to source as compared to Bears navy or Pitt black.

But while the SB will be down, the overall Postseason was very strong with two good teams playing in the Bowl (instead of a Seattle). Yet another successful season for the league and it's licensees.

Just saw my first Indy cap in Next-to-No-Where, Maine.... wasn't the superbowl hat but a hat that some guy had probably waited 30 years to produce from some shelf. Made myself go say hi and talk to him for a bit...nice convo and pretty straight on football until he started to spout stuff about hating my team, oh well. I said I buy a beer for him during the next year's monday night match up of NE and the Colts.
