NFL viewership off 11% YOY (1 Viewer)

You're just inundated so much by the product (Thurs., Sun. all day, Mon.) that a normal person with a normal life can't watch it all......and once you realize that (depsite what the NFL tells  you) it isn't "must watch" TV....that, in turn, lessens the importance of the times that you can actually watch it.

It's a downward spiral that isn't helped by mediocre games.

Yep, the game was fun to watch. However the other 31 teams fan bases see their teams as having little chance against the current dynasty.
It's not college football. They all have a great chance to stop them. But they keep getting worked over.

i thought the game was at a good time.  i still felt like garbage today but not because it was on late.

they are lucky the pats came back cause that was on track to be the cap on one of the worst post seasons imaginable.  one good game.  dallas/gb.  pit/kc was ok.

cant beleive people are talking about last night being one of the best super bowls ever.  it was the best comeback ever.  but 3 qrts of the game was meh.

How the #### was that OT TD not reviewed.

Dude's knee was down.

With that said I'm sure they punch it in next play. But pretty sure when the TD was scored confetti guy fired off the canons and the refs were like f it we are not undoing all of the celebrations for the falcons who are too dumb to run the ball no more than 5 times with a 25 point lead.

Every scoring play is reviewed..it was good.  Would have been fun to see them line up for another play with confetti everywhere though.

10:30 too late?  Don't become an NBA or MLB fan then.  Heck, the college championship game went until after midnight.

Yeah I don't get that complaint at all. Football is the only sport where their championship game and playoffs end at reasonable times. Heck even the final four in basketball ends after 11pm.

I question whether the ball crossed the plane on the 2nd 2 pointer.

my god,  people. You spend your free time on a football msg board yet you cant bother staying up to 10:30 to watch the single biggest football game of the year ? What's wrong with you?

BAMTech Appoints Amazon Video Executive Michael Paull As CEO

BAMTech, the video streaming service owned by MLB Advanced Media, Disney and the National Hockey League, on Tuesday announced the hiring of longtime Amazon video executive Michael Paull as chief executive officer.

Paull comes on at a time when MLBAM president and CEO Bob Bowman takes a step back from the spinoff, which was valued at $3 billion, as it becomes an increasingly independent unit.

Bowman will remain on BAMTech’s board. Paull, who will start in March and report directly to the BAMTech board of directors, is credited with creating the Amazon Prime video service, Amazon.com’s counterpart to Netflix’s pay video streaming service.

“Michael is a talented and accomplished executive who shares our collective vision for BAMTech as it aggressively explores new means to acquire and distribute video content,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “We are confident Michael will deliver on the incredible potential and promise this venture has for building powerful viewing experiences for its clients and their customers.”

Paull will also work with Disney—which in three years can take a controlling stake in BAMTech—on the launch of a standalone ESPN service.

“The team at BAMTech has created a best in class Over-The-Top video streaming platform allowing them to develop innovative solutions for their customers,” Paull said in a news release. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with this highly accomplished team and want to thank Major League Baseball and The Walt Disney Company for this exciting opportunity.”

Viewership gonna drop again this year after the day the Pats had. Really feels like the day Bron joined Miami. Congrats on the SB 52 win to the Pats fans around here.

No, but I'm speaking from a preseason feel. Back then, like now, preseason, it very much (IMO) feels like the next 16 games and playoffs are just a formality. They are so over the top better than anyone else now. Ratings will go one of two ways. People will turn off for lack of parity/competition or people will tune in to hate and see them lose.

I didn't read the article but I'd imagine that a large portion of South Floridas population evacuating would probably explain some of that dropoff.

edit- on top of that- the displaced population in Houston and other parts of Texas probably didn't help much either

So who cares if it's up or down? Not my problem.
It may become your problem if the NFL decides that it needs to increase advertising or change broadcast methods.

Unless you don't watch the games, in which case why are you posting here?

Screwing over San Diego, Oakland and St. Louis probably didn't help either.

Keep dreaming. Never going to happen.

I feel really oddly disinterested. Quitting FF as of this year + hating the Pats, Goodell, all the stoppages, stupid penalties + Ezekiel Elliott clown show + Kaepernick clown show = having not much left to care about. Maybe I should start gambling.
Could FBGs.com perhaps interest you in DFS?

So, having just the local Bengals game (a fiasco) at 1, and only Green Bay/Seattle at 4 doesnt seem likely to reverse the viewership trend. (and definitely not in my individual case).

Either the local affiliates can't afford to carry the games, or the NFL thinks a whole lot more people are going to switch providers and fork up the extra for Sunday Ticket.

At this rate, FC Cincinnati will be buying Paul Brown Stadium from Hamilton County in 5 years.

The number of local games you get are all mandated by specific league/tv rules.

Can safely say my gambling degeneracy was the ONLY reason I watched today.  What a ####ty day of football.  College football >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>NFL.

College football is so much better of a product. It's not even close.

How so?  I mean if there were 60+ NFL games each weekend we'd probably see more good games.  The average margin of victory for the top 25 teams this weekend was around 24 points.

That's a pretty small sample size.

Generally I find college games to be wildly more exciting, interesting, colorful and passionate. I know the NFL players are way better, but it's a far inferior product. And I'm an NFL season ticket holder.

You probably like it better because your college team is a strong team.  Beyond their games, you have a bunch of teams to root against so you get a playoff spot.  You likely have access to 20+ at the minimum each weekend so you're bound to find something interesting and even a game impacts FSUs playoff status.

You're not wrong about that, but even on years when FSU is out of it, I am still compelled.

I was going to watch Falcons-Bears until I realized Sporting KC was on. Much more entertaining game.

Started to watch a couple of games but the agonizing slow pace with the ridiculous number of commercials just made it unbearable.  I'll stick with college unless the broncos are on.

I think part of it is that we as a general public are requiring more and constant stimulation.   While I do agree that the NFL product has devolved a bit for a variety of reasons (bad officiating for example)--I think that we are overlooking that we as a public has changed.  It takes far more to get our attention, and I wonder if we are being naive thinking that the game just "sucks" now while ignoring the dynamic that we and our expectations have also changed very much.

Fair point too.

I couldn't make it through a full game this weekend.  Play, watch replay of that play 3x while the next one is called, repeat a couple times, cut to commercial, kickoff, cut to commercial, etc...

While I get were you are coming from, I have to disagree. I've grown up with football, and I am far from being one of today's younger, short-attentioned spanned youths. The fact is that today's product has WAY more advertising time. Way more replay-induced delays, etc. It has added a good 30 minutes of dead time to the average game. Football was long enough to begin with. Now it is approaching insufferable.

The average college game is 3:24 minutes, 3:36 for the Big 12.  The NFL games are 3:06.  8 min of the 18 min difference can be accounted for by halftime length.

Great point....and this should be the main driver at getting the NFL on board with legalized gambling.

Spot on.

However......since we had no games on yesterday (Hurricane Irma) we watched Red Zone from 1-7:30 and it was fantastic. Without Red Zone.....the NFL would seriously be dead to me. The only game I will watch is my Dolphins......commercials we flip to Red Zone. I can’t stand what the game broadcast has evolved into with the insufferable replay delays on every TD and every turnover. All the momentum, spontaneous joy and rhythm of the game has been sucked away by the replay system. It’s god awful. And don’t get me started on the commercials......way out of hand.

Funny thing is College Football which can take even longer to watch over an NFL game (a big time game in primetime or at whenever) still has all the pageantry and excitement I remember. NCAA football is a vastly better product. Seeing the young kids (most whom will never be a pro) doing everything they can to just win the game......great stuff.

But Red Zone is pure $$$$$ and that is something that is simply a joy to watch.
