A little late, but I'm just think it's a sound strategy to put teams from your biggest tv markets on in London. I mean what better way to endear yourself to your new LA fans than to make them wake up at 6:30am to watch their team.

Pretty much. The flags have also really sapped the fun out of the game. You have to wait 30 seconds to celebrate just to see if some dip#### ref threw a flag for something 30 yards away from the play. Fun!Recap of the game last night:

I agree with this especially how over officiated the game is now. We have officials determining "football moves", "completing the catch" and a bunch of over technical bull #### where to the plain eye you know what is a catch and what isn't. Then with the terrible PI rule of getting all of the yards baiting PIs is as much of a play as a button hook.Recap of the game last night:

Looking for the stupid card they hold up for a picture of a giant fish hook to bait the CB to take a PI.
How slow baseball is has killed that game. Football needs to be very mindful of not repeating the same mistake.
They should incorporate ads into the coverage between plays. The tradeoff being less commercial breaks.
I can handle a McDonald's ad popping up on the bottom of the screen. Advertisers may like it because viewers are captive instead of perhaps fast-forwarding or changing the channel during commercial breaks.

wow, that is pretty interesting and really not a good sign. I guess Ben being out might have hurt a little bit, but that still seems like a game that should crush. No competition at all.

If these protests hurt viewership, then I'd guess the networks would spend less time covering it. I'd guess they wouldn't show players kneeling if they thought it was driving away customers.

You really want this to be true.. unfortunately (fortunately) you missed the mark (again). Thankfully, I don't have a lot to be unhappy about in this life so far.
Among the things I could ever be miserable/unhappy about, crappy qb play posts on a message board aren't one of them.

The elephant that no one wants to point out. The viewership drop started this year...it is not like there has been a steady drop in viewership. This large drop in viewership (and +10% drop is very large) coincides with athletes deciding to use this venue as a place to protest. And then the way the athletes decided to show their protest compounded the problem (national anthem). The game is supposed to be entertainment....I deal with politics and other issues all week. When I sit down to watch an NFL game, I do not want politics pushed into it. And it makes no difference whether I agree with the position or not, I want a break from the everyday issues of the world. (ie, those of you that think the BLM protests are fine ..... what if T Tebow would have done the same protest about all the unborn children killed legally in this country (abortion). I am certain he feels just as strongly that this country's position on this issue is extremely amoral and wrong. His protest would be to bring awareness to the issue and maybe save some unborn child's life).
I believe at the core of the issue is entertainment allows everyone an escape from these daily issues. If you want to shove an issue in my face, then don't be surprised when I change the channel. There are a lot of options out there and I know several moderate to serious older NFL fans that have not watched one game this season. And have told me to one degree or another they will not watch unless the NFL players stop the protest of the national anthem.

You would be better served using your energy to make someone else's world a better place, than worrying about what an athlete says or does - it has no impact on your life.

Why do you think commercial stores do not allow their employees to "voice their opinions about controversial subjects". Veterans - themselves, family, friends many of which find the protesting of the anthem extremely offensive...that makes up a large subgroup of our society. If only 15% decided to change the channel, it is a significant number.
Law Enforcement of one sort or another - the individual and all the closely associated people may not be real thrilled that they/their profession are protested at the beginning of each game.
Just these two groups of people are very large and would not take a large portion of them to decide this is not the entertainment they want to watch.

Thanks Sherlock, since your ability to read any of these articles is superior please point out where the protests are listed as the main reason. Look at the excuses: poor play, commercials, concussions, penalties, NFL over handedness, etc have been the same for the last few years. Only the protests are new for this year.

If Tim Tebow were to kneel during the national anthem as a protest against abortion, I would feel absolutely no different than I do now about Kaepernick. Which is to say that I watch football because, you know, I like football and don't give a #### what people are doing on the sidelines to protest whatever they want?

Well I do agree that a lot of these games are very poorly played. And may have a lot to do with more diehard fans not following the game as much. Much of this I think has been brought up previously...but the CBA massively reduced the time players are allowed to work with coaches and practice. As well as so few contact practices (tackling and offensive lines need live physical reps) are making the play beyond poo level at times. Way too many penalties, but there are two different issues at work IMO....1) the extensive judgement calls (PI, etc) and inconsistencies on how they are called is extremely frustrating, 2) the players making stupid penalties...I watched a game yesterday (don't remember which one) and there had to be 8 offside, false start or encroachment penalties in one half. It was complete lack of focus by the players. Or last year when the officials were to emphasize defensive holding by DBs grabbing the jersey. How hard is it to not grab the jersey...not sure but for a lot of DBs it was super difficult all year as they continuously would grab the WR jersey and complain when there was a flag.

The problem is that the NFL (both the League front office and individual teams too) gets so many things wrong and they are so slow to recognize their errors (if they recognize them at all). Through bad design, NFL games have become boring, so it's expected that viewership is falling off a cliff.
Examples of errors not addressed, off the top of my head:

- Allowing fat slobs like Chris Berman to "speculate" on the upcoming draft pick, totally ruining the moment where the pick is announced 30 seconds later. Got to the point where I loaded up on hate before tuning into the draft.
- Taking millions from the alcohol industry while doling out harsh penalties for using mary j.
- Goodell not having a well thought-out plan for passing judgement on players. Ray Rice, you are suspended for two games; no six; no, let's just say you are banned for life. Meanwhile the Mara family is comfortable doling out paychecks to Josh Brown.
- Thursday Night Football - hey players, put on some lipstick and get out there and shake your moneymakers.
- Phil Simms - wrong and awful in numerous ways
- Commercials - This is the number 1 reason the NFL star is fading. There are simply too many breaks in the action.
- Incompetent clock management by the coaches - I should let this go, but the fact that head coaches are soooo bad at clock management just angers me (okay, I'll breathe and let it go).
- NFL refs - The number 2 reason the NFL star is fading, more specifically the lack of HQ support the refs get during the game. I can be three hours deep into non-NFL beer and make a snap judgement in seconds based upon one or two views of the play, but it takes the NFL an eternity to come to the same conclusion.
- Ownership - It's understood that Goodell is paid to reflect the thoughts and wishes of the owners, so I won't pile on Goodell, except to ask, how the #### can $44,000,000 a year not buy you a guy with bare-minimum levels of public relations/salesmanship.
- NFLPA - weak, weak, weak. Their weakness seems to serve as a conduit for all of the bigger problems that permeate the NFL.
- Lack of online viewing options. Where once I first ponied-up for some convoluted Comcast TV package to get NFL games on my TV, I now negotiate with Comcast to get the cheapest internet connection that gives me the bandwidth I need to stream HD video. Last year, I had to sign up for a phone service I never used to get the best rate (bye-bye TV deals); and this year, I was able to shuck the phone for basic cable, but after three weeks and multiple "wrech" support calls, I still could not watch the NFL in my home* (and I had to reload my PC after some nefarious DSRM error message). ... * I have NFL on Verizon, so I'm not completely isolated, but if Verizon no longer came with the NFL, and Comcast continued to not meet expectations, I might quit the NFL for good.

HoF game cancellation hurt too. That's an important game to get the juices flowing. Rams Hard Knocks was worst one yet as well. Just a whole bunch of bad luck all at once. Can't afford that in an election year like this one.

But how? The problem is that many people are moving on. The NFL is so unbelievably out of touch that they wouldn't have a clue how to fix their product. They basically lucked into a fantasy football revolution, and they've done nothing to improve the game in a long time.
5 steps to fix the game:
1. Shave one 30 second commercial off of each stoppage.
2. Allow celebrations
3. Instant Replay is handled in 30 seconds by an offsite set of officials. It can't be that difficult. Use quick common sense and move on.
4. Get rid of extra points. You always go for two.
5. Change play clock from 40 seconds to 30 seconds. If that's too quick for the fatties, they need to lose some weight.
None of these are outlandish but they would speed up the game and make it more enjoyable.
