NFL viewership off 11% YOY (8 Viewers)

I think we also see a lot of the best, great athletes going into stud edge rusher positions now.

The NFL set up the rules to favor the pass and a generation of athletes has been brought up and trained to defeat them.

We've seen something similar on offense as the best athletes are more and more wide receivers. Look at Ty Montgomery and Randall Cobb, shocker guess what turns out they both are just fine at RB.
No, they're not

A little late, but I'm just think it's a sound strategy to put teams from your biggest tv markets on in London. I mean what better way to endear yourself to your new LA fans than to make them wake up at 6:30am to watch their team.

Then a solid 6-6 nightcap?

NFL action is fannnntastic!!

Recap of the game last night:

Al Michaels welcomes you to a raucous crowd, after the fans at home listened to Carrie Underwood sing one of the dumber songs to open a football game that sounds like it was penned by Vanilla Ice after a crack binge.  HERE WE GO!  Ball is kicked high and deep to a returner who will not return this ball or any ball kicked this night or any other night because the league set the kick-off rules to 'boring'.  We now go to 5 minutes of commercials.

ALRIGHT we are back live at University of Phoenix stadium (seriously?  your stadium is named after an online college?) and the Cards have the ball.  Deep pass to Larry Fitzgerald caught.  But hold on, there's a flag.  Holding.  1st and 20.  Yada yada yada.  Punt.  Commercial break.

BACK!  Seattle ball.  Hand-off, hand-off, missed pass, punt.  COMMERCIAL BREAK!

Cards ball.  Penalty before the snap.  Penalty after the snap.  More yellow here than a kids pool in August.  Halftime coming....HOORAY FOR EVERYTHING!  Commercial.

Penalty, punt, commercial, tie.

Pretty much. The flags have also really sapped the fun out of the game. You have to wait 30 seconds to celebrate just to see if some dip#### ref threw a flag for something 30 yards away from the play. Fun!

I don't buy the "crappy product" argument. All the people who say the product is crappy watch every minute of every game. If it was so crappy they would watch something else. The reason the ratings are down is a mix of people cutting the cable, the election, crappy primetime matchups to start the season, brady suspension (pats at cards that opening sunday night), manning retirement (denver in opener with no name qb), states shutting down dfs & national anthem protests.  There were two debates with 80+ million viewers during primetime nfl games. Sure, they could cut down on the commercials but that'll never happen. Personally, I loved last nights game. It was a defensive war out there. Sherman couldn't walk after the game. 2 of the top 3 defensive metric teams for the week. Crazy OT with missed kicks. Two stops right at the goal line before that. Blocked kicks. Bruce Arians. Pete Carroll. David Johnson. I loved it all. People just want to ##### and moan about everything and anything these days and it's nfl season so mine as well ##### about that. I'll be watching, eating, gambling, drinking and enjoying. Love the extra London game too.  Wish they'd have one every week. Go Houston +8.5 tonight. Go Deandre. Go Devante Booker 1st td +1500. Go 4-3 Hou and 8-3 Den for squares. Maybe Chinese, maybe pizza, will let you know. Go Sean Mcdonough. Go Makers. Think about what people are going through in places like Aleppo and in our country we whine about watching football on TV. Not this guy.  Not today.  Not ever.

I agree with this especially how over officiated the game is now. We have officials determining "football moves", "completing the catch" and a bunch of over technical bull #### where to the plain eye you know what is a catch and what isn't. Then with the terrible PI rule of getting all of the yards baiting PIs is as much of a play as a button hook.

Looking for the stupid card they hold up for a picture of a giant fish hook to bait the CB to take a PI.

How slow baseball is has killed that game. Football needs to be very mindful of not repeating the same mistake.

They should incorporate ads into the coverage between plays.  The tradeoff being less commercial breaks.

I can handle a McDonald's ad popping up on the bottom of the screen.  Advertisers may like it because viewers are captive instead of perhaps fast-forwarding or changing the channel during commercial breaks.

During a lot of auto races they go to commercial and leave the coverage in the corner.  Doing that during PAT's, kickoffs and perhaps instant replay situations is worth looking into.

Patriots/Steelers is lowest rated Week 7 national window (in the overnights) since at least 2006
wow, that is pretty interesting and really not a good sign.  I guess Ben being out might have hurt a little bit, but that still seems like a game that should crush.  No competition at all.

Red Zone channel takes away a lot of the complaints I'm reading. However, I'm thrilled when football is over so I can be more productive on Sunday's.

While the smartest minds in the nation dig deep into the American psyche for explanations on why 11 percent fewer of us are watching pro football, a couple of agencies in the business of gauging public opinion seem to agree that a huge reason for the NFL’s lost eyeballs is 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

A Rasmussen poll found 32 percent of the population is less likely to watch a game these days as a direct result of the Kaepernick-led, take-a-knee protests that have taken hold around the league. It’s the players’ way of protesting the shooting deaths of a number of African Americans by police officers in frantic incidents across the country the past couple of years.
If these protests hurt viewership, then I'd guess the networks would spend less time covering it. I'd guess they wouldn't show players kneeling if they thought it was driving away customers.

Man you are just a miserable unhappy guy any thread you post in.  I bet you blame others for all your problems too.
:lmao:

You really want this to be true.. unfortunately (fortunately) you missed the mark (again).  Thankfully, I don't have a lot to be unhappy about in this life so far.

Among the things I could ever be miserable/unhappy about, crappy qb play posts on a message board aren't one of them.

The elephant that no one wants to point out.  The viewership drop started this year...it is not like there has been a steady drop in viewership. This large drop in viewership (and +10% drop is very large) coincides with athletes deciding to use this venue as a place to protest.  And then the way the athletes decided to show their protest compounded the problem (national anthem). The game is supposed to be entertainment....I deal with politics and other issues all week.  When I sit down to watch an NFL game, I do not want politics pushed into it.  And it makes no difference whether I agree with the position or not, I want a break from the everyday issues of the world. (ie, those of you that think the BLM protests are fine ..... what if T Tebow would have done the same protest about all the unborn children killed legally in this country (abortion).  I am certain he feels just as strongly that this country's position on this issue is extremely amoral and wrong.  His protest would be to bring awareness to the issue and maybe save some unborn child's life).

I believe at the core of the issue is entertainment allows everyone an escape from these daily issues.  If you want to shove an issue in my face, then don't be surprised when I change the channel.  There are a lot of options out there and I know several moderate to serious older NFL fans that have not watched one game this season.  And have told me to one degree or another they will not watch unless the NFL players stop the protest of the national anthem.

Yeah, this is something nobody has pointed out yet.  Good job, Dane Cook.

I have not watched any games this year.

It has nothing to do with protests or politics.  I can tune those out - and quite frankly don't care one way or the other.  I don't care if everyone, anyone, or no-one is protesting.  If you are that worked up about whether a player is standing or sitting or kneeling, or pissing during the national anthem, I suggest that is a you problem.  You would be better served using your energy to make someone else's world a better place, than worrying about what an athlete says or does - it has no impact on your life.

I don't watch football because its just not a great product for me.  I grew up watching football nearly non-stop on Saturdays and Sundays.  Now, I just don't find it entertaining.  Its that simple.  Football has not changed... I have.

(See the bolded) I am not the issue, the offense taken by large groups of people are the issue.  Why do you think commercial stores do not allow their employees to "voice their opinions about controversial subjects".  It is not "pc" to say you do not approve with the BLM position, but think about how many people are one of the following sub groups:

Veterans - themselves, family, friends many of which find the protesting of the anthem extremely offensive...that makes up a large subgroup of our society.  If only 15% decided to change the channel, it is a significant number.

Law Enforcement of one sort or another - the individual and all the closely associated people may not be real thrilled that they/their profession are protested at the beginning of each game.

Just these two groups of people are very large and would not take a large portion of them to decide this is not the entertainment they want to watch.

Yeah, this is something nobody has pointed out yet.  Good job, Dane Cook.
Thanks Sherlock, since your ability to read any of these articles is superior please point out where the protests are listed as the main reason.  Look at the excuses: poor play, commercials, concussions, penalties, NFL over handedness, etc have been the same for the last few years.  Only the protests are new for this year.

If the product was fascinating, entertaining, and can't miss it like I would feel in the past the rating would be there.

It's not.  There are lots of excuses thrown out there, but bottom line its a crappy product.

Tonight's another scintillating matchup.

3-0.

Two overpowering defenses vs two mediocre QBs.

Holding calls kill offense getting 2 first downs.

A 3 and out... followed by a bank of commercials.... followed by an injured player still on the field... followed by a bank of commercials... followed by a FG.... followed by a bank of commercials...

If Tim Tebow were to kneel during the national anthem as a protest against abortion, I would feel absolutely no different than I do now about Kaepernick.  Which is to say that I watch football because, you know, I like football and don't give a #### what people are doing on the sidelines to protest whatever they want?

And oh yeah the Bears are due up for MNF next week, must be the third prime time game they have been in this year at least.

One quarter in, two great defenses, two teams feeling each other out, a couple of flags, a couple of punts...THE PRODUCT IS SUB PAR!! THE SPORT IS A MESS!! Good god, listen to yourselves. Turn it off and go catch some Pokiemans.

Well I do agree that a lot of these games are very poorly played. And may have a lot to do with more diehard fans not following the game as much.  Much of this I think has been brought up previously...but the CBA massively reduced the time players are allowed to work with coaches and practice.  As well as so few contact practices (tackling and offensive lines need live physical reps) are making the play beyond poo level at times.  Way too many penalties, but there are two different issues at work IMO....1) the extensive  judgement calls (PI, etc) and inconsistencies on how they are called is extremely frustrating, 2) the players making stupid penalties...I watched a game yesterday (don't remember which one) and there had to be 8 offside, false start or encroachment penalties in one half.  It was complete lack of focus by the players.  Or last year when the officials were to emphasize defensive holding by DBs grabbing the jersey.  How hard is it to not grab the jersey...not sure but for a lot of DBs it was super difficult all year as they continuously  would grab the WR jersey and complain when there was a flag.

Listening to Sean McDonough's soul leave his body as he rapidly read what is on the Big King burger was pretty good, I'll give you that.

You're not serious, are you?

(Just in case I'm not being trolled here, go to your favorite search engine and search for "NFL viewership Kaepernick" (without the quotes).  Or just read through the twenty other posts here that said exactly what you're saying.)

The problem is that the NFL (both the League front office and individual teams too) gets so many things wrong and they are so slow to recognize their errors (if they recognize them at all). Through bad design, NFL games have become boring, so it's expected that viewership is falling off a cliff.

Examples of errors not addressed, off the top of my head:

  1. Allowing fat slobs like Chris Berman to "speculate" on the upcoming draft pick, totally ruining the moment where the pick is announced 30 seconds later. Got to the point where I loaded up on hate before tuning into the draft.
  2. Taking millions from the alcohol industry while doling out harsh penalties for using mary j.
  3. Goodell not having a well thought-out plan for passing judgement on players. Ray Rice, you are suspended for two games; no six; no, let's just say you are banned for life. Meanwhile the Mara family is comfortable doling out paychecks to Josh Brown.
  4. Thursday Night Football - hey players, put on some lipstick and get out there and shake your moneymakers.
  5. Phil Simms - wrong and awful in numerous ways
  6. Commercials - This is the number 1 reason the NFL star is fading. There are simply too many breaks in the action.
  7. Incompetent clock management by the coaches - I should let this go, but the fact that head coaches are soooo bad at clock management just angers me (okay, I'll breathe and let it go).
  8. NFL refs - The number 2 reason the NFL star is fading, more specifically the lack of HQ support the refs get during the game. I can be three hours deep into non-NFL beer and make a snap judgement in seconds based upon one or two views of the play, but it takes the NFL an eternity to come to the same conclusion.
  9. Ownership - It's understood that Goodell is paid to reflect the thoughts and wishes of the owners, so I won't pile on Goodell, except to ask, how the #### can $44,000,000 a year not buy you a guy with bare-minimum levels of public relations/salesmanship.
  10. NFLPA - weak, weak, weak. Their weakness seems to serve as a conduit for all of the bigger problems that permeate the NFL.
  11. Lack of online viewing options. Where once I first ponied-up for some convoluted Comcast TV package to get NFL games on my TV, I now negotiate with Comcast to get the cheapest internet connection that gives me the bandwidth I need to stream HD video. Last year, I had to sign up for a phone service I never used to get the best rate (bye-bye TV deals); and this year, I was able to shuck the phone for basic cable, but after three weeks and multiple "wrech" support calls, I still could not watch the NFL in my home* (and I had to reload my PC after some nefarious DSRM error message). ... * I have NFL on Verizon, so I'm not completely isolated, but if Verizon no longer came with the NFL, and Comcast continued to not meet expectations, I might quit the NFL for good.

I've never seen a QB with 2.5 yards per attempt. That is amazing. They should be advertising that for his next start, get everybody to watch.

The next prime-time game on the NFL calendar being pimped ad nauseum is...Jags/Titans. And we then give the international audience the treat of Skins/Bengals. One good team in the bunch, but lots of commercials.

Install Kodi and sportsdevil and stream away.

People like interesting characters and villains. Johnny Football not working out, Bob G going down again, Beast Mode hanging them up, all those losses have an effect. If Dallas doesn't draft Dak they may have lost twice as much.

HoF game cancellation hurt too. That's an important game to get the juices flowing.  Rams Hard Knocks was worst one yet as well. Just a whole bunch of bad luck all at once. Can't afford that in an election year like this one.

They need let these guys do celebrations like they used to. Remember when Terrell Owens got that TD and pulled out a sharpie and signed the ball? Or the time he celebrated on the star? Don't see how it would hurt to let them do fun stuff like that again. Good stuff to talk about at the water cooler. What do we talk about now?

It would be great if they did this, but they won't... this would be in addition to, not instead of commercial breaks.

Oh yeah. Now you are talking

Antonio Brown's pelvic thrusts and ### shakings are not enough. Let these guys pull a line judge's pants down after a touchdown or bring a Hula Hoop on to the field and ratings will soar!

We need more rassling type stuff in football. I want parrots, I want snakes. Maybe get some wacky lineman to bite on penalty flags for laughs.

The NFL needs to take drastic steps to alter their product in this new world.

But how?  The problem is that many people are moving on.  The NFL is so unbelievably out of touch that they wouldn't have a clue how to fix their product.  They basically lucked into a fantasy football revolution, and they've done nothing to improve the game in a long time.

5 steps to fix the game:

1. Shave one 30 second commercial off of each  stoppage.

2.  Allow celebrations

3.  Instant Replay is handled in 30 seconds by an offsite set of officials.  It can't be that difficult.  Use quick common sense and move on.

4. Get rid of extra points.  You always go for two.

5.  Change play clock from 40 seconds to 30 seconds. If that's too quick for the fatties, they need to lose some weight.

None of these are outlandish but they would speed up the game and make it more enjoyable.
