NFL viewership off 11% YOY (1 Viewer)

With me, refs are getting worse and affecting far too many games.

I still plan on watching every week, but if something comes up that's going to cause me to miss a game I'm not bummed out or anything.

Every person that I have seen attempt to defend a boycott misrepresents the debate.

They have to.. they can't attack the players for peacefully protesting inequality and police brutality, so they misrepresent it as an attack on our military and country on the whole.

Trump holds tremendous sway over a certain % of white men in this county.  The ratings are down almost exclusively due to white men.  If he told these dudes to watch next year ratings would go back up.  We may not like the amount of influence he has but to deny it is disingenuous.

I think it's disrespectful to kneel during the anthem. And I know that is not their intent. However I also respect their right to do so just like I also respect peoples right to boycott without calling them stupid. Me? I just wanna watch football.

You didn't but Cappella seemed to make that assertion. I didn't see the word "some". 

Also, the original quote for Kaep about the protest was this tho: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color."

I don't think you have to bring the military into it because that in itself is offensive to me and a lot of other people. And when it comes down to it, I don't think many people want politics of any kind during football games. Least of all during the anthem.

I thought the NFL was blatantly pandering to the pro-military crowd last night.

I was offended, so I stopped watching at half-time.

Should a person be proud of a country he feels is oppressing people?  Should a person stand regardless if they feel they have been left behind, mistreated or looked down on as second class citizen?  Why can't these people want something more from their country.

I think some of us get patriotism and nationalism mixed up a bit.

 
Politics are a huge reason why viewership is down. There is no doubt that it is the #1 reason. There are other factors but easily the #1 reason is the heavy dose of politics that really angered a lot of people and a significant number of those people decided to not watch because of it. Anyone who says otherwise has another agenda driving their discourse on the subject.

I don't think you should protest the flag because things aren't perfect. Obviously, that is my opinion. But honestly, I'm less upset with dopes like Kaep than I am with the owners and Goodell who have allowed Sunday's to be hijacked by politics.

If people don't want politics involved then get rid of the anthem before games.  Stop having military events.  No longer have champions go to the White House.  Keep all politicians away from games and don't allow then to comment on games.  I'm sure there are even more things.

You either have to rid sports of all politics or do nothing.  Politics have been a part of sports, music and all forms of entertainment forever.  It's almost impossible to keep politics out of anything.

I don't think it's a great way of doing it either but they thought it was.  I agree that the NFL didn't handle it in the best way but they were in a very tough situation.

I don’t agree that politics is the main reason. Politics were not a thing in the NFL 1+ year ago. The trend is just continuing on as it has for a long time now. I think it’s mostly:

Younger men just don’t really care about football as much as they used to.

There are more entertainment options now. This covers all ages. Hell, I would rather watch The Punisher on Netflix than any game outside of my home team in the playoffs. Or play Fortnite. Or do something with my kids.

The anthem is not political. It is our national anthem.

The military is not political. It is our country's military full of men and women who serve the rest of the country by putting their lives on the line and sacrificing much even when they do not sacrifice their lives.

You're telling me that you can talk about the flag or military without any politics getting involved?  Why are people boycotting the NFL because of politics getting involved if the flag and military have nothing to do with politics?  Why is Trump using it towards his own agenda?  It's all politicized.

They, by themselves, are not political. It is only political when someone makes it political.

It has been the accepted normal level of decency to stand for the anthem for as long as I have been alive. I remember the very first baseball game I went to as a kid at Dodger stadium and they play the anthem. Everyone stood up. I don't know the long history of it all but it has never been political to have the anthem play at a sports game and that everyone stands in respect for the nation and by extension our military.

It has only been the last couple of years that it has become "political". Why? Because some schmoe millionaire decided he would kneel and when asked why he said it was "blah blah politics blah blah" and then that caused a bunch of people to get angry and in response more schmoe millionaires did the same in solidary with the first schmoe millionaires which really pissed those people off more. Now you have people on one side who are always inclined to poo on things like national pride and our military standing up saying it is about free speech (while they simultaneously attempt to squash free speech as much as they can when they don't like it) and then you have a lot of people who take things like national pride and respect for our military upset. They in turn say you want to boycott the anthem and poo on my deeply held feelings of respect? Well, Mr schmoe millionaire, I will not support you or the organization that pays you those millions. And NOW it is political.

There ARE other reasons for decline in viewership but there is no doubt that this is the driving number one reason for the sharp decline.

I think if you really liked football, you would not let a few guys you don't agree with make you not watch the games on TV. But then again, maybe you don't like the game at its highest level as much as you think you do.

That's what I thought too.  All you have to do to avoid the politics is stay away from Sportscenter and start watching the game 10mins late and enjoy the sport.

This is more or less where I'm coming from.  I can tune out the politics (although having that forced on my Sunday is kind of annoying).  The bigger issue is that the product on the field just isn't that good, and there's more stuff that competes for my leisure time.  I haven't watched a non-Bills night game in years, and I often don't bother to watch the 4:00 games either.  My NFL viewing is mostly the Bills and a smattering of other games.

Also,  all the appalling things that the nfl players have done in their spare time and that didn't decrease the love of the sport, but kneeling down was the last straw?

Different people have different priorities and values.

Some people will frequent local businesses because they want to support their community with their money... some people will shop at Wal-Mart because they want to save an extra few dollars.... some people don't think much about it either way and just go where it is easiest for them.

Some people will spend time to get every last ounce of savings before buying something. Some people will just buy what they want without caring about the cost.

Some people send their kids to public school because it is free or they don't have an option. Some choose to spend money to have them go to a private school because they find value in that.

Some people buy their vehicle based on researching things like reliability and safety. Some because they like the brand. Some because it's the best used car they can find for the money. Some because it is the fastest car that looks cool with the money they want to spend.

The point is that people feel differently about the subject to begin with. And those who fall on one side of the fence may act or not act upon how they feel about it. But just because people can and do think and act differently doesn't mean it is not happening. :shrug:

I don't think its accurate to say the players are "protesting." The stated goal was to raise awareness about an issue, to shine a light on it, not to protest anything.

As I understand it, the issue is a drop in television viewers, not people attending games. I went to a couple NFL games this year and have no idea who stood or who didn't, because I could not care less about that. The majority of the noise on this issue is coming from people who are upset about the kneeling, people who seem desperate to make this about politics and football when it doesn't have to be.

As for television viewers, I rarely even see the national anthem, typically because I usually watch the games on delay, and start with the action. I don't see anything political in the games I watch.  I don't believe your comment about politics being the #1 driver of this drop in viewership.  For me, the problem is that the games are way too long, commercials are way too many, the games don't interest me as much anymore, and there's too much competition for my limited weekend free time.

I still watch almost every Packer game. Did not watch a single non-Packer game during the regular season - not one minute. I watched some of the playoff games. I enjoyed the AFC Championship game and the SuperBowl - both were great games imo.

 
To take this thread in a non political direction, has anyone else noticed the slow but steady narrative change of the NFL over the past 20 years where a game that featured horrendous coverage, tackling and lack of pressure on the QB was considered a great game because the offenses moved the ball at will like in Arena?

I sometimes miss the defensive side of the sport being integral to the game being considered "great".
