NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (1 Viewer)

Dougie's pulling a McGwire: "I don't really want to talk about the past too much. I enjoyed my time in Boston."

Which is fine ... but it doesn't really do much to put the story to rest.
He's taking the high road.
And that's admirable. But when you are asked point-blank, "Did you ask out of Boston." and you give a no comment, that doesn't look particular good.

Granted, he's in a tough spot there.

@reporterchris: Brandon Saad was an obvious candidate for a big offer sheet tomorrow. You'd have to think the #CBJ are confident they can get him signed.

Report is that Hamilton got 6 years, approx. $34.5 million.

Last report I heard was the Bruins were offering 6 years, $32 million.

Hamilton pretty clearly wanted out of Boston, not the other way around. Still didn't get nearly enough value in the trade though.
"Clearly wanted out" would be reflected by taking less from another team.
Not if the reports are true that he initially asked for as much as $7.5M from the Bruins.

I'm sure Sweeney would have figured out a way to make the extra $250K work if it came down to that. But this reminds people of the way Kessel essentially "demaned" his way out of town.

However, also begs the question of why players like Kessel and Hamilton are looking to get out of dodge after their ELC is up.
Maybe Claude Julien sucks at coaching young players?

I thought Chicago fans were just resigned to him leaving?
no way.

everybody assumed they would get rid of other guys like Sharp to make room to keep him. stupid to let a young stud like that go when you are relying pretty heavily on old wingers like Hossa and Sharp in your top-6.

I think the mindset was that if they could unload Sharp, or Sharp/Bickell, they'd be able to keep him.

Between the price tag, and rumors of him banging a teammate's wife, the market for Sharp was dead.

Saad is 22 and hasn't earned a 6yr $6.5mm contract IMO. Yes, one of the best up and comers, but he was playing with Toews and Hossa for much of the year.

good luck finding his replacement.

Pittsburgh has been hunting wingers for years. They aren't easy to find.

I don't know what it would have cost to keep him, but I'd rather have him at $6MM/year than Bickell at $4MM or Sharp at $5.9MM.

I agree but apparently there aren't any takers for BB or PS. Stan had to do something. Word is he was getting an offer sheet tomorrow.

Craig Custance@CraigCustance
Stan Bowman on Saad: "I don’t think we ever came close on a contract. It wasn’t from a lack of effort."

The Hawks couldn't afford Saad. He wanted the highest offer, plain and simple. For it to work, Saad needed to give the Hawks a discount.

I find that hard to believe unless the asking price in return is unreasonable.

Everybody knew Chicago was going to have some hard decisions to make, but this one is going to hurt I think.

It's tough tough tough loss as a fan but IMO this comes down to keeping Seabrook next year.

It sure will but we'll see if he's worth it next year. I think he'll wind up being worth it, but Hawks have more needs at C than at W and Seabrook is looming next year is more important to the Hawks. Pretty f'ing stunned right now though. This sucks and I'm pissed.

Pretty sweet deal for Columbus. Anisimov is a decent center who fills a need. Morin and Tropp are solid depth guys. Dano might wind up being pretty good.

Still, Saad has star potential even when you take him away from Chicago imo. I think Paliotta is going to be a solid 2nd pairing defenseman too.

Ducks get Bieksa for 2016 2nd round pick

wow.
what are your thoughts on this one?
he has 1 year left on his deal and his best years are behind him, but I like him. much better than Stoner anyway.
I know he's always been a pain in the ### to play against. Him and Hagelin might be what we need to get over the hump.

Can't believe the Hawks traded Saad. He's one of those guys that's a lot better in the playoffs than the regular season.

So was Bickel, I thought.

Yeah feels like Stan got fleeced here :kicksrock:

I'm sorry ... is this the way I'm supposed to react to another team making a difficult trade?

Agent Lewis Gross says there is no contract agreement in place at this point between Brandon Saad and the Jackets.
I'm wondering if Chicago thought an offer sheet was imminent and they couldn't afford to match it. So, rather than take a package of picks, they dealt him for this deal that gets them NHL bodies on entry level contracts they can fill out their lineup with.

However, might Columbus consider not matching a potential offer sheet to take the draft picks themselves? Probably not since they seem eager to get back to the playoffs, but they might have a tough decision to make if someone comes in with a huge offer.
