NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (2 Viewers)

What a mess. I know it's unlikely, but what happens if he gets signed and then then arbitration finds that LA was wrong in terminating his contract.

Bill Daly says Mike Richards is indeed a UFA. He wasn't on the list because his contract was terminated; buyouts weren't on it either.
I assume they'd be on the hook for a buyout of some sort. So, they'd owe him money but he'd still be free to sign elsewhere.

2008 first-round draft pick Viktor Tikhonov, returning to NHL after four seasons in Russia, is closing in on a deal with CHI.

Who's this? Did the Hawks draft him?
Tikhonov, who was the Coyotes' second pick in the 2008 NHL draft and has been playing in Russia, has indicated he would like to return to the NHL. The Coyotes hold his rights until July 1 when he would become a free agent.

Tikhonov has eight goals and 24 points in 45 games this season in the KHL and has not played in North America since 2010-11 when he spent the season with AHL San Antonio. Tikhonov's agent reports he is significantly bigger than he was when he was with Arizona. The 26-year-old could test free agency rather than return to the Coyotes.

@TSNAaronWard: Hearing #Oilers and Andrej Sekera is a 6 year deal at $5.5M per #TSN

Bit too high for me but not by a lot.

SportsNet talking that Sekera to the Oilers is likely a done deal. Great pickup for them if so.
Some locals were pushing for Green or Beauchemin, but I was hoping for Sekera or Franson. Aaron Ward also saying the Oilers are close to signing Mark Letestu to a 3 yr deal.

Looks like the RFA offer sheet compensation scale we were referencing yesterday is a little bit outdated:

$1,205,377 to $1,826,328 = third

$1,826,328 to $3,652,659 = second

$3,652,659 to $5,478,986 = first and third

$5,478,986 to $7,305,316 = first, second and third

$7,305,316 to $9,131,645 = two firsts, second and third

$9,131,645 or more = four firsts

Not sure MacLean watched much of Sekera. Was always the most underrated Sabres defenseman and often took on the toughest assignments. Great possession guy who can get the puck out of his zone very well.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: CGY on verge of getting Michael Frolik signed on a long term deal.

Uh oh. He might cost them.

The Oilers additions on D of Sekera, Gryba and Reinhart gets them closer to an NHL caliber D than they've had in a long time.

Now they just need to buyout Nikitin. They already had Fayne, Klefbom, Ference and Schultz.

$5.5M for 6 yrs. seems like a bit of an overpay for Sekera, but I guess the Oil have the cap space to do it and they won't be worried about any of their big names being up for new deals for a while.

Waiting until July 1st to address your team's biggest need usually results in an overpay. I think it is about 500,000 too much per year and about a year too long, but that's what happens when you wait too long. I'm just glad they didn't overpay for Green.

35 yr old Beauch to Avs for 3yr-13.5 mil. Not a good signing IMO

Bieska with 2.5 salary this year, 4.6 cap hit and just signed extension for 2yr-8mil.

I like this trade off.
