NHL Season Thread: TB wins and Kucherov loves beer (5 Viewers)

@FriedgeHNIC: In addition, on NHL's COVID-related absence list: WASH has a "TBA" next to it. NYI's Josh Bailey added today.

@reporterchris: In addition to the #caps $100,000 fine, the team has added Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin and Ilya Samsonov to the NHL's COVID Protocol list.

Flyers down to 16 skaters after 2 periods. Phil Myers and Morgan Frost have both left the game. Frost was in for the injured Couturier.
<Sigh> Suboptimal.

Weird part is that all three injuries (including Coots) look like fluke injuries on routine hits. There was nothing dirty or unusual about any of them.

@NHLFlyers: Injury updates:

Morgan Frost suffered a dislocated left shoulder and is out indefinitely. He has been placed on IR. We will provide further details about his return to play timeline in the near future.

Philippe Myers suffered a fractured rib and is considered week-to-week.

Bowen Byram debut tonight.

Ville Heinola in the Jets lineup on top pair as well.

Both are 19 year old 2019 first rounders and were the two defencemen on the WJC all tournament team.

Byram has the bigger hype and (likely) future but I'm curious to see what Heinola does, since I think he'll see more ice time (Avs are dressing 7 D).

Devils goalie on Covid list

@reporterchris: Mackenzie Blackwood (NJ), Sam Gagner (DET) and Jon Merrill (DET) have been added to the NHL's COVID Protocol list.

Saw her start as a student reporter covering the Rutgers football team and doing coach/player interviews for those weekly highlight shows. Knew right away she had what it took to make it.
I haven't heard a word she's said....

Apparently Dubois played 3:55 in the first for 'Lumbus then Torts benched him the rest of the game

Any chance Strome, TDA, Kravstov, a D prospect (pick one besides Lunkvist) and a 1st rounder gets PLD to the Rangers?

@DarrenDreger: My sense from canvassing sources tonight, Columbus is closing in on a trade involving Pierre Luc Dubois. It’s a complicated process that could be resolved as early as tomorrow. Teams have been told they’re out. Hard to say who’s in, but it’s believed Winnipeg is among them.

I think I would rather my deal with Kravstov and a D prospect and a 1st. I dont see Laine resigning in Lumbus

interesting point that if WPG and CBJ agreed to a trade, the players would have to quarantine after crossing border.

So both teams would be minus player or players would have to sit out week(I think?)

@PierreVLeBrun: The Montreal Canadiens also remain in the mix on Pierre-Luc Dubois. Winnipeg, Anaheim, Montreal it would appear at this juncture.

If the rumors about Laine plus Roslovic to CBJ are true, that seems like a gross overpay unless other picks/players going back to WPG.

I read a tweet last night with trade specifics between Peg and Lumbus. Guess that was a fake since nothing has happened. Weird

@frank_seravalli: Believe #nhljets are retaining 26% of Patrik Laine’s salary for this season, which evens out cap hits between Laine and Dubois. So no added salary for #CBJ other than new Roslovic deal.

Of course, Dubois has next year on his contract. Laine does not.

@charlieo_conn: I question the Laine fit in Columbus, but I get why CBJ did it. I assume this was the way to get maximum raw value back for a guy who wanted out; take back another guy whose value on the market was diminished a bit because everyone knew he wanted out.

At least Roslovic is already in the States. Laine / PLD will need to quarantine for a week once they cross the border

PLD with Ehlers seems like a strong 2nd line. Blue Jackets did ok I think but Laine seems pretty one-dimensional. Might have to flip him somewhere else to make this work best for them.

Well, if any of PLD's motivation for this was to get out of a perceived small market/"not much going on here for a 22 year old" town, then...not well played.

yeah.  notice Roslovic signed 2 year deal as part of trade.  Laine no extension.

only thing WPG has going for it is PLD father is coaching up there  (Manitoba Moose)

I was curious if this was the highest two draft picks ever to be traded for one another ... from any draft, never mind actually picked back-to-back the same year.

It turns out, the very first two draft picks in NHL history in 1963 -- Gerry Monahan (Canadiens) and Peter Mahovlich (Red Wings) -- were swapped in 1969. Crazy.

Next closest I can think of is Mike Ricci (No. 4) being part of the trade for Lindros (No. 1).

it wasn’t so long ago the Jets could barely find enough guys to take a draw.  like a few months ago in the playoffs.  then they bring Stastny back and grab Dubois and suddenly they look great down the middle.

meanwhile the Wild dress Bonino as their #1 center and Rask has a regular role.

what a world.  get well soon, Rossi.

Bryan Berard and Wade Redden were traded for each other. 1st two picks from 1995.

Is Jonas Brodin the best defensive defenceman in the NHL?  Trying to think who else is at his level. Jaccob Slavin is my other nominee.

These guys played for Peterborough (where I live) and Oshawa in junior. One of the most storied and intense rivalries in junior hockey. There was manufactured hype when these guys played against each other but I think everyone knew Lindros was the better pro prospect.

The tables turned for the 2003 draft when again the two teams had top prospects who went #2 and #3 overall in the NHL draft. But there was very little question imo that the Petes' Eric Staal was going to be a better pro than Generals' Nathan Horton.

We kind of took another spin at it in 2008 with the Generals Michael Del Zotto and the Petes Zach Bogosian but their pro careers have had major ups and downs with Bogosian not meeting the expectations I and most people had for him and as a result actually having close to a parallel career to MDZ, including brief periods of dominance and times they looked like they'd be out of the league for both.

another nice win for my Devils tonight   - looked unsteady early (gave up 6 shots on a NYI powerplay in the first).  Late in the first scored on the powerplay and then another quick goal and basically controlled the game from there.  Nice shutout for Wedgewood.  Hughes continues his hot start as does Ty Smith who now has a point in his first 5 NHL games

Devils now 1.875 points ahead of where they need to be (for playoffs) in my estimation based on who they've played and how they've done.
