whoa, this is actually something

FWIW I think Mantha will be a lot better in Washington than he was in Detroit but yeah that's a lot.  Mantha's timeline didn't really line up with Detroit's rebuild and had been a little disappointing.
I agree...I think the 2nd rounder was probably just to get Detroit to take Panik's salary off the Cap's books.  I'm not sure I agree with the 1st as well...but I honestly need to do some research on Mantha.  I don't know a ton.  I'm sad to see Vrana go, but he's been a big disappointment this year.  Even last night vs. Boston where everybody was clicking on offense, he looked lost.

Amazing goal scorer in the Q, didn't always translate in the AHL or NHL.  At times seemed disinterested, could be just the weight of losing so much.  He's definitely got an elite shot and can drive offense when he's motivated.

:sadbanana:

@charlieo_conn: Fletcher gives a flat "no" when asked if he's considering changes to the coaching staff as an attempt to change the team's makeup.

Hoping it's a case of a top talent repressed by a bad team and that moving to DC will open him up even more - kind of what folks are expecting from Hall in Boston.

@DarrenDreger: NYR were willing to mutually terminate Tony DeAngelo’s contract to allow him to pass through waivers and sign as a free agent. Montreal believed to very interested as early as this weekend. However, DeAngelo opted not to accept. He will be bought out of his contract this summer.

I like that wording with "were willing". It would have saved the Rangers a relative ton of money over a buyout. Dreger probably could've used a bit of a stronger word.

that's the full package?  jesus.  when I heard picks I figured one was going each way.  I don't understand why Washington hates Vrana so much.  what a haul.

Mantha should be pretty good, he was on pace for a huge year last year before he got hurt.  not sure why he's been so disappointing this season but not exactly the best circumstances around him.  he's basically Laine light.

Are people there getting anxious?
No, most everyone realized it was going to be a long rebuild.  Most all fans trust Yzerman and are willing to give him plenty of time.  The biggest frustration I've seen is more around Blashill, but while I don't know that he's a Stanley Cup caliber coach he's fine for where the Wings are right now.

Yea I would think he has a full 4-5 years. He’ll get it right.

Rangers fans, enjoy Zac Jones. Word I was hearing last week out of Pittsburgh was that he was coming back for his junior year, but I guess winning the title changed that.

Either way, he’s ready and I think you’re going to like what he brings (think Grzelcyk in terms of style and skill set). Great kid, as well.

As a Caps fan, I hated this trade when I first read about it...but after a few hours for it to sink in, I'm OK with it.  I've read several articles on the logic - It's all driven by our cap situation with the flat salary cap.

1) The 2nd was effectively compensation to take Panik's bum contract off our books.  GMBM has done this before - We sent Orpik and Grubauer to Colorado for a 2nd after the cup run.  Basically, a large part of what we got for Grubauer was getting Orpik's cap hit off our books - then we just signed him back after Colorado bought him out.

2) Vrana is a restricted FA at the end of the year.  He's put up some pretty good numbers - even including this year, but certainly when you take the full body of work.  He'd be due a raise.  If we ended up in arbitration with him, it'd be safe to say he'd get paid more than what he's making now...and I think everyone knows that.  When you have no cap room, that means you have to lose somebody else.  So...I think it's possible either he wouldn't be with the team next year anyway, OR having to pay his arbitration salary would mean we couldn't re-sign some other key pieces.  Enter this trade - You trade Vrana (who, if you assume is on the way out and too costly to keep next year anyway - and is underperforming and a bad system fit - isn't much of a cost) and a 1st for Mantha.  Trading a 1st for a mid-career top-6 forward with a few more years on a reasonable deal when you're in cap-crunch mode near the end of your cup window doesn't feel as bad.

The alternative is keep Vrana, probably either lose him next year for nothing, OR you have no cap space what so ever to re-sign Ovi or Samsonov or some other key piece.  People always want to "keep the old band together," but you can't do that when you have no cap room and guys want more $$.  It's just not a valid option to just keep them all.

so Tampa mayyyyyyyybe should have considered a backup goaler deadline option.  I’m sure they could have moved Marc Savard to LTIR to make it work or something

Wonder if there’s ever been a bigger gulf between two goalies on the same team.

They were rumored to be looking at Ullmark, turns out that they should have made that move.

I think your logic is a bit flawed in that I don't think Vrana is going to cost more than Mantha currently does, but I could be wrong there.  But great start for Mantha last night, I think he'll be more motivated in D.C. so I don't think fans will be unhappy with him.

Meh, Mac is probably only going to play twice more for them this year (and ever). A few wins is not worth whatever the cost would be for a better backup. Especially when the playoffs are assured.

They’ll have a hard time ever getting a decent backup goalie here because Vasy plays so much.

I suppose you’re right, still, it would be good to have a guy who can actually stop the puck if the worst happens and Vasy misses games with injury.

Certainly can't argue with your last point - he looked great last night.

I might be drunk, or without pants, or both (or neither) right now.

But likely all of the above to come soon.

If anyone knew what we went through as UMass hockey fans since the team returned in 1993, you literally would not believe how we are feeling right now.

National champions.

WOW!
Noticed this over the weekend too and thought of you. Congrats man!

Igor with back to back shutouts on the NJD.    Ruff  challenges an offsides to disallow Kravtsov's first NHL goal in the 3rd with the Rangers up 4-0.     Panarin with 3 points.   Devils don't look good at all.

@BroadStHockey: It is both thoroughly unbelievable and completely, utterly believable that that is the Flyers' first shootout win over the Penguins *in franchise history*.

So Vasilevskiy put the team on his back, even earning an assist(and probably should have had another on the OT winner), but the other big story is that Ross Colton has done it again. The rookie is tearing it up!
