Nick Barnett (1 Viewer)

Jene: what are your thoughts on Barnett going forward? Does he have a chance of being a starter somewhere and being an LB2?
There's a chance. But the LB market may be crowded in free agency. If he's signed early by a team with a need, it'll suggest the injuries are behind him and he was a priority target. It'll take an every-down role as an ILB and him showing that he's in form before I put him in my top 20.

Barnett has to get an every down role to have value for fantasy. He has been a tackling maching for years but turnovers and sacks are not part of his game. If he stays in GB his value is low as he is the 3rd ILB on the team. His best bet is back to a MLB spot in 4-3 scheme.

Right now the injuries he has had last couple years bother me. Never been a big player and the years are starting to take a toll on his body.

I don't see him staying as a backup so if he makes a 4-3 team he could have value if he can stay healthy.

I don't think Barnett will accept to be a backup. I feel like he still has something in him and could be a tackling machine.

I don't have a link but I thought I read somewhere that possibly his name is linked to San Diego chargers. I would think if he went there - he would be a 3 down backer. Thoughts? Have you heard this too?

His injury last year was a wrist injury-similar to Urlacher's the year before. ESPN blog says he could go to Tampa but that's just speculation if Ruud leaves.

Seattle loves picking up players too.

He almost has to be cut by the Packers as he contract is way too high to be a backup there. Even though I still think he could beat out AJ Hawk for fun. But than a big contract still sitting on bench

I think he would be a hot FA pickup if he is healthy and most reports indicate this. Giants as my guess

Barnett is more over rated than Hawk. Barnett has made a ton of tackles and swung the sword for many years. But more importanly he has led the league for the last 5 years in blitzing directly into a lineman. He has very few turnovers or sacks over his career. Hawk turned the corner last year and has been at lest steady each year with making tackles and staying on the field. If the Packers can trade Barnett it would be great to add a pick next year. Chillar is there to backup and they have some younger options to help out for depth.

Tampa picking him up(and letting Ruud go) to transition Foster in makes sense to me. Doubt this will happen though.

With the NFL lockout, reportedly, making significant strides Friday, some thoughts turn to what the salary cap will look like.

ESPN’s John Clayton wrote that approximately seven teams could have some cap issues if the number is set at $120 million. (It could be as low as $117 million.)

One of those teams – the Packers.

Clayton points out the Packers would save $4.4 by cutting or trading linebacker Nick Barnett and $4.5 if tackle Mark Tauscher comes off the payroll.

“The Packers really don’t have a cap problem, particularly if they move linebacker Nick Barnett. Cutting or trading him saves the team about $4.4 million. They can save close to $4.5 million if right tackle Mark Tauscher doesn’t come back. The Packers are $62,000 under the cap.”

Hawk is due to make $10 million, which is guaranteed on the first day of the league year. They are not going to want to pay that, so something with him will have to be done too. Restructure, cut and re-sign, whatever. Barnett is 30 and has finished 2 of the last 3 seasons on IR. They should cut him and get that $4.4 million savings.

Some team needing to add salary to get to the minimum could trade for Barnett too.

In March they cut him and then re-signed him but I don't know the details of that.
