NL All-Star Shortstops (1 Viewer)

OK, so under the assumption that Jose Reyes is starting, if you're the NL manager, who do you take out of the following:

Edgar Renteria 10 HR, 36 RBI, .333 AVG, .915 OPS

Hanley Ramirez 9, 24, .325, .890 (and 22 SB)

J.J Hardy 17, 49, .282, .840

Jimmy Rollins 13, 43, .278, .840 ( and 13 SB)

What's the max that you take, 2 backups (3 total SS including Reyes)?

Does this all come down to which teammates make the team?(i.e. Rollins doesn't go if Utley does;Ramirez might go if Uggla/MCabrera don't go)

I think Renteria and Hardy are the picks here. Renteria is having a resurgent season and really held the Braves lineup together when Chipper was out. Hardy has too many homers to ignore, even for a young guy.

Ramirez is quite talented but he doesn't come through when it counts. His RISP is only .265 while he bats .388 with bases empty.

Tough call for Jimmy Rollins. It's between him and Hardy for that 3rd SS. I guess you could make the argument that Rollins SB makes up for the 4 less HR.

I'd take Hardy and Rollins, although I'm trying to think who else could represent the Braves (Smoltz is about it) since Andruw has struggled and chipper has been hurt. That may get Renteria in. He is deserving.

I think Hardy is a must.

I'd take Renteria over J-Ro and Ramirez jsut because he's really performed above the mean this year and his raw stats are worthy of inclusion. But all these guys deserve to be there IMO.

I believe the element of manager's choice has been close to eliminated.

Each team consists of 32 players. These players are currently selected though the following process:Fan voting: Baseball fans vote on the starting position players for the All-Star Game. Player voting: Pitchers and one back-up player for each position are elected by the players. If the top vote-getter at a position has also been selected via fan voting, the second-place finisher in this category is selected. Manager selection: The managers of the 30 MLB teams and the Commissioner's Office will fill the roster up to 31 players. Final vote: After the lists of 31 players for each league is announced, fans will vote for one additional player, chosen from a list of 5 players provided by the manager and the Commissioner's Office. Replacements: After the roster is selected, the manager and the Commissioner's Office will replace players who are injured or who decline to participate.
By my math, 8-9 position players x 2 = 16-18 players. Add in 10 pitchers and 1 last player in pick = 29 players. That leaves 3-5 picks that the manager and league get to pick together and with each team needing a minimum of 1 player there will likely be only a couple slots to fill. IMO, the manager may have a greater say in replacement picks for injured players but the manager really has a lot less input than previously.

I had forgotten about the player vote. I would think that would help out a veteran like Renteria or Rollins land the #2 job.

The more I think about it, Rollins getting in would be a flat out joke. He has the worst OBP of all the contenders, and is a leadoff hitter. He's very overrated and I have no idea how a guy that small hits that many home runs. He is a very good baserunner.

I still think Hanley Ramirez deserves to be there. His OBP is slight lower than Renteria's, (and 50 points higher than Rollins and Hardy), he has more steals and has 61 runs. His power numbers aren't awe-inspiring, but with 9 homers so far (only 1 less than Renteria), he is well on his way to putting up 20 homers, stealing 60 bases and scoring 125 runs.

This is a breakout season for Hardy, and thus why he may get the nod, but Ramirez and Renteria are both better than Hardy by quite a margin.

Why would it be a joke? You could make a case for all 4 of these guys. Rollins may have a lower OBP but the guy has a ton of steals and even a little bit of power (you can't punish him just because he's a leadoff hitter or because he's "small"). I believe he also leads the league in triples and I'm sure he's up there in runs. I'm not saying that he should make it but I definitely wouldn't call it a joke if he did.

Because he is the 5th best SS in the league. He doesn't have a ton of steals, he has 13 (1/3 of what Reyes has). And yes, a leadoff hitter that has a .325 obp should be punished. He is not helping his team if he gets on base less than 1/3 of the times he is up and he is getting the most ab's (Julio Lugo, can you hear me?)

Comparing the 5 shortstops (Ramirez, Renteria, Hardy, Reyes, Rollins) on the major categories.....HR--Rollins is 2ndRBI--Rollins is 2ndRuns--Rollins is 2ndBA--Rollins is 5thOBP--Rollins is 5thOPS--Rollins tied for 4thSB--Rollins is 3rdDoubles--Rollins is 3rdTriples--Rollins is 1stSo the guy is behind in average and OBP but he's shown more power than 3 of the other shortstops and is also a pretty good baserunner. Again, not saying that he should make it but certainly not a joke if he does.
