No trouble falling asleep, but staying asleep a different story (1 Viewer)

I can fall asleep easily....but like clockwork, after about 4 hours I wake up and have trouble falling back asleep.

I've tried melatonin, sleep gummies and presently shoot these packets right before bed called Healthycell REM Sleep which seem to work the best for me (Amazon link below, if curious). Any tips, tricks, things to look into?

Again....I sleep fine, but only for 4 hrs. How can I tack on those extra 3-4 hrs each night?

I'm very healthy, workout daily, don't drink alcohol nightly (except a night or two on weekends), not taking in caffeine late (just water or milk).

Take an afternoon siesta. Many cultures break up their sleep into two chunks one in the middle of the night and the other in the middle of the day.

Usually what I'll do is wake up at 4am.....go on my laptop to get caught up on work emails, read FBG, read Reddit, eventually my eyes get heavy and then around 6am go back to bed and sleep for around 3 hrs. So, it's not the worst but it would just be nice to just sleep all night and wake up around 7am.

Ever tested for sleep apnea?
Agree here - worth looking into. It's pretty common and you may be waking yourself up due to the apnea.
So, let's say I do have sleep apnea....then what? Is the only fix to wear that Bane looking mask every night? I'd rather just wake up.
One step at a time, but if you have it, an ENT specialist would go over options with you.

ETA: FWIW, I was found to have mild sleep apnea less than a year ago and now use the CPAP machine. It was PITA at first, but have gotten used to it.

Regarding the sleep apnea, looked up online and all the suggestions to help it, I already do. I don't smoke, exercise 5x per week, very healthy lifestyle, only drink 1 day a week usually on a Fri or Sat night.
----

Prevention
Sleep apnea can be prevented by adapting to lifestyle changes such as:
  • Quit smoking
  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain healthy lifestyle
  • Stop drinking alcohol

All though these above practices can help reduce symptoms not all types can be prevented. Some type of sleep apnea requires surgery to correct.

What were your issues that made you go in to get tested and diagnosed?

That can help to reduce symptoms, but it does not prevent you from having it. I weigh 150 pounds (exercise and don’t smoke) and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I wear a CPAP at night, but like Zamboni mentioned, if you have it, doctor can go over options with you.

Heavy snoring - was waking myself up. The real catalyst though was it was driving my wife nuts.

You're fine, I do the same thing sometimes. There's 4 people in my household so I enjoy the quiet time for a couple hours and go back to sleep usually.

You could just stop fighting it. It may just be your natural sleep cycle.

Biphasic sleep

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I kind of, at this point, have just accepted and adapted. Part of me likes it, but seems unnatural. There's something to be said for waking up at 4am naturally (not due to stress) and getting out ahead of work emails before anyone else wakes up.

I get that. It's just me so I'm not bothering anybody by waking up early and I'm not a big snorer. Nothing really "wakes me"....I just kind of naturally open my eyes, check the time and then I'm just laying there only half asleep until I get annoyed and just get up.

If any guys are curious what communicating with women on dating apps is like, just look at the last 7 posts with belljr. Uncanny.
Doubtful - at least in my experience women never answer the question asked and then go on on about stuff you never asked. But I will say that is in real life and not an app.

I succinctly answered each question asked ;) I figured you were smart enough to infer the rest. My mistake ;) .... if you wanted all the answers you should have asked all the questions. I'm not one to say more than is required.......

Yeah, but you give no add'l context or anything of real value. Like pulling teeth to get some substance....dating app communications to a T.

Sooooooo, now that you have the dental device is it helping? Why did you not stick with the CPAP machine?

Biphasic sleep

Yep. I had a similar phase when I was working from home, making my own hours etc. After researching it, I found out it used to be quite common so I just ended up embracing it.

If you only sleep 4-5 hrs and you're working your standard office 9-5, you won't have that time for the second nap so you'll be exhausted at the end of the day and probably get back to a 'normal' straight 8 hour cycle. Just my theory though.

Yep, this could very well be the case. That nap is probably enabling my sleep pattern to lock in this way. Again, not the worst thing in the world. I could probably try to force myself for no naps for a week and see what changes....but those naps are so glorious.

I really wanted to like this post, but the ridiculous anti-woman statement prevented that. Men do exactly the same thing.

Fair..... I do work with a fella I want to punch in the face when he starts talking because I know its going to take 10 minutes for a 1 minute answer

@offdee
I might have missed it, but you don't seem to be complaining about being exhausted during the day. You're just remarking on the difference between the hours you sleep straight through v the hours you think you should sleep straight through. Maybe you're ok.

I use a CPAP.
W/O the CPAP I used to sleep 4-5 hours straight, was exhausted during the afternoons, and would fall asleep in front of the TV for an hour or so and then go to bed.

NyQuil addiction worked for me. Doctor said it wasn't good for my liver so I had to stop but it was some great sleep. Dont use ZzzQuil though. That one is said to give early onset dementia.

Yeah, NyQuil or Tylenol PM stuff is no good for me. I'm literally a zombie for the next 24 hrs after I wake up. Not worth the passed out sleep.

Yeah, not exhausted but since work from home can usually find a couple of hours somewhere to take a nap. Without that nap not sure. Maybe I'll give it a try this week of no naps at all and see what changes.

I've tried melatonin, sleep gummies
Is this the same as weed gummies?
If not, you taking wrong gummies.

Nope not weed gummies...just the random ones you can get at Target (Goli brand I think). I tried CBD gummies and they knocked me out good but again woke up 5 hrs later.

I'm in Milwaukee so weed not legal here, but if move to Austin or Nevada soon may be a different story. Just looked it up....legal in Nevada (duh) but not legal in Austin.

And yes, I realize I could still get my hands on them in Milwaukee if I really wanted to.

I wear Invisalign night guards just when I sleep to keep all the chicklets looking good so dental device not in the cards for me.

I have mild apnea. I'm a stomach sleeper and just never was to get the stomach sleeping and CPAP to work well. Yes the dental device has been a gamchanger

not taking in caffeine late

What about early?

I never drink coffee and rarely drink soda. The only thing I have daily is first thing when I wake up is one of those zero sugar white Monsters. It's my coffee substitute.
