I don't know about that. The Jets weren't going to keep Herm -- Woody didn't want him around, and Herm was unhappy with Woody and his contract. The Jets need to replace Herm, and every day they keep him around is a day they can't hire a new coach. They already missed out on Childress, and the sooner they begin the process to find a replacement the better. Getting a 4th rounder is dissapointing, but not more dissapointing than getting a 2nd rounder and a bad coach, or a 2nd rounder and an unhappy front office.
If the Jets were to get rid of Herm no matter what, which of the following scenarios represent the smartest business decision?
1) Fire him and potentially pay him 2 million dollars per year for the next two years
or
2) Trade him for a pick (any pick).
If the front offices of other clubs believed he was about to be fired - I'd certainly go with #2
How about #3
Play some freaking poker and tell Herm he is the coach at his salary no matter what next year and if KC wants you they will have to pony up a #1 or #2 pick. If they don't and the Jets really don't want him commin back - wait until all the vacancies are filled - fire Herm and replace him with a coordinator on staff.
At least you have diginity!
A 4th rd pick in this case is like tossing a $1,000 per night call girl a $5 tip after you get a freebie from a friend. In either case its the Jets that got screwed!
