Oakland A's thread (1 Viewer)

Cespedes' contract stipulates he's non-tendered when he becomes a FA, so draft pick compensation can't be attached.

Him being traded was a question of when, not if.

Talked to baseball insider who said #Athletics Billy Beane has been exploring big trades for Yoenis Cespedes since the end of last year.

Yep. There was a proposal of him for Pollock this spring that would've made a lot of sense for Oakland.

Who is announcing the game tonight? Could be the worst baseball announcer I have ever heard. Holy Cow.

Lester made a case to throw his name in the ring for the cy young, after pitching 9 innings, 3 hit shut out ball last night

Pretty sure King Felix will win it, and if he doesn't Kluber has a strong case. Can't envision a realistic scenario in which Felix or Kluber don't (deservedly) win.

2014 payroll was 82mm, looks like about 40mm committed next year, before rookie contracts and arbitration.

Lester, Hammel, Gregerson, Lowrie, Callaspo and Soto are all FA's. Biggest needs are 2B/SS, a catcher that actually plays D, and maybe a DH?

Three potential FA's I see that might be fits are Lind in a full-time DH role, splashing on Russell Martin and the trading away of 1 or 2 of the current catchers who don't defend well, and JJ Hardy, who the A's will probably value more than most because of their emphasis on defense.

Rotation looks like Samardjiza, Kazmir, Gray, Chavez, and Parker and Griffin are coming back from TJS. Pretty solid there. Think Gregerson's the only reliever the A's are losing.

####ty way to end the season, but they set up pretty well for 2015, esp. if they continue to increase payroll.

Not much of a middle class in the SP market, A's might stand pat there in lieu of adding depth. Get Brett Anderson back? Peavy? Colby Lewis?

Santana, Scherzer, Shields, Lester are all going to be way too much money.

D-Backs have a paucity of SS and obviously a lot of needs, also LaRussa and Stew are there now. Wonder if they'll do business with Billy? Probably a better tack to take than throwing a ton of money at Hardy or someone.

The dude in the 8 ball jacket who slapped the crap out of some chick in NYC is a former Oakland A's prospect. So the team has that going for it, which is nice.

With Davis so easily available, you gotta wonder why you bother splurging on a guy like Butler.

Davis' K/BB and LD rates were really good in 2014, the latter leading one to think his BABIP should rebound some. Second straight guy with way less power than you'd think for his size.

I mentioned it in the White Sox thread. Wish they went in his direction instead of LaRoche's

A's are taking calls on Moss, Reddick, and Jaso now, per Slusser. If they can't find a match, they could let Davis go, but I suspect they'll flip one of them for something.

Moss and Reddick have two years of arb left, Jaso's under contract for '15. Ideally, I think Jaso goes.

Looks like Beane went for it all last year, as he should, and now is going for a short rebuild, I like his haul for Donaldson, but question the Butler signing.

I think it's entirely too soon to say he's going for a rebuild. Let's see what Beane does next. It's possible he's doing what he's done in the past - get enough talent to compete immediately, but also snag young guys to restock the farm.

If he were going for a total rebuild, I don't know why he'd be talking to Atlanta about Justin Upton (and Gattis).

True.

Rockies rule 5 pick Mark Canha picked up for Austin House. Dunno who he will potentially replace on the 25 man, hopefully oakland can send miami something to get him outright.
