Obama to push for mandatory paid leave

The White House will announce a major push Thursday to require paid leave for American workers.

In a blog post on LinkedIn Wednesday, Valerie Jarrett, a senior advisor to the President, said Obama will sign a memorandum to ensure federal employees have access to at least six weeks of paid sick leave when a new child arrives.

The president will also call on Congress to offer six weeks of paid administrative leave.

We can't say we stand for family values when so many women in this country have to jeopardize their financial security just to take a few weeks off of work after giving birth, Jarrett said in the release.

We can't say we're for middle-class stability when a man has to sacrifice his economic security to care for his ailing mother.

Obama will also pressure Congress to pass the Healthy Families Act, which will give Americans the ability to earn seven days of paid sick leave, and announce additional funding through the Department of Labor to help states study how to create their own paid leave programs.

The announcement comes two days after The Hill reported that Democrats are seizing mandatory paid leave as their next big pocketbook issue in 2016.

Out of 185 countries and territories in the world surveyed by the International Labor Organization, the United States is one of only two that does not offer paid maternity leave. Papua New Guinea is the other.

I'm no men's rights type of guy, but it seems disingenuous to give one group of people guaranteed time off and demand equal pay.

And here comes the kitchen sink.

By the way this is the European socialist stuff that opponents said would come. (Look folks don't btch, I'm just saying, not whether it's a good idea or bad idea, it's just what it is).

Of course it's the GOP acting as a bulwark so no political consequences, you know like anything that would have resulted if a Democratic Congress woulda-coulda-shoulda passed them in 2009-2011.

What a trip. I guess we see how the final 2 years of this presidency will play out.

fmla is already in place. it gives both man and women paid leave for 6 six weeks in the first calendar year the child is born. it's not full pay, but it does ensure job security upon return.

That doesn't sound good. So why is this a bad idea?
I don't know. We'll have to wait for someone who thinks it's a bad idea to explain.
Won't someone think of the corporations???

I kind of agree, which is why I think "family values" would also be well served by paid paternity leave, like many other countries have. I doubt that happens any time soon, but I think it would be a good idea.

He is turning us into Europe. We became what we are by working hard, yeah lets take that away. He strives to make America unexceptional.

Idiot.

The major drawback is that Travis Henry would never have to work a day in his life.

I don't think it would impact large cororations much. It would hit small businesses a lot harder.

Not that it matters. It's just going to benefit federal government workers anyway.

I think FMLA already guarantees paid maternity leave. It's paid out as disability.
FMLA does not guarantee paid maternity leave. Certain states offer limited disability benefits for covered individuals following childbirth, but that's not a creature of federal law.

:lmao:
Maybe he can put us on the Euro next.

An unexceptional man, doing unexceptional things, doing all he can to turn us into an unexceptional country.
Who IS exceptional?
We used to be. We now have too many vunnables like yourself just wantin to do what vunnables do best.

Our children and grandchildren will pay the price. Be proud of your accomplishments.

The federal FMLA does not provide for paid leave.
i realize that, but combined with disability, both men and women can get 6 weeks, job protected, paid leave
You sure you're not talking about a CA law? When my youngest was born six years ago I received two weeks paternity leave from my company. If I wanted to take the other four weeks I would have had to use my own vacation time.

Vunnable? Is this some Hannity thing?
Has nothing to do with Hannity:

Vunnables
A Non-Racist and non-derogatory term describing ignorant people of all colors and creeds who refuse to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and get a job. Usually reliant upon the government to collect their welfare check to pay for their new fake Fendi purse and Escalade lease payment.

Never heard of this before

Agreed regarding men's leave as well. This is still a step in the right direction. I'm fortunate to be able to take 6 weeks paid when I have a child. I love that time I get to have with my children.

Not so in most states. In California yes, pursuant to State law (California's Paid Family Leave program).

Never heard that. Sounds like something a talk show blow hard "personality" would make up.

Only if you are a racist.

By the way this is the European socialist stuff that opponents said would come.

As I said wasn't commenting on the bad/good of it, I'm just guessing the "strategy" here (if there is one) is a steady stream of proposals we can look forward to that will be targeted at women, the <25 vote, and a variety of demographic strata.

I think the 'rest of world' thing is not in and of itself a reason. I mean the USA is where business is our business, people work longer here, we get less time off, etc., etc.

I talk to people in EU and have friends and family there. I call a girl, she's working in Switzerland. I talk to another guy he's taking a 3 week "annual leave." I talk to another guy and say 'why don't you lower your rates' he says that's illegal.

Now is this all bad? No maybe not, but let's have the conversation for what it is.

I don't have the gumption or the energy to google that but I fear what the results would be.

lol at the first adjective after "non-derogatory" being "ignorant"

Do non socialist countries offer maternity leave?
I guess I invited this. - I am admittedly thinking of Europe, I don't want to get into an extended debate about what's socialist and what countries are socialist. I am not calling Obama Brezhnev here. The USA has stood alone in a number of ways from the rest of the world when it comes to this and other things considered part of the workers' package in Europe.

I'm just saying it's just that, a package, the free tuition / education, the added maternity leave (this must go beyond FMLA, right?), and I'm sure there's more to come. The main idea being that government can, should and must provide this whole support structure of which this is just a piece. Some would even call it (this whole package) a right, those people might be... socialists (sorry).
