Oculus Rift VR Glasses (1 Viewer)

So does anyone understand why Facebook spent $2B on this?
To finally own something that might actually turn a profit one day?

Doesn't seem to fit with their current business plan of buying overvalued companies that don't make anything.
I guess my question is what are they going to do with it? Interactive News Feeds with ads?
Like with their other acquisitions, they are probably planning on it operating on its current trajectory for now. Of course, the very nature of who is buying Oculus will likely stunt its growth as it loses the support of the development and gaming communities.

#### Facebook

I bet FB is planning some VR meets Google Hangouts kind of thing. Then you could have virtual orgies.

They could also simply be preemptively buying user data.

When people are walking around with these, at least we will know who the morons are. Whatever happened to that google glass stupidity?

Maybe they can implant this into people's eyeballs.

Well this was supposed to be used for gaming, not general surveillance

Here's hoping Facebook isn't run by a bunch of idiots. I imagine they're just buying/backing this technology and will leave it be...only with much more $$$ to back it.

Unlike Google Glass, these things are meant to be worn in your parents basement. Google Glass is intended for practical purposes, but I am sure developers will make games as well.

Google Glass actually has tons of potential. For example, they could replace GoPro cameras, and be used by our troops.

Sounds like zucko wants everyone wearing these things.

I think the kid that started the company is 21...sick.
I dont want to sound like a hater, but all he did was make existing virtual reality better. With hd graphics, 3d, and increased processing power, it was inevitable.

The thing is that these things are still a few years away from being mass produced, and by then its going to be 3 year old technology. There will undoubtedly be a newer version, or competing products to deal with. I'm still skeptical about it. Everything we have heard about 3D the past 5 years is that the goal is to not need glasses. This thing looks cool, but it's a step backwards IMO. It's a niche product that would be hard to sell to the masses.

Agreed. But I am sure the final-ish iterations will be built on the current software/hardware.

Eventually we will get some kind of Google glass/OR hybrid.

That's the only thing that would make sense for Facebook is if they made a Google Glass competitor. But knowing Facebook, they'll find a way to royally screw it up. I can see it now, you're wearing Facebook Glass and it shows your random strangers FB profiles. That'll be fun...

To be fair I am terrible at remembering names so I would find that useful.

I remember Paul Harvey called that shot about ten years ago, maybe more, and I have been hoping for it to happen ever since.

I used these about three weeks ago. A friend of mine works for a movie studio and there is going to be a pacific rim franchise relaunch at the end of next year. Comics, movie, etc. and an Oculus game. It is insane. I told him whoever uses one of these for gTa, gran tourismo/need for speed, or Call of duty is going to make a bazillion dollars. It made playing ps4 boring for me in about 3 minutes.
