So let's say that NK decides to launch a "test" missile. We have to attempt to intercept, right? Or do we just track it and intercept if it is actually headed somewhere?

It's an interesting call to make. The reality is the missile likely has no payload. And if it does end hitting somewhere the damage would be from the weight and momentum. But maybe you shoot it down just to show you can and send a message to those possibly seeking engagement. You have a very aggressive general tied closely to a young, inexperienced(and possibly not in control) leader. Need to be sure everyone understands just what kind of mess they are getting into.

I figure at worst they are going to fire a test missile into the ocean to "show their strength".

That being said, I think they could easily hit Seoul or Japan with a missile if they wanted to. It's just hard to imagine them being that suicidal.

I had a wierd thought. Imagine that the young dictator went to school in Switzerland, learned about the Western World, and felt sorry for all the people that were brainwashed. How would he get them "free"? If he went to his country and changed laws, he would probably get ousted by the main people in charge. Maybe in a weird way this is a suicide mission. I mean, if he was to provoke a war, the leadership of NK would get annihilated.

However, it would open up all the people to South Korea, and lead to a better life for them?

No way China goes there. First Taiwan ain't no cupcake. They are armed to the teeth. Second we have pledged to protect Taiwan. China isn't ready to play that game and they know it.

They don't have to get that lucky - figure its about 200 miles across at its widest from NK - aim for the middle and you have +/- 100 miles to play with - they don't need to hit anything in particular to light the powder keg.

100 miles is a lot smaller area to hit than people think but your right it's not like lottery lucky. Still given what we have seen from their previous tests there would still be some luck involved.

Russia has a million man standing military with roughly 1 million reservists. But as I have posted before those numbers don't tell you much. Their military was never all that to start with and now it really sucks. Completely hollowed out at this point. China has a 2 million man standing Army with 1 million in reserve. Probably the more stable force of the two and more likely to actually fight at those numbers. Russia has more aircraft, China has more tanks.

They probably won't get involved in this one, but they've had border disputes in that area with one another for a long time, I think at least the past few centuries. Not much has happened lately, I think, but they've gone to war a few times over it.

I think China takes Taiwan back eventually and I don't see the USA stopping it. But you're right, it will be a while. These North Korea shenanigans just makes it harder for them; they don't want SK and Japan having such a compelling reason to arm up with the USA.

I think China takes Taiwan back eventually and I don't see the USA stopping it. But you're right, it will be a while. These North Korea shenanigans just makes it harder for them; they don't want SK and Japan having such a compelling reason to arm up with the USA.

Only if it's a political deal between Taiwan and China. There is no way in the foreseeable future we let China take Taiwan by force.

Japan is directly east of North Korea. The fact they're moving the missiles there means that they're trying to provoke a reaction.

maybe. Its not easy to intercept a missile. I don't believe the US has anything deployed to do so. Japan has some sort of an anti-missile system, AFAIK its never been used.
