***** Offical Steve Smith thread ***** (1 Viewer)

3-15-0 today.

He's not even a WR4 with Carr at QB. There are probably 50-55 WRs who are better starting options than Smith as long as Carr is the Carolina QB. What a shocking decline in value.

Im considering releasing him this week from a redraft league for Sidney Rice, and Im stuck with him in a dynasty league

Carr should be flat out embarrassed. And the coaching staff should be fired if they start Carr if Vinny can as much as stand up.

How is it that Joey Harrington is the butt of a million jokes but David Carr - who is ten times worse and was the #1 overall pick - isn't? He's flat out terrible. Joey at least has a good game every 3 or 4 weeks :ptts:

I have NEVER, in my almost 37 years on this Earth, ever seen a QB more scared, with less poise and pocket presence than David Carr. He either panics and runs, throws out of bounds, or gets sacked. That's it. That's what he brings on every down. I don't know why the Panthers would start him over Moore or Vinny, even if the other QBs were banged up. Panther won't win another game with Carr at the helm.

here is a sad statistic, Moore completed 2 passes, and got more than a 3rd of Carr's total yardage in those 2 completions.

What could have been (if Delhomme had not been injured). On the bright side, this will likely plant Carr permanently on the bench. I wouldn't move Smith in a dynasty league, tho. He'll easily be a top-5 WR for the foreseeable future providing they get adequate QB play. I believe you'll see them go get a real backup QB (or maybe even one that will compete with Delhomme for the starting job).

For redraft leagues, we've got to hope Vinny can get (& stay) healthy.

I was shocked he started the second half. I'm not sure what the downside is in going with Moore. It's not like he's going to be worse than Carr. It's impossible to be worse than Carr. So at worst it's a wash but at least if you go to Moore maybe -- maybe -- there's a chance at having someone who remotely resembles an NFL quarterback playing for you.

So after that horrible game, should owners be trying to get anything they can for him or holding out hope that a new QB will come in and be able to get the ball to Smith?

I've been trying to dump him for the last several weeks with zero success. I might actually have to start him this week since Welker is on bye but if I can pick up someone more serviceable,I'll do it and start them instead. I honestly dont know what you could get for him,Kevin Walters, maybe a slumping Roy Williams at this point.

Just traded Smith for Braylon Edwards.

(of course, I had to throw in Ben Roethlisberger)

If you have a good QB to keep starting that's a steal.
Yes, I have Favre.
Great trade for you. I see no reason to believe Smith will come anywhere close to Edwards the rest of the season in terms of production. Edwards is an elite WR; Smith is a WR3/WR4 right now. Favre obviously is playing great and is a strong QB1. Very nice trade for you. :X

Who are you guys starting over Steve Smith this week? Braylon Edwards, Brandon Marshall and Isaac Bruce are getting the nod over him this week for me.

Smith owner here...

I've really been wrestling with the idea of trading him. I think it all depends who you have on your bench that you can start ahead of him and what your record is. If you have a decent replacement or if you think you're going to make the playoffs, then you should probably hold on to him for a couple of more weeks and see how the QB situation shakes out. I can't imagine that Carolina is going to stick with Carr for much longer. Any other QB would be an upgrade at this point.

But, like me, not everyone has a Greg Jennings type guy to throw in your lineup. I'm looking at either Mike Furrey or DJ Hackett and I'm also in a position where I need to win almost every game to make the playoffs.

So I've been trying to move him this week. I think I could probably get Jerricho Cotchery for him straight up. Just a little nervous to pull the trigger.

I have Greg Jennings, Chris Chambers, DJ Hackett, Ike Hilliard, and Ron Curry. I am benching Steve Smith as long as David Carr is under center. DJ Hackett is coming off IR to play for me this coming week.

the fact that steve smith is tanking the rest of the season is just fine by me, just picked him up in my dynasty league, the worse he does, the worse i do, and i have three #1 picksjust traded LJ, Reggie Brown for Steve Smith, a #1 and a #3, lets get to the offseason already...at this point it doe appear Delhomme will be back QB'in in Carolina next year correct? I'm gonna look to pick him up off the waiver wire week 14 or so...
I don't think Smith has any intentions on tanking the season. He will try his hardest, but he has to get the ball for him to do anything.Delhomme will be the quarterback next season. It's too bad he was injured this year. He had his best start ever at the beginning of the year. He is a great leader for the team. He caught a lot of flack last year for many things that weren't his fault. He can make some boneheaded throws from time to time, but he wasn't the cause of last years disappointing season. I've always respected how he takes the heat for when they lose, and never takes the glory for when they win. He gives his team credit for their accomplishments. They need him.
oh yeah i didnt mean to say smith will intentionally tank, smith has the ability to score everytime he touches the ball, and won't hold back from doing so in any situation, i just meant with his QB play i wouldn't mind if his #'s tank, sorry for those of you that have him in redraft, but from my rebuilding dynasty standpoint, it's best case scenario, i just traded for a top 5 WR next year, will be picking up delhomme off the waivers and will be set to make moves next year in dynasty with a handful of draftscliffs: great time to make a move for steve smith in a dynasty league if you're rebuilding and the owner is making a run...

Until I see otherwise, I'll be starting Justin Fargas over Steve Smith at my flex.

I can't believe I just type that ...

Steve Smith is sitting on my bench. Replaced him with Santonio Holmes (my other WR is Reggie Wayne).

I tried to trade Smith/Freddy T. for Rudi/Evans and was shot down. Looking back, I should have offered JLew instead of Fred. Maybe then I wouldn't be in this Steve Smith mess.

So Testaverde looks like he is playing this week. I think this gives Smith a major bump.

Last game with Vinny under center 10 catches 136 yards and a TD

Just traded this week S. Smith/B. Watson for K. Winslow Jr. My other WR's are T. Holt, LFitz, R. White, J. Galloway, and I. Bruce. Kind of a bummer that it looks like Testy is starting this week but how much faith can you put in a 44 year old QB.

i have a deal pending to trade away Steve Smith and Lamont Jordan for L. White and R. Curry but i am afraid at this point with vinny comming back that smith may take off.

I would be left with Housh, Curry, Walter, Northcutt, De. Williams and Brad Smith as my WR options and that looks pretty slim

I offered Calvin Johnson for Steve Smith...
As a Smith owner, I'd turn that down. Johnson has been a major disappointment and it could be argued he's the fourth option in the passing game at best behind Williams, Jones and McDonald. I like him but it may not happen for Calvin this season and even though Smith's value has sunk dramatically I'd rather go with him than Johnson.

Calvin is locked up for the next two seasons with a decent contract while SS will be a FA in our league after this year.

Ahh ok. I was thinking redraft. Sorry.

Do you think I would be insane to start Isaac Bruce over Steve Smith
Literally insane? No. I would start Smith over Bruce every week (unless he broke his leg). Smith has proved that he can turn a five yard slant into an 85 yard touchdown. He's that good. I just talked myself out of trading him...

Just read this little bit of info on CBSSportsline:

"News: Panthers WR Steve Smith has only five catches for 33 yards in his last two games and has only one catch in the past three meetings between the Panthers and the Falcons, who meet again in Week 10 in Charlotte."

1 catch in 3 games against the Falcons? I'm trying to confirm that but I had no idea...are they counting games that he didn't play in? I would have to imagine that a stat like this, if true, would greatly affect his projections for this week.

DISREGARD: Smith has one catch in last two games (2006 and 2007), but going back to 2005 he smoked the Falcons (not that it has much bearing on this week).

soo im in a keepers league and last year my QB situation was hurting bad. I traded s. smith away for mcnabb. Once mcnabb got injured i was really mad.. Turns out, it wasnt such a bad trade in the long run.. (not that mcnabb is anything special)

I cant afford another whiff with Smith so I'm going with Braylon, Evans and Mason.

I never thought I'd be starting two WW pickups over Smith :goodposting:

So he's 33rd in the NFL in red zone targets. Why is this amazing? Considering that Carolina has barely sniffed the end zone, I'd say that's not too bad.
