Was weird, was playing 20+ min a night in every preseason game and looked like a five year vet. Then started out the reg season with a couple shaky games early on including a minus 5 stinker against Chicago looking every bit a rook(Taves and Kane can do that to ya). Since that game has settled in nicely the last four and is back to looking pretty good. He's not flashy but makes steady, veteran plays you wouldn't expect from a rook. Very calm and smart with the puck, kind of reminds me of Kimmo Timmonen with his size and play. How's Provorov looking?
How did they fit that under the cap?Hampus Lindholm gets 6 years/31.5 million. Less than Ristolainen, good deal for Anaheim.
They're 1.4M over, Lindholm won't make it for 10-14 days. Will be interesting to see what happens. Cam Fowler being traded is still the big rumor. I think that's a huge mistake. How did they fit that under the cap?

There have been James Van Riemsdyk for Fowler rumours around Toronto for months but they don't really make sense to me. For one thing, JVR's cap hit is higher than Fowler's and the Leafs are up against the cap, so it seems like a non-starter. The speculation is that Anaheim with Perry/Getzlaf/Kesler aging have to be going for it and will ask for a solid NHL player in return for Fowler, they can't dump him for picks/prospects.Rangers in on Fowler. Guess we will see

he'd be a #1 in Detroit. easily. There were some rumors for the Wings too with Mantha or Svechnikov plus someone like Smith. I don't like that deal even though Detroit needs good defensemen. I don't think Fowler is a #1 D and that is what the Wings really need.
I don't disagree with that. I just don't think he really should be a bonafide number 1.he'd be a #1 in Detroit. easily.
He played like a #1 last year for Anaheim. Clearly a good top-pairing defenseman. Seems odd to worry about whether he's a #1 or #2 when he's better than any other option you have.I don't disagree with that. I just don't think he really should be a bonafide number 1.
Interesting that McIlrath was just placed on waivers. Same guy the Rangers drafted instead of Fowler in one of the dumbest decisions i could remember.Say the Rangers offer up JT Miller as the forward they're willing to part with in a deal for a defenseman, which I have to believe is the case as they survey the market. Is that close for Fowler or would a lot more need to go the other way?
Don't forget about Tarasenko too.Interesting that McIlrath was just placed on waivers. Same guy the Rangers drafted instead of Fowler in one of the dumbest decisions i could remember.
I think Fowler is a better player than Miller but I also think Anaheim will be lucky to get someone that good for Fowler given the situation they've put themselves in.Say the Rangers offer up JT Miller as the forward they're willing to part with in a deal for a defenseman, which I have to believe is the case as they survey the market. back in 2010, the KHL was a real threat to keep players like Tarasenko and Kuznetsov away so a lot of NHL teams were scared to draft those guys.Don't forget about Tarasenko too.
While I agree it's not defensible, and was clear evidence of Sather and co not thinking about where the NHL was going in the coming years, I think McIlrath could and would be pretty good elsewhere. No higher than a 2nd pairing ceiling of course but AV has less than zero interest in playing him anywhere despite Gorton being a believer.
Makes sense.I think Fowler is a better player than Miller but I also think Anaheim will be lucky to get someone that good for Fowler given the situation they've put themselves in.
I'm fairly confident we've had this discussion about the McIlrath pick several times before, and every time I politely ask you to not remind me about it.back in 2010, the KHL was a real threat to keep players like Tarasenko and Kuznetsov away so a lot of NHL teams were scared to draft those guys.
Fowler was basically considered the top defenseman in the draft, and should have been a no brainer for the Rangers at 10. They went after a guy who could fight better than he could skate instead. Everybody knew it was a mistake the instant the pick was made.
I assume somebody will claim McIlrath.I'm fairly confident we've had this discussion about the McIlrath pick several times before, and every time I politely ask you to not remind me about it.

And while it was terrible logic, I believe they thought they had their offensive d-man inMichael Del ZottoBobby Sanguinetti and thought it was right to take McIlrath to be the Beukeboom to DZ's Leetch.
I agree. And I think they would have been able to trade him for something if the entire league didn't know that the Rangers would eventually have to waive him because the coach wasn't going to play him.I assume somebody will claim McIlrath.
My memory is a little fuzzy but I think his lack of a real future was well known by the 2010 draft.fixed

That doesn't sound goodCraig Anderson indefinite leave of absence...
who was the worse pick, sanguinsmelly in 06 or the dead guy in 07?well played
I believe Hugh Jessiman was drafted in 2003.who was the worse pick, sanguinsmelly in 06 or the dead guy in 07?
Dan Blackburn also probably belongs in this conversationI believe Hugh Jessiman was drafted in 2003.
I only worry because of the price tag.He played like a #1 last year for Anaheim. Clearly a good top-pairing defenseman. Seems odd to worry about whether he's a #1 or #2 when he's better than any other option you have.
I'd love to see the Sabres make a run at him, but not sure what the price would be. I love Girgensons, but would be ok with moving him in a deal for Fowler.
Nah before he got hurt he had potential. Even though going goalie in the first round is generally dumb, not even close to being a worse pick than Jessiman.Dan Blackburn also probably belongs in this conversation
What could go wrong with a double blocker using goaler?Nah before he got hurt he had potential. Even though going goalie in the first round is generally dumb, not even close to being a worse pick than Jessiman.
I was going to correct my post that it wasn't so much a bad pick as a horrible way to develop a goalie. They burned him out pretty good.Nah before he got hurt he had potential. Even though going goalie in the first round is generally dumb, not even close to being a worse pick than Jessiman.

This quote re: Despres is kind of scary![]()
And it appears putting Nate Thompson and Despres on LTIR has them under the cap. Fowler is playing wayyyyyyyyyyy better then he's ever played.
The Pavel Brendl/Jamie Lundmark rookie duo* KILLED for me in NHL 99 so I'm not sure what you meanI was going to correct my post that it wasn't so much a bad pick as a horrible way to develop a goalie. They burned him out pretty good.
Pavel Brendl?
