***Official '16-'17 NHL Season Discussion Thread*** (1 Viewer)

"Damn, id really like to watch the NHL all star game, but the 5 hour pregame show for the pro bowl is on. Stupid NHL!"

Without even looking I would guess the skills competition was on the same cable channel all the national games are on.

Top 100 missing Iginla and Thornton IMO.  They mentioned Cam Neely tonight on the Hawks broadcast but he only played ~700 games.

6 current players seems low.

Blues Head Coach Ken Hitchcock was sacked this morning. Mike Yeo takes over.

Because, you know, it's the head coach's fault that the team has the worst save percentage in the league and the softest D in the league. Not the GM's, not the players.

That said, I do get the impression there was a rift growing between Hitchcock and some of the players. Apparently Steen's been crabby lately towards Hitchcock.

Lets play GM for a minute

If I offer you Stepan and Klein for Shattenkirk, would you do it

Blues can't really take on Stepan's contract imo. Plus, he has a lot of years left while Shattenkirk is a pending UFA. Not sure that's a possible trade scenario.

After I spend five minutes clutching my knee because I banged it on a table trying to run to the phone in an overjoyed hurry, yes.

You'd have to take Lehtera, though.

Again, just playing around. Assume, that contracts were a non issue, would that deal get it done?

One more that might be cap friendly. No idea if this gets it done but what about Grabner

Bottom line is that the Rangers need to deal a forward because they can not protect everyone. Im just trying to figure out which ones are wanted. My only no touch guys are Miller, Zibanaejed and Hayes (from the ones that have no movement clauses)

$4.7 mil per through 2018-2019.

Blues are desperate for a center, so Stepan would be of far greater interest than Grabner.
If Gorton really wanted to make a deal, he might offer Step for Shattenkirk and then maybe a swap of Lehtera and Girardi

Will be interesting to see what both teams do

If Henrik plays more like Joel in net, then it doesnt really matter anyway

why would the Rangers give up so much for a pending UFA?

Addition by subtraction I guess. I can only go on what I have heard, but the rumors say that Shattenkirk wants to be a Ranger. He is a local kid and wants to put on a blue shirt. It would help for this year since their defense is atrocious AND it allows the Rangers to protect all of their forwards

There was also something I read that I dont quite understand, but they can sign Shattenkirk after the expansion draft and not have to worry about exposing him. But that is some sort of collusion I would imagine. Something along those lines

right. so they can wait until the summer and sign him without giving up anything.

Vegas will get first crack at signing any free agents prior to the expansion draft. If the player signs with Vegas, then the team that held his rights previously would not lose anybody else in the expansion draft.

If they can get Shattenkirk, yes

Maybe I am off. Would like to hear what @RUSF18 thinks. Also throw up a @jamny signal although he has not been around this thread much this year
I'll take the all around consistency of Stepan. One of my Top 3 favorite Rangers so I'm clearly biased though.

This is my first real season watching a lot of hockey games.  I've seen pretty much every Preds game, but havn't watched any other teams play (aside from when the Preds play them of course) and that Pittsburgh team is really good, they just seem to be on another level then the Preds.  Thought the Preds played really well in the 1st/3rd, but that 2nd period, oof.

23. The league badly wants to change the five-day “bye week” setup, recognizing this is not working for anyone. It is weird to see Ottawa and Toronto with five games in hand on fellow playoff-chaser Boston this late in the season. One suggestion is to have half the league take their recess at the same time, with the other half at another time. The break itself has already been negotiated into the 2017–18 season, regardless of Olympic participation.

This should be seen by all parties as a good idea in an 82 game season but I could see how it wouldn't work with individual contracts with the arenas in different cities,  Might take some time to implement.  Some cities host more hockey/concerts/whatever in these arenas than others across both conferences.

Tuch called up.  hopefully he actually gets the debut and can see where he's at.  he's going to be a good one, another big body up front

Ok...I kinda thought Schroeder's play has dropped off in recent weeks.
could be him too, he's always just a spare part.  but he played well last night and moved up in the lineup while Coyle moved down and is in a big slump.  no injuries that are public so my guess would be him.  ever since he gave up that two on zero in overtime he can't even handle a puck.

Not against trading Stepan at some point but guessing they would only do it for a cost controlled young d-man.

he makes some good points.
On Datsyuk?  I think bringing up that he played in front of Lidstrom is stupid, most of these guys had good to great teammates.  If you look at only points then yes, Datsyuk is going to come up on the shorter end.  Bag on the Selke, but his back checking was on another level in his prime, he did a lot of things that weren't on the score sheet.

Borderline sure, but it isn't like it is a big travesty that he made it and a guy like Chara did not.

The Colorado Avalanche have claimed Mark Barberio off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens.

Throw some crap on the wall and hopefully they stick.  Nieto has been decent, hopefully Barberio can be an improvement over Gelinas...OMG WE SUCK!!!!

no, not really that one.

but it does seem strange to include the Chicago guys while leaving out the players he mentioned.

Modano was a terrible pick.

I love Datsyuk but think he's comparable to Toews as players who are better than their stats indicate.

Really don't understand Hakstol lineup decisions.  Playing a speed team and sit Ghost and Konecny.

I get that Ghost has made some mistakes. I never see MacDonald or his favorite VandeVelde benched for their mistakrs.

Agree on Modano, he is in because he's American imo.

It's been hard to watch coming from such a solid player earlier this year. Wouldn't at all be surprised if they sat Coyle so he finds his confidence again.

Christo,

Assessment on the Blackhawks heading into the second half? I haven't watched much of them but the talent alone seems poised for a resurgence.

Need some help. Some young guys are making strides. But they need more experience up front to make a real run at it.

They'll be fine. I think they need some consistency, especially in the top lines but the kids are doing fine and will continue to grow.
