****OFFICIAL 2008 Washington Redskins Thread**** (1 Viewer)

I'm really not sure why you didn't go with the :( on that one.
Well, you can only post so many smilies in one post. I really feel like this guy :bag: But seriously, what the f is Vinny doing? I guess Dannyboy is still the GM and Vinny is the racquet ball partner.
Andy and Steve discussed this yesterday. Andy was saying most people put about as much prep into a show as the length of the show. So, since Vinny is doing 2 2-hour shows, he'll need to do at least 4 hours of prep each week. That means 8 hours per week are dedicated to a radio show and not improving the team.Plus, the show is prolly going to suxor. Maybe we'll get a few good explanations for something, but it will most likely just be 4 hours of positive spin. They could lose 50-0 and I doubt Vinny will go on and say anything negative.
The way "real" teams do this is they have their coach/GM/star player on for an hour each week getting interviewed or taking calls. This is pretty stupid and says all the wrong things about the team's priorities.
Or maybe Vinny doesn't play as large a role as we were previously led to believe?
I don't believe that's the case given this past offseason, but what it certainly does imply is that being GM of the Washington Redskins is not a full time job. Vinny's known for evaluation of college players, and this draft had his handwriting all over it. I like what he did in the draft. To be honest, because of the rarity of trades in the NFL, I could actually envision February through April leading up to the draft and the UDFA signing perioed, and the general FA period, being more involved for a GM than September. It's not MLB, but still. Like I said it sends the wrong message.

So did anybody listen to Vinny today or doesn't his show start until next week?
I think it was supposed to start today.
it started. I heard a few minutes of it. A caller asked Vinny if they were going to cut Jansen and he gave a bull$4it answer. To his credit, George Michael busted him on it. Then Vinny said, no, Jansen is important bla bla bla.
Oh yeah, I forgot George Michael was cohosting. :gang2: :lmao:

Vinnie works overtime, man. There's the office, the racketball, the sleepovers.......

Vinnie doesn't sleep. he was major coke head eye balls all the time. that guy is seriously wired up on something.

Carlos Rogers finally held on to an interception!
Rogers makes a next to impossible catch and run on that INT, but the next time a pass hits him in the hands, he'll drop it.And Devin Thomas, will you PLEASE learn how to push-off in a subtle way?And Stephon Heyer...not much can be said about his penalty that cost them the TD in the 4th quarter that would have salted the game away.

And Stephon Heyer...not much can be said about his penalty that cost them the TD in the 4th quarter that would have salted the game away.
I didn't see what the big deal was. It's not Heyer's fault Dockett started walking and wasn't looking. The play was nowhere near over.

Beautiful game. The Arizona approach (heavy on the run) really surprised me, since I was cringing at the thought of Rogers or Smoot matched up in single coverage on Fitzgerald. Admittedly they let Edge look five years younger, but it was pretty classic "bend don't break stuff".

OK, I thought the keys to the game would be Warner turnovers and the Skins running game. The run game didn't work tremendously, but it was solid - Portis got bottled up on a lot of carries, but Betts draws and Campbell scrambles worked pretty well. Once again, the Skins won the turnover battle - that's three weeks without one, kind of scary/impressive. Warner only had one mistake, but it was the play of the game - the tipped interception run back 40 yards by Rogers.

In retrospect, the part of the game that really was impressive to me was Zorn's playcalling. The reverse to Thomas, the Randle El pass off the reverse, the flanker screen for the TD to Moss, the play that got Thomas wide open for the long TD that got called back - very inventive, and everything he tried that was tricky WORKED. They had a couple of bad penalties, and one confusion on Special Teams, but overall they team looks in control, is not beating themselves, and is solid but diverse on offense. Well, at least when they get to play Zona and the 'Aints.

Wow...it's Dallas week now! And it means something! Who thinks the Skins can pull off the big upset down in big D? And how long until we hear from "Horny for Zorny" poster??

I almost went to the game thread with this, but on the play before, Portis and Dockett went face-to-face, talking a lot of smack (it was a Portis run that DD stuffed). I followed Portis on the next snap - the long ball to Thomas - and CP just exploded into DD after a play action fake. It was violent. I think #74 was helping out his pal, albeit a little too late. Trench warfare.

I'm not the specific "Cow pied" guy in question.......however, I still wanted to say:

Nice win.

I'm looking forward to Wash-Dallas week. Always fun.

Dockett was a little dirty twice, that I saw, with Portis. On one play, Dockett held Portis around the neck/head to the ground and waited for a second on the ground before letting go. On another play, Dockett came in just a tad late head-first while Portis was on the ground. After both plays, Portis got up in Dockett's face. And, I don't get the "albeit a little too late" comment. When Heyer hit Dockett, Campbell was just letting go of the ball. I heard Heyer hit Dockett in the head, but I didn't see it that way (maybe I'll rewatch it). Dockett let up (maybe because he thought the play was over) while play was still going on and he got drilled. I don't think there should a rule saying you can't lay someone out who is just walking around and not participating in the play.

It occurs to me that Dallas' Achilles heel on defense may be what it has been in the past. The Eagles with Desean Jackson lit the 'boys up for almost 40 points at Dallas, and the Campbell-to-Moss connection is alive and well with Moss fully healthy. I'm looking forward to watching that particular matchup. I'm also feeling very fortunate that our defensive secondary is fully healthy because we've seen how painful it can be versus Romo, TO, and Witten when they aren't. I think this is going to be a fun game . . . at least I hope it is.

Starting left guard Kyle Kosier re-injured his foot. Dallas may have to go back to Cory Proctor. Philly was able to get some pressure from stunts at Proctor who was slow at times picking this up.

Interesting. Taking a cue from the Giants the 'Skins have been rotating a lot of their DL's, and playing quicker, smaller pass rushing types on 3rd downs, like Demetric Evans, Erasmus James, Chris Wilson and Rob Jackson. None of those guys are the caliber of Justin Tuck, and they've not been showing up in the stats at the end of the game, but they've been getting nice pressure and influencing some pass plays. I'm sure Blache will try to attack that spot if it's a problem for the Cowboys, especially with Taylor out.

I'm guessing a permanent change from Doughty to Horton will come soon, based on his play last week and, from this week, this situation:

Reed Doughty had been caught too shallow on the previous series. He tried to jump a route and misread the play ("I was exposed," he said), so Blache benched him for the duration of the game, using Springs at strong safety for a few plays and turning to Horton in the nickel package.

let's trade him to the Bears for a 7th

Some pretty funny quotes from Wash Post blogs:

Jim Zorn, on the personal foul called on Stephon Heyer: I didn't even know it was him. I had to gear up for the next call.... If I was ranting and raving--"Who is it, I want to rip him!"--then I don't have the next call. Who cares? It's 1st and 20, now what do we do. Do you see what I mean?... I blocked everything else out. I didn't find until I got in here and I was walking into this room that it was Adam Heyer. That's the truth. I mean, Stephon Heyer. I keep calling him Adam Heyer, I know a guy named Adam Heyer.Jason Taylor, on Dallas week: I've heard enough about it. And I'm not a big Cowboys fan anyway, so this is right up my alley. Just never been. I grew up a Pittsburgh Steeler fan, and we don't like the Cowboys, period. And there are other reasons I don't need to talk about. I'm a Redskin now, so I definitely don't like them even more.Chris Cooley, on his plans one week after penis-gate: You know what, tonight is a relaxed night. I'm going home, I've got four friends from high school that played football in high school with me, all Mormon dudes, all coming out to my house with my family. We'll probably get out like Uno or Pictionary, we'll have some intense games.Jim Zorn, on Jason Campbell: I had fumbling of the mouth on one call, and he held his hand up--"just be quiet coach, I've got it." Those kind of things happen a little bit, and he was very mature about all the things he did....He had great vision down the field to throw to Devin Thomas for a huge score. If we don't get the personal foul, I mean, you know, we're all dancing a jig.

JLC said Horton had good coverage on Fitz on a shorter route on Warner's INT.

OK, watched this again last night. The play where Dockett held onto Portis around the neck for an extra second was the play before the Heyer penalty. On the next play, it was play-action to Portis. Portis went straight for Dockett and laid into him. Portis was then clearly jawing with Dockett. I think Dockett was probably talking back and that's why he was just walking instead of being part of the play. Well, unfortunately for Dockett, Heyer was right next to them and drilled him. Then Portis was jumping up and down like a little kid on Christmas morning.Good stuff.

The LaCanfora v. Cerrato/Snyder fued gets some added drama. Apparently JLC called the NFL looking for clarification on the rules for tampering and cited Cerrato talking on the radio about Lane Kiffin as a possible example of tampering.

I know they each like taking their shots at each other, but JLC's call to the NFL seems a little over the top. As if he hadn't already burned enough bridges over at Redskins Park.

JLC crossed the line there, and his editor going to bat for him on this was lame. This is an example of a reporter making himself part of the story. Yeah, yeah, Jason, you were just asking an innocent question (that you could have researched and answered on your own by looking up the rule), not tipping off the NFL about a violation. Sure. ;)

It's no secret that the WaPo is looking for as much dirt on the Skins as possible. The last sentence of that blog post is telling:
I asked La Canfora if he would discuss the issue with me, but he couldn’t comment until he had spoken to his editors at the Post.
Oh, and the most disturbing thing in that whole blog post was this:
I read on profootballtalk about him going to Syracuse.
;) @ Vinny reading PFT.

I read on profootballtalk about him going to Syracuse.
:lmao: @ Vinny reading PFT.
My impression is that PFT is to the NFL like Drudge is to politicos. Everyone reads it for rumors, etc. Don't forget that Florio has some nice inside connections with the NFL.
Yeah, I guess. I just found it funny. I just never pictured an NFL Exec sitting around reading NFL rumor web sites. Then again, I never pictured one doing 2 2-hour radio shows each week.I can't wait for: "I read on footballguys..."

Redskins Insider speculating that Fincher may be cut.

What would they be signing? WR?
I doubt it, unless there's some injury issue there I'm not aware of. The WR corps is as healthy now as it has been since the start of training camp.My guess is it's another LB who can do more for them than Fincher can.
Bringing Gatewood up off the PS?What street FA LB would they be able to bring in that could do more than Fincher?

ETA: Randall Godfrey, Warrick Holdman and Lemar Marshall are all FAs. :lmao:

;)I can't tell you how many times I laughed out loud yesterday reading that.

Oops. Fincher not cut; Gatewood is. WaPo agrees with TB. LB likely to be added.

O'Halloran, at the Times, has been tracking the offensive formations Zorn is using. Here's the info for week 3.

Here's the breakdown on personnel groupings against Arizona.

2 WR/2 RB/1 TE: 20 of 64 snaps

3 WR/1 RB/1 TE: 16 of 64 snaps

3 WR/2 RB: 8 of 64 snaps

2 WR/1 RB/2 TE: 7 of 64 snaps

4 WR/1 RB: 5 of 64 snaps

4 WR/1 TE: 5 of 64 snaps

1 WR/2 RB/1 TE: 1 of 64 snaps

5 WR: 1 of 64 snaps

2 RB/3 TE: 1 of 64 snaps

That's cool info. I'd expect to see more of the multiple TE sets once Davis gets up to speed.

That formation info is interesting. One thing I thought I noticed, especially in the red zone, Zorn tends to call passes from the "heavy" formations (multiple TEs, multiple RBs) and runs from the spread.

It's crazy. It's almost as if he doesn't want the defense to know what's coming! Dude's an animal!

:lmao: Pretty sure it's been mentioned recently (possibly even by TB), but the play calling has been very good these past two games. Especially in regards to adjusting in game. I'm almost ready to believe that in a season or two the terms "Jim Zorn" and "offensive genius" are going to be commonly found next to each other.

Oh...you mean he's being deceptive? Wow, I never considered that...But...if he does the opposite of the formation all the time, is it still being deceptive? Oh, now I'm all confused...

5 WR: 1 of 64 snaps
I don't think that one is right. I think they only dressed 4 WRs with Kelly inactive. Portis was lined up out wide a couple times. Maybe he mistakenly thought there was a 5th WR on one play?
I think he's saying the formation was a 5 "WR" formation (empty backfield; 5 "receivers" along the line). Not that there were 5 players that are designated as WRs on the field at the same time. He mentions later in that post that Portis lined up as a WR a few times.ETA: Another example is that in the 2RB/3TE set, Lorenzo Alexander was one of the "TE"s.
