****OFFICIAL 2009 Off Season Washington Redskins Thread**** (1 Viewer)

So wait- in one calendar year we used two high draft picks on DL's? :jawdrop:
Is this considered a high pick? This means they lose their 3rd next year, right? When trading picks, you usually have to give up something a round higher the following year to get a certain pick in the current year. So, this could actually be looked at as a 4th round pick this year since they used their 3rd round pick from next year?

It's being reported that we took Kentucky DE Jeremy Jarmon in the 3rd Round of today's NFL Supplemental Draft...

You all know how much of a cynical pessimist I am by now, but this...this is GREAT NEWS, if true!!!

Kid got a raw deal from the NCAA, but having gone through Spring Practice before being suspended for 2009, he's gotta be in roughly the same degree of 'football shape' as these guys coming out of OTA's/minicamp...

Say what you will about Renaldo Wynn, the guy was a Starter-Caliber DE for several years, and Philip Daniels is a Meast...this kid is going to get tutored by some quality vets right out of the box, without having the world of expectations placed on him, and I like that. He's got quality run-stopping skills to build on, which is nice...

The D just keeps getting better!

Very, very pleased!
Their is and will only ever be one Meast...but I agree great pickup. Fits perfectly into the scheme Greg is trying to run. Also I think this speaks volumes on how well Orakpo is adjusting to the SAM position.

I really like this move. Also, Adam Schefter is reporting that the Lions submitted their 4th round pick for Jarmon, so the FO did an outstanding job using the lowest pick possible to acquire him.
From Schefter's twitter....
My understanding -- unconfirmed -- is the other teams to put in 4th-round claims for Jeremy Jarmon were Eagles, Bucs, Saints, Lions, Pats.
I don't know much of anything about this guy, but it makes me feel good knowing that the Pats, Eagles and Lions are teams that were after him.

I agree. Having the Pats offer a 4th makes me feel really good about this. As long as it isn't drafting WRs, the Pats know what they are doing.

Andy Polian and Steve Czaban announced on the radio that 2 weeks from today they will be broadcasting live from Redskin training camp.

"High" is in the eye of the beholder, and my eyes have typically only seen 5th rounders or later used on DL's by this team going back almost 20 years, so yeah, a third round supplemental pick though it was, it was "high" in my book. Jarmon's somewhat of a project presently. Maybe he'll contribute a little in the rotation by late in the 2009 season, but the real test will be whether he can replace Wynn and Daniels as the LDE on 1st downs with Orakpo lined up outside of him, and also perhaps whether he can move inside to DT next to Haynesworth on passing downs. I'm hopeful that he can make up for our inability to draft DE Lawrence Jackson (Seahawks) a year ago.

Cerrato said they had a 2nd round grade on him, and that's where they believed he would be drafted if he were in next year's draft, instead of the 2009 supplemental. He also went on to say that they expect him to contribute immediately on special teams, since he has good speed (4.79 in 40).So essentially, the Skins used this year's 1st rounder and next year's 3rd rounder to secure the DE's of the future, and Orakpo should at minimum have an immediate impact as a pass rusher on passing downs. The way I look at it, the Skins were able to get a 2nd round talent and have him on the team for an entire year, before having to surrender next year's 3rd round pick. This was a fantastic move, imo.In summary, I agree with TBell's assessment that a 3rd round supplemental pick is a "high pick," because in most cases the player drafted would be going at least a round higher if he were to play another year in college and enter the next draft.

and I was just about to launch the Alex Buzzbe fan club

good to see an infusion of youth to the DE position. If it gets one trick pony Andre Carter closer to 'off-the-roster' status, it's a good move.

Andre Carter is a good complimentary DE, meaning that like a #2 WR he can be useful if he has a good player opposite him. By himself, however, he's not any good at making plays. There's a place for such guys on the roster, and the "problem with Carter" hasn't so much been Carter as the team's failure to get enough talent around him on the DL. That seems to finally be changing.

Wouldn't it be great someday to turn on a Skins game and just assume the other team will have trouble with our D-line? Instead of assuming our D-line will be invisible all game?

I think it's getting closer to that.

Is there anything Andy and Steve CAN'T be negative about? They've spent time the last couple days complaining about Danny and Vinny taking recruits out to dinner.

Question: Do you foresee Devin Thomas or Malcolm Kelly overtaking Antwaan Randle El as the starter opposite Santana Moss? That would move Randle El to the position that he excelled at with the Steelers.

Gary: That’s up to Thomas and Kelly. They both need to play well in training camp and preseason. Randle El is a versatile wide receiver who can be effective lining up on the outside or in the slot. If Thomas and Kelly emerge, it certainly gives offensive coaches more options. It is safe to say that Thomas is ahead of Kelly at this point--he has had more playing time in the offense. Thomas was impressive in off-season work, so I expect him to step up in 2009.
Question: Gary, can you please keep us posted on Mike Williams’ continued weight loss?

Gary: Did you hear Vinny Cerrato on ESPN 980 on Thursday? He said that Williams’ weight was down to 354 pounds. That’s incredible. He has lost more than 50 pounds since mid-April. For the last month, Williams has been working out in the Arizona heat with Chris Samuels, Derrick Dockery and Stephon Heyer. His weight loss is good news for Redskins fans seeking competition at right tackle--and it is good news for Williams and his long-term health. It shows Williams’ commitment and determination to renewing his NFL career.
Question: Kareem Moore played in the Eagles game and defensive coordinator Greg Blache moved LaRon Landry up to play a “rover”-type position. Moore stayed back and played the “angel” position and did a solid job. Can we expect to see that look more in the upcoming year?

null

Gary: Defensive coaches want to move Landry around and give him more opportunities to make plays. They want to move him closer to the line of scrimmage so that he can blitz quarterbacks--or at least give the impression that he could blitz. This would give the Redskins more options and it would give offensive coordinators another look with which to prepare. Moore could come in on passing downs, with Landry moving from free to strong safety. He impressed coaches in his limited playing time last season and could be used in more packages in 2009.

not sure what "recruits" you're talking about - are these potential free agents? hadn't heard anything about this. Hope they're taking Pete Kendall to Morton's.dgreen, perhaps you'd be more comfortable listening to Larry Michael and Blogger Matt Terl? I just watched the last 10 mins of Redskin Nation on Comcast  and those two would never question the FO.

I don't hear much from my friends and acquaintances involved with the 'skins Organization these days - they're far too busy with preparations for Training Camp, etc., but one of them was given Mike Williams as his pet project to get his weight down and into playing shape - certainly looks like he's been getting the job done!

I may or may not have mentioned this before, but from what I understand, one of the things Dockery was telling the 'skins Brass about Williams was that his weight gain was connected to his depression regarding his injuries and dropoff, but that he was hitting the gym as often as he was hitting the buffet, and as the Training Staff shed the pounds from him, they were pretty impressed with the muscle mass hiding underneath all the fat, and they've always been optimistic about his technique, so who knows...it would be SUCH a bonus (and a relief) if we come out of Training Camp with a reasonable amount of depth on both Lines...it would be almost as if we had a real football Program in place!

Imagine that...

We love to rag on the Front Office, but if these moves work out, the Front Office will be looking good. Adding Dockery and Williams to the OL and Haynesworth, Orakpo, and Jarmon to the DL can potentially strengthen two very big weaknesses of the team.Of course, things always look the best in the off season.

If Williams ends up legitimately (because he earns it, not due to injury) starting for us for an extended period of time, his signing will be an absolute coup and he's the frontrunner for comeback player of the year. I'm still of the mindset that, while it's a nice story and I'm happy for the guy, I'll believe that when I see it. We're still way ahead if he is "only" quality depth for us. Meanwhile that defensive front has me excited long term for the first time in a long, long time.

Ah, the OffSeason...where we always win! Sad, but true...Not only the guys you mentioned, but Rinehart, Heyer, Devin Clark and Jeremy Bridges all appear to be NFL Roster-worthy, at least...Samuels / Dockery / Rabach / Thomas / Heyer(?) + DClark, Rinehart Bridges, Williams...we've made do with a lot worse than that over the last 5 or so years. Frankly, even being able to type that many names pretty much stuns me......if what I'm hearing about Fred Davis basically being trained to be an extra OL, that makes 10.Marko Mitchell is an very intriguing prospect from this year's Draft.I think they've got 15 D-Linemen now, with the addition of Jarmon, and when I look at the list, I see 8-9 that are NFL Caliber, and I know they can't keep them all. Again, I'm stunned...Kareem Moore seems to be making himself valuable......and to top it all off, they aren't scared to put Devin Thomas on the field...finally. Wow.Quietly optimistic. Hoping 'Shh...'doesn't turn into 'Well, Shh......it', by the time the Season rolls around

PAGING FATNESS! PAGING FATNESS TO THE WHITE COURTESY PHONE!!!

Hey bud! Are you aware yet that it looks like you've been moved from the Wait List to the Active Membership of the Philly/Baltimore/Washington Area FBG's Auction League?

Please report to the Looking For Leagues Forum!

...and the rest of you - don't know how aware you are that this League exists, but a group of us started this last Year, and it was an absolute BLAST!!! We're reloading for 2009 (Draft is August 1), and still working with putting the finishing touches on the Owners Group.

Anyone interested should head over to the LFL Forum, check things out, and say hello!

Yeah, I'm aware, but I've been in touch with Fear the Turtle about it. I have to pass, basically due to time and money reasons. I wish that wasn't the case. Maybe when the recession's over things'll be different.

Ugh. Lavar and Dukes will be horrible.
So far, I give Lavar and Chad Dukes a B. The little I've listened to their show this week, they've been entertaining. I think they have potential. But, they take commercials way too often and the show ends at 6.

Kevin Barnes signed.

That gives them just over a week to get Orakpo and Jarmon in on time. I can't imagine Jarmon's being difficult to get done. And, I think I heard Orakpo's agent has a lot of guys in the same draft area (picks 12-18), so they should all happen within a few days of each other.

whoever comes on at 7pm sounds like Kermit the Frog. yo kermit: that nervous laughter after your not-funny commentary will cause me to turn the dial to NPR's Fresh Air.

Yeah, I heard a couple minutes of that the other night. I'm not a fan of one-man shows. Who wants to hear one dude talk to themselves for a couple hours, especially when his voice is annoying? And from 6-7 to they replay an hour of The Junkies? I guess I'm ok with that if it's not the hour I heard in the morning, but radio programming can be so stupid sometimes. "Hey, we have an hour to fill. Let's just replay something from 12 hours ago!"

Any thoughts about the Redskins trying to sign Michael Vick? I was thinking about this. His talent is great. He is certainly an upgrade over Todd Collins. And if Campbell is not here next year, Vick could have a year in Zorn's offense (assuming Zorn is still here) before becoming a starter again.

Or does signing Vick split the team like Jeff George did early in the Snyder era?

Hell no to Vick. That would be a true sign of desperation. They'd be better off throwing Colt in there and see what happens.

I can't think of a worse city for a guy engaged in dog fighting to play than the Capitol, can you?

I've said before that I'd have no problem with a one-year minimum contract for Vick. Throw him out there5 or 6 times a game in the wildcat.

I don't know what Vick would add, even as a backup. It's not like the Redskin offense is built around QB running & mobility. I'm ok with Collins as backup.

Jason Reid gets LaCanfora's job at the Washington Post

Good choice, he's been covering the Redskins for a couple years now.

Matt Vita, the Post's new sports editor, has entrusted me with one of the most important jobs on our staff. His confidence in me means a lot. Most of all, however, I move into this new role with a feeling of responsibility because of all of you. When I accepted an offer to join The Post, Emilio said to me, "Get ready. You've never done anything like covering the Skins for The Washington Post." I had done a bunch of big stuff in L.A., so I thought Emilio was just getting a little carried away. I quickly learned, though, that this fan base is unlike any I had previously encountered.
How long until he's hated at Extremeskins?
