This is exactly how I felt at 5 PM yesterday. Still amazed that anyone could place any blame on Vick...he was pretty clearly the Eagles best player yesterday. But I took a step back and looked not at OUR record, but at the record of the teams that beat us. Throw out St. Louis, and that's a heck of a stretch of rough teams for a defense that has had zero time to gel with a dozen new parts including DC.I'm still pissed off and dissapointed, but I'm pretty sure we're over-reacting just a little. Win this week, use the bye to get better organized on Defense, and this team could easily make a run to the playoffs. As far as the stats go...they're misleading as all heck...tired of hearing those kinds of #s. BAD teams lose lots of games. GOOD teams win lots of games...but good and bad teams both have unusual strings of wins or losses when they face unusually strong or weak strings of opponents. This is EXACTLY the kind of team that typically overcomes "the (bogus)odds". Philly's chances of making the playoffs are significantly higher than 5%. The Luck talk is ludicrous.Look, I know Andy is loyal and ultimately it was his call but at this point, if he doesn't "re-assign" Castillo then this could very well be the last year of the Reid regime. I've always thought Reid was teflon coated and would never be on the hot seat until he wanted to leave, but now I can't see how he's not.He needs to take dramatic action. Our chances at the playoffs -- at least statistically -- are remote. So it's time to start figuring out if we just spent boatloads of money for NOTHING. Let's remember that a lot of the "Dream Team" were on one-year deals (or deals that were effectively structured to be one-year deals). And many of these guys came to Philly on a bet they would win big. So this team is going to look significantly different in 2012 potentially. We've also got to decide about DJax. He's a talent, no question. But he's not an all around top tier receiver. He's not in the AJ, Megatron, Roddy, etc.. camp. He's not as valuable as someone like Mike Wallace who has the same crazy deep speed but has grown his game in other ways. DJax is a guy I want to have, but not at an exorbitant price. And if we're being really honest with ourselves, do we feel great about Mike Vick? I can't say it's ALL his fault. The line is a mess, the receivers are turning the ball over in inexplicable ways, but isn't this the Vick we all worried about? Isn't this the gunslinger who puts himself in harms way and puts up gaudy stats but doesn't win against good teams? Isn't this EXACTLY the guy we always thought he was? I'll tell you what, based solely on what we've seen so far (assuming no improvement from here on out)...We could be in line for Andrew Luck playing for whatever offensive coordinator Bill Cowher brings with him next year. :(
I agree with your last few sentences. It FEELS like a colossal disappointment, but in the NFL you're not dead and buried until you're officially eliminated. As you said, we win against Washington this week and then USUALLY we're money off our bye, we could be back to 3-4 and then who knows?Basically we're either this year's version of the Chargers, or our goose is cooked. Difference, obviously, is that the Chargers were playing GOOD defense but just making inopportune gaffes. We're playing historically horrendous defense AND making inopportune gaffes. This is exactly how I felt at 5 PM yesterday. And yet...we're losing one score games to playoff caliber teams. As another poster above said...we were supposed to be a SB contender, not just a playoff contender. He's right in that regard....but we are still a playoff contender, and teams have gotten hot and made improbable runs before once they made the dance. We need to take a deep breathe. Things are bad, but not nearly as bad as they seem with one glance at the record. This team could fold and go 6 - 10. With no real leaders (especially on Defense), that's possible. I'm NOT saying this team will make the playoffs. But they could improve to just average on defense, hold on to the ball a little better, and go 10 - 6 just as easily.Difference, obviously, is that the Chargers were playing GOOD defense but just making inopportune gaffes. We're playing historically horrendous defense AND making inopportune gaffes.
They never bothered to address the problems they had last season. No OBP type hitting or bench. Pitching didnt lose the Giants series last year & it didn't lose this series. They been offensively crap since september ( hugh slump ) and have been streaky all season. Howard has been playing hurt most the year ( hits ankle/foot ) so that took away from some of his power. Then you had Charlie sticking with slumping players during the year & more importantly, during the playoffs, that is what killed it. Their top LHB option off the bench was a guy who needs to be pinch ran for & can't field because he has been needing hip surgery since the ASB ( Gload ). Ibanez Polly & Cooch went like 6 for 50 something in that series. Played every inning. THAT is the coaches fault. Manual is known to favor vets highly & will keep with slumping players because he has the "hit yourself out of a slump" mentality. Also his HR or nothing hitting ways doesnt work well for a team who has 1 legit HR anymore. They honestly should have used Mayberry more that series. Would have liked to seen Martinez or someone in at 3rd. Could have bunted with them, since Polly was insanely ineffective. At least the runners would have moved over but again, that is not Charlies thing. A few of these players have been known to 'carry the team' in past seasons. Howard is a prime example. I think a few of them were pressing too much to try to do just that. ( not a big fan, think he is overrated, should be a bench coach at best next year )I know this is an eagles thread, but man what happened to the phillies? no offense at all. not one run?Ryan howard is getting worse every year and cannot hit playoff pitching. bad investment to keep him around for so long. Now hes hurt on top of that. yuck :XWhat a weekend. First Phils than Eagles. I've watched 2 regular season hockey games for the first time in about 4 years. Go Flyers. The Eagles have made me apathetic towards them. My friends and I had more fun making sarcastic comments and deciding how we would lose the game instead of rooting for a win yesterday. How did it come to this? I'm done with Andy. He's been the coach since I was a junior in High school. It's time for some new blood.
If they don't have the personnel at LB & S for the wide 9 then exactly how effective is it? Problem with the team has been shouted out by a few of us for a while now. -Relying on low talent potential late round draft picks to be effective starters. -Poor talent evaluations pertaining to drafting.-A no defensive experienced coach as your defensive coordinator. -Poor gameplanning & playcalling ( been this way for years )-Little to no gameday adjustments. Make matters worse, Juan is just like Andy in a sense. They been around each other so long then tend to think the same way.Noticed the media is finally calling Andy out after years of riding his coattails as this excellent coach. Its nice to see that & should have been done sooner. Any other coach would have been #### canned one of the past 3 seasons. Insanity in the dictionary has a picture of Reid & the Eagles organization as its description. They are NFL pros. You don't come to the NFL to learn to tackle or the correct way to hold a football. The wide 9 looks to be extremely effective, they just don't have the LB and S personnel to run it at the moment. They will have to fix that in the next offseason or change the scheme.I'm not any kind of football expert but can someone confirm for me that when the offensive players can't hang onto the ball and the D can't tackle, doesn't that come down to coaching? This kind of stuff doesn't seem to happen to teams like the Steelers and Patriots.
It reminds me of the end of Ray Rhodes era. He had some solid years and some pretty good teams but they all just gave up in that last year. I don't think 5-11 is out of the question. This team is a whole bunch of individuals. Babin saying he doesn't care about stopping the run cause he wants his sacks. Vick, Desean and shady laughin it up on the sidelines while they are getting smoked. I think Andy's lost the team. They are not listening to Castillo and by entension Reid. This team is worse than the cowboys from last year. They could at least put some of the blame on injuries. We need a new look. This team is not winning the division, they are too fundamentally ######ed. They are inept, unmotivated, and just down right don't give a *choose your expletive*. I'm astounded how bad this team is, just laughable. And Reid almost walking off from the press conference and telling the guys to get with it, MAYBE YOU NEED TO GET WITH IT!!! Sadly they probably will win enough games to probably save Reid's job for another year but I am quickly getting to the point where I hope to see them keep losing so they can finally send Reid packing. I'm done, it's been 12 years, it isn't going to happen with this guy.
Unfortunately it looks like they are next to go down the tubes. They need to inject some new younger offensive talent. Utley and Howard are in the Twilight of there careers. Howard though nufortunately is signed for 5 more years at 25 mill per year clip and now with only one foot. Such a horrible contract.I know this is an eagles thread, but man what happened to the phillies? no offense at all. not one run?Ryan howard is getting worse every year and cannot hit playoff pitching. bad investment to keep him around for so long. Now hes hurt on top of that. yuck :XWhat a weekend. First Phils than Eagles. I've watched 2 regular season hockey games for the first time in about 4 years. Go Flyers. That says it all for me and I was once the “be careful what you wish for” guy. Like McNabb, I wouldnt kick him on the way out but enough is enough. And you forgot New England...eagles schedule certainly doesn't look any better going forward...2 games vs Dallas, 2 vs Washington. Could easily go 1-3 or 2-2 in those.Bears? Not going to be easy, and they easily beat us last year.Cardinals? Probably will win this, but you know Kolb will be fired up.@Miami should be a win.@Seattle? Honestly don't know. Should win, but Lynch could be running all day long. Seattle scored twice as many points against the Giants as we did. what does that say about us?A 5-11 season is a real possibility.
8 million posts and you HONESTLY think that its a possibility we win less games then any other team in the nfl? C'mon man! I know you said with no improvement, but we are 3 plays away from being 4-1. Seems like no bounces are going our way and everything that could go right for the other team does. Even when we get a huge pick to end the half, its no points. What are these bad breaks you're talking about? The pick to end the half and no points isn't a bad break, it's bad (stupid) football. The interceptions and fumbles weren't bad breaks, it's bad football. The porous defense isn't a bad break, it's bad football.I do agree that even with the flaws, this team could be undefeated right now. But the reality is they aren't, not because of bad breaks but stupid mistakes, either player or coaching. The question is, do you think those mistakes can be fixed in the next week or so? Right now, the money is on no, but hey, anything can happen.8 million posts and you HONESTLY think that its a possibility we win less games then any other team in the nfl? C'mon man! article on profootballtalk looks at some possible guys to bring in as a consultant: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/10/10/report-eagles-will-consider-bringing-in-a-defensive-consultant/They mention a guy I would do backflips if they brought in, Chuck Cecil. He ran a 4-3 in Tennessee last year, and I think he would help this defense immensely. if it was simply bringing in a little swagger, and not this nose in the air swagger where th4e Eagles think they are much better then everybody else, but the type of swagger this defense has not had since Dawkins was here. Of course Chuck Cecil wouldn't be on the field, but i remember hearing from the guys in Tennessee last year that he was the kind of coach you wanted to play your hardest for. With the Eagles having Washburn coaching the DL, it could make a lot of sense to bring him in. I am not sure he is the defensive consultant role, but I would feel much better if he were brought in to helpMNF halftime report, Chris Mortensen reporting Reid and the front office are meeting to discuss bringing in a defensive consultant after the bye.
At least this is a good start...but why wait until after the bye? Why not get their live eyes in on a game and see it up close and personal. Worst thing is if this is just a tease and they say "well, we discussed it but we're good...we just need to do a better job of putting guys in a good position to make plays."MNF halftime report, Chris Mortensen reporting Reid and the front office are meeting to discuss bringing in a defensive consultant after the bye.

A lot of us are.Scared of what it might be like without Reid? Right now I'm scared that they turn things around enough where it saves Reid's job.
I think this is the most depressing thing right now. Over the years, despite his flaws and flashes of in-game stupidity that would cost games, he would turn the team around and get in the playoffs. He gave us hope. This year is the first for me where I completely agree with calling for his head, and there's no going back. What makes it depressing is watching the Bills game, when they started coming back, while I was rooting for them, on the inside I was hoping they wouldn't because it would give everyone false hope and keep Reid around another year. I'd rather they keep stinking this year to improve the team long term by changing coaches.A lot of us are.Scared of what it might be like without Reid? They been around each other so long then tend to think the same way.Noticed the media is finally calling Andy out after years of riding his coattails as this excellent coach. Its nice to see that & should have been done sooner. Any other coach would have been #### canned one of the past 3 seasons. Insanity in the dictionary has a picture of Reid & the Eagles organization as its description.
Again, if you don't have the personnel then how effective is it really? Non-effective.But this is Reid, it is how he is. Instead of changing it up to fit the players he has to make things works, he will keep driving that square peg into a round hole. It's effective from the perspective that it gets pressure on the QB from the front 4 without blitzing every other down.If they don't have the personnel at LB & S for the wide 9 then exactly how effective is it? This is where you give Jeff Fisher a blank check and have him fill out the rest!'modogg said:article on profootballtalk looks at some possible guys to bring in as a consultant: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/10/10/report-eagles-will-consider-bringing-in-a-defensive-consultant/They mention a guy I would do backflips if they brought in, Chuck Cecil. I am not sure he is the defensive consultant role, but I would feel much better if he were brought in to help'Amused to Death said:MNF halftime report, Chris Mortensen reporting Reid and the front office are meeting to discuss bringing in a defensive consultant after the bye.

Pretty general replay, don't you think?I'm sure most (if not all Eagle fans) who have watched them can tell what they need.Personel wise- LBers (3 of them), Safties (2 of them) and DT (At least one of them..maybe 2 for depth)Coaching wise- Experiance and someone with these things called balls....like the ones Jim Johnson had...Jim Johnson's ultimately had a pretty effective defense, but when it was implemented in 1999 they didn't have all the personnel to run it. It took a year. It's a process, they have to see what they have, with what they have, and then they can see what they need.

Let's go with the assumption that Mort is correct in reporting the Eagles actually discussed the possibility (something the team doesn't dispute). That means 1 of 2 things happened: Andy went to the front office, recognizing Juan's in over his head and needs help, and they told him no - fix your own problem. Or two, the front office asked Andy what the heck's going on here? Do you need help? and Andy stubbornly rejected it.I'm guessing number 2 is more likely.Reid already stated they are not bringing anyone in to consult the defense. Kinda seen that coming. That would be an admittance of failure on his part ( for hiring Juan ) & on Juans part as a D Coach. Couldn't see his ego bringing in a guy to consult.
Other news, they worked out a safety,

There are no "gimmes" on the schedule (they were the 9ers and Bills) but I'm most optimistic about Dallas at home (after the bye), Arizona at home and at Miami. Rest are a toss up imo.they are 1-7 i think in their last 8 games period lol. There is a chance ot beat Chicago & Arizona though.
I dont think they win the Dallas game. They have a chance at the Bears game because of the bears Oline. I think the front 4 will ravage them. There are no "gimmes" on the schedule (they were the 9ers and Bills) but I'm most optimistic about Dallas at home (after the bye), Arizona at home and at Miami. One game at a time. Lets just worry about the Washington game this week.they are 1-7 i think in their last 8 games period lol. There is a chance ot beat Chicago & Arizona though.
What the heck is Vegas looking at? I was shocked they were favored last week. Can't believe they are favored again...awesome that the line in Philly/Wash has swung to favor Philly(currently 1.5), meaning that if Philly loses this week they will be 1-5 yet will have been favored in every single game. They then play 3 straight home games(Dallas, Chicago, Arizona) so its possible that they could go 1-8 yet will have been favorites in all 9 games, lol.
