Can we call the second wild card a success? It may be slightly manufactured, but we get a nice finish in the AL. No reason we don't get something similar every year going forward from one of the two leagues.

I think it's more fun for fans, but I'm not sure if it's fairer or makes more sense. Part of the reason behind wild cards generally is to ensure that good teams who play in tough divisions could still make the playoffs. But right now there's three teams heading towards 94 or 95 win seasons that could end in a one-off playoff, i.e. that they won't make the division series and get to enjoy a prolonged playoff series, even though they were among the best teams in baseball. That kind of sucks too.

Sure, nothing's ever gonna be perfect. And there's always gonna be some sort of inequity. But I'd say that for this season, the old format would have been "fairer" than the new one, at least in the NL. The Braves should be in the NLDS, they're probably gonna have a 95ish win season. But they'll need to win a play-in game against an 87/88 win team to make the division series. Nobody with the kind of season the Braves are having has been kept out of the division series in at least 12 years, which is as far back as I had the energy to look. In fact only two teams even close- a couple AL teams with 93 wins didn't make it in the early part of the last decade.

The Orioles are reportedly upset about the "mailing it in" quality of lineup that Boston trotted out in their Monday night loss to the Yanks -- a loss that helped drop Baltimore to one game back with two to play. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes:

According to a major league source, Orioles folks weren't thrilled to see the Red Sox lineup Monday night. Dustin Pedroia was out with a jammed left finger and Jacoby Ellsbury, who has been nursing a lat strain, also was held out against Sabathia. "The Yankees have five potential Hall of Famers at the top of their order. The Red Sox have guys who don't even know where the Hall of Fame is."

It should be noted that Pedroia's absence was fully justified, as his finger turned out to be broken (an injury he suffered, coincidentally, against the Orioles on Sunday).

Yanks get best record and play the wildcard I thought, Oakland the 2 seed, Detroit the 3. Certainly if Texas wins the wildcard but I thought I heard that you can play division on division now in the first round.

It's now being reported R.A Dickey pitched with a torn abdominal muscle since April. He'll be undergoing surgery in about 2 weeks.

56-26 from July 1st on is just unreal. Congrats.The Rangers haven't melted down like the Red Sox and Braves did in the final month last year, but they are struggling right now. Losing the division would require their 9th loss in the final 13 games.

The sun and wind seem to be wreaking havoc on the field today. Wish this had been a night game but mother nature sure is making this exciting.

Lead was never more than 6.5. It's just they have been in first since game four.

I read the lead over Oakland was 13 games, 5 game lead on September 24.:oof: all around here! Enormous choke, I'll be curious to see how Texas gets off the matt for the wildcard game.
