just what kind of :censored: is going on over there??

Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier announced Wednesday that Freeman had suffered a concussion last Monday, and if Freeman can't play this Sunday, the team will start Christian Ponder at quarterback.

The news came as a surprise, because even though Freeman was brutal in his Vikings debut vs. the Giants -- he went 20 of 53 for 193 yards and an interception -- we don't recall any head shots during the game that could have caused the head injury. Plus, Frazier already had announced that Freeman would start this week vs. the Packers.

Frazier said Freeman didn't say anything about his symptoms until Tuesday.

You'd think, BEFORE you announce who the starter is going to be, you'd at least speak to your QB ..

Seriously.. did Frazier and the coaching staff have no communication with Freeman from Quarter 3 until Tuesday???

Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder "most likely" will start Sunday night's game against the Green Bay Packers because Josh Freeman has concussion-like symptoms, coach Leslie Frazier said Wednesday.

"Obviously, he won't be able to practice (Wednesday). He loses (Wednesday) and when you consider the amount of time, it's probably going to be difficult (for Freeman to play Sunday). And also looking at the history of guys on a short week that at least got cleared, we're going proceed as if he's not going to make it."

I can see it now.. Ponder will do just enough( one or two turnovers, a TD or 2, 200 yards) that they will decide to stick with him as the starter..

So we get to look forward to weekly news conferences of Fraizer telling us how good Ponder is and that until something changes he is the Viking Starting QB. Then when he stinks it up again, as we know he will, his ribs, or a hang nail will interfere with him practicing returning us back to Freeman... :wall:

 
Do any of the Minny homers hear the news of AP dealing with an injury? First I heard was in Blooms Sell Article.........is this just fodder to him not getting carries/performing last week? or is there something here? I didnt see anything when I watched replays of the game to see he was hurting.

He was limited in practice last week with a hamstring issue. They said he injured it earlier in the year and they were being cautious, but I thought he was clearly hampered by it.

There was one play where he caught a dump off pass moving to his left and had nothing by daylight all the way down the sideline. Just had to beat the LBer to the corner. Adrian Peterson at 100% scores a TD on that play every single time. This week he was pushed out of bounds and was clearly frustrated with himself for it.

ETA: I don't know if that had anything to do with his lack of carries the last 2 weeks though.

He only got into the open field a few times, so it was hard to see much. He said he was at 95%. I can recall him pulling up a little gingerly on one of his receptions but that was about it. I don't think it really slowed him down and it shouldn't be a concern moving forward.

 
Seems like a circus, but oh well. Doesn't much matter to me the reason is for sitting Freeman - he shouldn't have been out there yet to begin with to accomplish what the team needed to see out of him sometime in 2013. IMHO, they could put Montana behind that OL and get the same performance we've seen from all of our QBs. That's not to be mistaken for an endorsement of Ponder, or fools hope that maybe he has an excuse for his lack of performance these past 3 years. Ponder clearly has no deep ball (other than close your eyes and heave) and doesn't throw accurate or tight enough for the NFL. He's proven that despite the failed OL. Will be interesting to see Ponder against Green Bay though, since everyone pointed to his triumph in week 17 last year as indication he had progressed.

 
Too soon to debate who would look best in Purple next year...Bridgewater, Mariota, Hundley, Manziel?

Who will be back on Defense next year besides Robison, Griffin, Floyd, Greenway, Rhodes and Smith?

Who do we want in charge on the sidelines, Sumlin, David Shaw, recycled NFL coach?

I'd go Cowher, Dungy &maybe Gruden in that order.. would LOVE Jimmy Johnson but don't see him getting back in the game :kicksrock:

I like David Shaw for Vikings head coach.

Also I would like to see the Vikings go to a 34 defense. I can't defend the cover 2 after this year.

None of those guys are ever returning to the sideline, IMO. I think maybe Gruden is the most likely, but I see him only going to a team with an established QB, as he's proven he can't develop a youngster.
 
Christian Ponder can't watch film and actually believe he's an NFL QB. There's just no way. Right?

He cannot stand in the pocket and see things develop. He cannot slide to avoid pressure in the pocket. I have yet to see him throw a receiver open or make a "back shoulder throw". Ever.

He can run a little, hit a checkdown and throw jump balls to Rudolph. That's it.

 
I turned it off with 10 minutes left of the 4th quarter.. At that point GB had yet to Punt, Ponder had 95 yards and had just gone 3 and out again..

Can't wait for Frazier to paint the :porked: on how poised Ponder was, what with 145 yards passing and no INTS!!!! :excited:

I would like to see them shop Jerome Simpson to the Pats for anything they can get. He would be good for them and doesn't have much salary and then Patterson could get on the field more.

good luck with that... Fraizer and Musgrave have a plan, and it doesn't include Patterson as being a big part of the team until 2015..

Well, at least that is the way it seems. :wall:

At this point he should be out there for 70%+ of the offensive plays.. i don't give a crap if he doesn't know the playbook well enough or not.. Send him out on Deep routes every single play.. Teams will have to cover him, possibly even drop a CB and Safety back thus opening it up for others.. Just completely idiotic to have him only out there as little as they are.

 
So what even is the difference this year? the Vikings were decent-to-good last year, seems like. pardon my ignorance but as far as i know the only big roster move was Percy Harvin, who was out with injury half the season anyway iirc. Does Peterson's downgrade from Career Year to Just Really Good Year explain the entire difference between a playoff appearance and what looks to be maybe a 2 or 3 win season? Is Ponder actually playing worse than last year? Is there something else going on?

Ponder is playing worse. He has no composure under pressure and the o-line is playing like ####. On defense their secondary went from bad to atrocious.

Last season they were winning close games. This season they are losing close games due to poor game management and coaching.

 
So I see sitting on the bench didn't help change Ponder's cliche response:

"I expected to play better," said Ponder, who completed 14 of 21 passes for 145 yards but didn't have an interception after throwing five in his first three games. "Our expectations are to go out there and win every game, and obviously we didn't meet expectations. I didn't meet expectations. I didn't play well enough for the offense to stay on the field, convert on third downs and put more points on the board.

Jesus Christ. The guy can't even admit when he makes mistakes. Giant red flag...as if him just plain sucking wasn't enough of a red flag.

I'm with the poster up above that said burn the whole team down top to bottom outside of Peterson & Patterson. Coaching staff as well. At some point Wilf is going to have to worry about being able to sell tickets to these games. There's no way I bring my family to a game where half the team mails in their performance and the coach is on the sideline yawning.

The Defense is giving up over 30 points a game and can't get off the field. There is no excuses for this when your head coach is a former DC. I wouldn't want Lovie Smith as a head coach but at least he could coach the D better than Frazier and Williams.
 
You guys need to be patient with Ponder. Last week he started wearing the eye black stickers. (Bad ### in a dome.) This week he let the beard grow out. (Looking TOUGH.) Next week he's hopefully sporting one of those Mike Tyson eye tats. (The wins are coming!)

On a side note. I paid extra attention to good old number seven dropping back to pass last night. It's amazing how fast his head turns and lazer locks on his one and only receiver.

It's just embarrassing with the receiving weapons the Vikings have that defenses still don't respect the passing game enough not to load up the middle of the field to stop Peterson. Unreal.

 
Short answer to last year vs this year is that last year was a fluke. Most of us predicted this kind of season last year.

 
I had high hopes after the draft and free agent signings. But, not only is the qb position bad, but we are weak at so many other areas.

 
In all my years as a Viking fan I have never felt the way I do watching this year.. indifference.. I just don't care and haven't thought twice the last 2 games about choosing sleep over staying up to the end..

Truly makes me :( I feel this way but that is what a Frazier coached team has left me..

I'll still turn on the games because I Love the game and am still bleeding purple.

You just won't hear any over excitement cheering or anger yelling coming from the Snogger household the rest of this year :kicksrock:

 
You fellas think there is any danger in me taking the Cowboys in my Survivor pool this week? There's almost $10K on the line.

You know I'd give you guys a straight answer if you asked the same question in the Raiders thread. :)

 
If I was in any survivor pools and hadn't used Dallas yet, I'd absolutely use them this week. At home. Heartbreaking loss this week. Needing the win badly. Should be as close to a lock as any game this year.

:goodposting: Drives me nuts, that every time I see him on the sideline (not just the camera cuts either) he's just standing there glaring. Dude, jump up and down, scream at the refs or SOMETHING!

I still remember AP's first play of the year :tebow: , thinking it's going to be a great season. Now....not so much. :sadbanana:

 
I don't watch many Minn games but is this team really THAT bad? They seem to have a lot of talent, perhaps young talent. QB looks like a glaring weakness but otherwise they should be better IMO.

yea I usually go to one or two games a year...went to that carolina game and that was the first time ever I left early, and we are talking like 4 mins into the 3rd leaving early. Embarassing that I would rather watch other games in the bar across the street. Only positive is when hockey really gets rolling next month I don't have to bother recording vikes games for later when I'm coaching my kids hockey games, don't care like most seasons.... :-/

A defensive squad that has a bunch of young players at CB and safety with no true leader ala Winfield.. a aging DL line.. on the Offensive side, No QB and REALLY bad coaching have led to a disaster.

Our hope as Viking fans is to look at the 2-14 Chiefs of last year and where they are today with a million times better coaching and a QB that can be trusted not to lose games.

I'm a little tired of Vikings coaches who don't get involved. Remember Tice? Same thing. He just stood there with his pencil in behind his ear, chewing bum, with a blank dead look on his face. Denny Green too. Hell we may have to go all the way back to Burnsie to find one that would consider slapping a ref.

 
An interesting (albiet goofy) column, I'd be willing to roll with this even though it would be highly unlikely. At worst, maybe it's good for a chuckle during this terrible vikings season.

The "Tank for Teddy" bandwagon is filling fast, but the word on the street is that the Vikings are eyeballing Mariota. Unfortunately, I don't have a clever rhyme or alliteration for the Mariota campaign. I'd love to hear some suggestions.

Looking six months ahead, the possible scenarios are numerous. What if the Buccaneers and Jaguars lose out and grab Bridgewater and Mariota with the first two picks? There would almost certainly be a team willing to trade up with the Vikings for the chance to take Clowney… again, assuming the Draft order remains the same as it is today. Should the Vikings attempt to trade up and assure themselves of getting Mariota or Bridgewater? Should they trade down a few spots, let someone else take Clowney, and grab Hundley for themselves?

Or how about this zany scenario: stay at No. 3 and take Clowney and then trade back up into the the first round to take Manziel. Taking the two highest-profile players in the upcoming draft would create a huge buzz and an onslaught of media attention. It would certainly sell tickets.

It could also hasten the Vikings' rebuilding process.

Listen, the Vikings need help at positions other than quarterback. The defense has holes all over the place and could lose some linemen in free agency. By all accounts Clowney is a game-changing end capable of electrifying a defense. Why not grab him and then take Johnny Football? It would definitely be a gamble. Bridgewater, Mariota and Hundley all feel like safer picks and the Vikings simply can't afford any more misfires in finding a quarterback. They have to get it right this time.

Manziel is an absolute wildcard. There are many (probably many reading this) who believe he has little shot of succeeding in the NFL. There are even more who detest his off-the-field partying and other assorted shenanigans.

I get that I'm on the unpopular side of this, but I think Manziel has a shot – a good shot -- of becoming a quality NFL quarterback. To those who say he's too small, I'd point out he's listed as 6-1, 210. Yes, that probably means he's closer to 6-0, 205. Drew Brees is generously listed at 6-0, 209. Russell Wilson is 5-11, 206. Small is a problem if you don't have tremendous talent. Brees and Wilson do. So does Manziel.

I'm a Manziel believer. His ability to extend plays with his legs is unmatched. His ability to lead and single-handedly will an offense into the end zone is uncanny. His arm is bigger and more accurate than you think. He makes the smart play more often than you think. He's not just a gunslinger and he doesn't lock in on primary receivers.

We might as well kick-start the discussion now, Vikings fans. Who do you want to see your team take in the NFL Draft? Bridgewater? Mariota? Hundley? Is anyone willing to join me on my wacky, improbable Clowney and Manziel bandwagon? Any other options you'd rather see?

Or should they just tank in 2014 as well and take FSU's Jameis Winston in 2015? He's already being called "the next Andrew Luck."

This has to be very difficult on Monte Kiffin. Do we prepare for the guy who misses receivers by 10 feet or do we prepare for the guy who misses receivers by 12 feet???

I listened to David Shaw on Dan Patrick show today. Shaw is very articulate and intelligent. He also said that he thinks Mariota is the best QB in the nation.

Unfortunately, it also sounds like he loves Stanford. Vikings might not be able to lure him away. My dream of getting coach Shaw and Mariota in Minnesota will probably remain a dream.
