As a Giants fan I wouldn't mind seeing Ware line up opposite of JPPmark my words, he'll wind up in the division kicking romo's ###
Denver is very interested and in a win now mode.mark my words, he'll wind up in the division kicking romo's ###
"Reaching" being the operative verb here. The Cowboys made their first move of the free-agency period on Day 2, by reaching an agreement with defensive tackle Terrell McClain on a three-year deal according to multiple sources.
8 tackles in 16 games last year.
ughhhhh.
Excellent posting. I don't understand how any fan of this team can still be clinging to this fantasy of a deep playoff run, let alone a Super Bowl victory with this group. All those who have posted here saying "we're just a piece or two away" or "just a tweak here or there" have just not been paying attention. None whatsoever.Ariakis said:Being a long-time (suffering) fan of the Cubs it pains me to say it but the same apathy that has hit Cubs fans over the past few seasons seems to be making it's way to my football team in Dallas. It's still the NFL but man I think it's getting more and more obvious that this team is going to be at a competitive disadvantage until Jerry quite literally dies or atleast grows too old to run the organization. Even then the nepotism will push things to his even less competent son so where is the hope?
Being competitive is about all we can hope for and from that stand-point for the past several seasons atleast games mattered down the stretch. Even that simply HAS to come to an end with the way they are bungling the financial aspect of the game. At this point nothing short of a cleansing will turn things around. Sure ... for this season we'll be right where we've been for awhile ... on the fringe of contention if things break perfectly ... but with our typical lack of depth ... we'll run out of steam in the end. Could this team surprise and actually do well deep into the postseason? Sure ... but realism suggests otherwise.
I don't think a firesale has to lead to many years of poor play but a "catch-up" year seems all but assured. Will Jerry be willing? Come out of it in great cap space and with a high pick to find a new franchise QB if you don't snag one this year to groom. Stop pushing contracts and just take the hit in 2015.
I dont have a problem losing either one of these 2.. Hatcher came through big in a contract year, and will get a $$$ contract he wont live up to at his age. Those are the contracts that have gotten us to the point we are now..The Man With No Name said:Hatcher is visiting Washington and they are interested in Spencer too![]()
I would take Spencer back on a show me 1-2 year deal. Hatcher is all about getting paid, so he's gone.I dont have a problem losing either one of these 2.. Spencer just cant stay on the field. If it were a 1 or 2 year incentive laden contract, ok..
I don;t think failing to keep ware is evidence that anyone is thinking at all, let alone thinking about the future. I don't for one second think that Jerry thinks anything other than this team was 1 game from the playoffs and if they make the playoffs they can go on a run like the giants or ravens and win it all.I don't know if its Garrett or Stephen, or both, but someone there is having Jerry's ear about long term thinking. They clearly were in the "win now" mentality with FA signings in 2011. And to a certain degree last year with the proposed starting DL. Obviously it all fell apart. And the powers that be seem to recognize that they aren't close to a SB.
They could have kept Ware. Cap space could have been made by restructuring Witten and Carr. But they chose not to push old money forward.
The only guys on the roster over 30 are now Witten, Romo, and Free. Don't be at all surprised if Free's replacement is drafted in round 1 or 2 this year. Oh, and Witten's replacement was drafted in round 2 last year.
Now they have cap space to extend Tyron and Dez. Those guys and Lee are the leaders going forward.
Someone is thinking long term in Valley Ranch. Is it Jason? Stephen? Or both????
If this is true, and the Cowboys do sign him, seems like the long-term thinking mentioned above goes out the window."Multiple sources" tell ESPN Dallas the Cowboys have interest in free agent Julius Peppers.
It's the first we've heard of Peppers since his Tuesday release. Reporter Todd Archer's report has no mention of a potential visit. Peppers would be reuniting with former Bears DC Rod Marinelli in Dallas, whom he played for from 2010-12 in Chicago. The fact that the Cowboys are interested means they believe Peppers could be signed for (far) less than the three-year, $30 million deal DeMarcus Ware landed in Denver. Peppers certainly isn't going to match Ware, but he's not going to be a bargain, either. Mar 14 - 1:45 PM
How can you go into rebuild mode with Romo? The Cowboys are sort of in a "no man's land" in trying to get better. 3 years of 8-8 means they are never drafting that high so they are not getting a lot of exceptional talent from the draft. They hit on Smith and Bryant but seemed to have missed on Claiborne. As for free agents, the cap is hamstringing them this year, so they can't add alot through free agency. By the time they can add enough talent to help Romo win big, they may not have an effective Romo anymore.
I think they should be in rebuild mode, but Jerry can't bring himself to do that
I see your point. I would say with the cap room that they have now, don't try and bring in anyone for this year that has any substantial cap hit in future years (like a Julius Peppers). Do the same thing next year and don't restructure anyone's contract unless you have to do that to get under the cap. Restructuring contracts to sign free agents needs to be put on hold for a few years. If he can holdoff doing that until 2016 than the Cowboy's should be out of cap hell by then. How can you go into rebuild mode with Romo? The Cowboys are sort of in a "no man's land" in trying to get better. 3 years of 8-8 means they are never drafting that high so they are not getting a lot of exceptional talent from the draft. Romo's contract alone means he's with the Cowboys at least through 2015.
Suddenly, as if overnight, there has been a shift to a long-term strategy? I'd say that's optimistic and would be phenomenal, if true. I don't see the fact that they were forced into cutting Ware as a result of their cap position/strategy as evidence of a shift in philosophy. But, it's mighty kind of you to suggest.Ridgelake said:I don't know if its Garrett or Stephen, or both, but someone there is having Jerry's ear about long term thinking. But why? We aren't winning anything with this group. I'd rather we kept Ware a cowboy for life then bring in a worse version of him at a bargain.Peppers went to Green Bay so he's off the list.
I think they are going to go after Jared Allen if he's reasonable on compensation.
Having Peppers go puts him in a better negotiation position now, so not sure if he's going to come cheap.
I would like him in the $6-$7MM range per year on a short deal.
Otherwise, draft heavy DE and DT.
Ware is gone, it's over. Get him in the Cowboys ROH ASAP. Later it will be the NFL HOF.But why? We aren't winning anything with this group. I'd rather we kept Ware a cowboy for life then bring in a worse version of him at a bargain.Peppers went to Green Bay so he's off the list.

Why invest money in an aging DE when we clearly don't have a team that will compete on any meaningful level? Or is the thinking that we are still in 2014 playoff mode here? Allen has had more sacks each year in 4 of the past 5 years than Ware. SO, not a worse version as you stated.
To replace Ware, he's a great option left on the market. However, it has to be the right price based on his age.
You can't replace Ware and Hatcher with average FA's or Rookies. Allen is a force and will help occupy the double teams Ware and Hatcher did when they were here. Why invest money in an aging DE when we clearly don't have a team that will compete on any meaningful level? Exactly why Allen shouldn't even be considered. You can't replace Ware and Hatcher with average FA's or Rookies. Allen is a force and will help occupy the double teams Ware and Hatcher did when they were here.IF we can get him for $6-$7MM a year. You could just not replace those guys and build with the draft and Marinelli magic players but that will definitely take several years for those guys to develop.
Look at the last few years drafts and you'll see that even highly rated DT's and DE's take a few years to really get going.
We are a few years away from the playoffs and a serious run.
