I think we will at least reach out to him to check in once FA starts. It would be silly not to at least give him a ring.

 
I'd love to see Byrd land in our nest, but is he really worth $10M+ a year? Weddle and Goldson are pulling down about 8 mil/year. I know we've got plenty of cap room, but we do have other holes to fill.

And we're probably going to need a fat slab of cap room next year to lock up Foles...

Cleveland franchising Mack would make me believe Ward will become a FA. Eagles will certainly have the opportunity to make a splash.

Ugh, I really want Ward!!!! I know we don't want to overspend on guys, but I'd rather him over any FA in the league this year.

I think Howie values an individual player as opposed to Banner and Reid's positional philosophy. So if they value Byrd or Ward as top talents, I don't think price will hinder them from grabbing either. They can work things in to make room for Foles contract and other defenders.

 
If they move XP's to be a 43 yard kick, we might need to bump up the priority of replacing Henery...

Or we'll just go for two every time, which with McCoy and Cooper might be the better play.

Eagles release Jason Avant.

Not surprising. Great guy. Good locker room presence. Just a bit too long in the tooth for this offense now though. Probably end up in KC.

 
Solid slot guy, excellent hands. Now who plays the slot? DJax, Cooper, Maclin don't really fit the bill IMO. Rookie or FA opening here, certainly need to bring in a guy to challenge Damaris Johnson at WR4.

Pretty sure Arrelious Benn is still on the roster. Does he fit in anywhere or will he be released?

That would be best...it would almost be silly to have a newbie mind the slot while Cooper and Maclin are rotating.

 
Yes, my point being WR4 is now D. Johnson and A. Benn. Clearly we have room to add a WR via draft or FA. And, I'd like a slot guy, the Avant role of going across the middle and making tough catches has a role in this offense. Not sure that has ever been Maclin's best role, and I love Maclin's game! Very excited to see what Chip can do with another quick skill player on the offense, with all the other starters returning.

 
Chip does not use the slot WR the same way Andy did - so there is really no telling how Maclin will produce in this role.

 
Also as the season went on Chip used Celek and Ertz more and more. That could have just been personnel driven but he may like the 2-TE's and just want more options at WR, which is what I believe.

I was thinking about this the other day. The slot position is really just another blocker in Chip's offense. Or atleast what we saw last year. It seems that most, if not all plays have option reads. Primary read with 2 options and secondary read with 2 options. To me it looks like Chips offense was mis direction and underneath as the Primary option, with the secondary reads as down the field bombs. This in a since gets the ball in the playmakers hands.

Whereas Andy used the playmakers to open up the underneath hence why RBs, TEs and the slot played an major role. Hell even FBs got plenty of looks.

I really like what Chip has done and I beleive we havn't seen anything yet. Chip came in here to establish a program. You can't do that in 1 season.

He'll be fighting for a roster spot. Just can't rely on him to stay healthy.

I don't disagree but I wouldn't want us hedging our bets on him making a transition like that when we could potentially fix our FS and SS via draft and FA with actual safeties.

I'm really interested to see what Howie does. Originally I said that I can't see him going after him or Ward but I didnt expect both to be availible. Having both should keep the price from going nuts. Also, they're both former Ducks and Billy Davis coached Ward when in Cleveland so they should have a better then average idea of what type of characters they'd be getting. As it stands now, there's no good reason that I can think of for us not getting one.

The Eagles are expected to split slot reps between DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper.
Jason Avant was the Eagles primary slot receiver last season, playing on 858-of-1159 snaps (74.0 percent) and posting a 38-447-2 line on 76 targets. Jackson saw a career-high 26 percent of his snaps out of the slot, making him the leading candidate to move inside this year. However, we're expecting Chip Kelly to run more "12" formations featuring Zach Ertz and Brent Celek, leaving Cooper and Maclin to rotate situationally.

I didn't notice Avant played that many snaps. 50% catch rate was pretty bad for someone with proven hands and football savvy.

 
Amid swirling rumors that DeSean Jackson could be trade bait or a cap casualty...

Trading or cutting DeSean just wouldn't make any sense to me. I understand the speculation - he's got an onerous cap number, he's making waves about his contract, deep WR draft class, buyer's market for FA receivers. All reasons that could justify such a move. But Jackson was a huge part of this team's success last season, and we're primed to take a step forward this season. We should be able to close the gap on defense through free agency and the draft. Why risk taking a step back on offense?

If Jackson's cap number is the real concern, couldn't they convert a large portion of this year's salary to a bonus, thus allowing them to spread out the cap hit over the remaining 3 years? I can understand that they may not want to be seen as caving in to a petulant player, but management has to look at the big picture.

I don't see DJax going anywhere this year. Next year though - we'll want to start locking up Foles (hopefully), Cox, Boykin - we'll have alot of money tied up in the offense with Djax, Cooper, McCoy - I don't think we'll keep him after that. Wouldn't be surprised to see us take a WR or two this draft to get a look at a possible replacement...

 
Don't follow the Eagles much and wanted some help from you homers. I picked up Foles in FA in a dynasty and am mostly sold on him. However, I have a few questions on how you guys think the Eagles work offensively and what you think the future will look like.

Here's what I understand. It's an uptempo offense designed to run as many plays as possible. It is run heavy.

I just subscribed to PFF and looked over the analytic numbers. Wowsers. Darn near every Eagle had a career year on offense.

The line is ridiculously dominant. I wasn't surprised to see them reupping some of your key guys to multiyears.

McCoy graded out as the top RB by far and even surpassed the grades of ADP and CJ2K when they had 2,000 yard seasons if I remember correctly.

The receivers played well.

Surprisingly, despite his astronomical NFL QB rating where he eclipsed even Peyton Manning's record setting 2013 season to lead the league, NIck Foles graded out outside of a Top 12 PFF grade at the position. Still had a very good positive grade but I was shocked.

Would you guys elaborate a little more details on the run scheme and what type of passing attack the Eagles employ?

In addition, do you see the Eagles improving next season as Foles "develops" or do you see the rest of the league catching up to Kelly much the way the zone reads have been slowed down after a couple years?

Further, would you guys bank on Foles moving forward as the franchise QB, which seems ludicrous if you look at NFL stats alone and not graded, play by play tape, or do you see a scenario where a guy could come in and supplant him. I remember an after season presser, perhaps coachspeak to "motivate Tatum Bell", where Kelly said Foles said he would have competition. I don't for instance see a chance of the Eagles drafting a QB super high however given the holes on defense. But, this is why I'm asking the question. Again, could you see the Eagles drafting a Marcus Mariota or other QB even late that could develop and eventually outplay Foles?

Questions abound, and I'm sure you guys are ecstatic at the progress and promise the team showed under Kelly's first year. Had Foles had the full season as starter and the Birds been a little stronger defensively in 2013, who knows? Albeit, I'm sure you guys are not reminiscing at this point about Reid's last season at the helm and are really moving on to the future.

Is Kelly really that good? Will there be a regression?

One things for sure, Kelly left a winning brand of football at Oregon. I saw in person the Ducks use Kelly's blueprint this year and summarily annihilate the Virginia Cavaliers in 2013. Of course, most teams did, I also saw Sammy Watkins abuse the Cavs. However, one things for sure, this guy is some kind of revolution. Question is, what lies ahead? I don't know much but I do respect that Kelly is very much ahead of his time. Enlighten me guys.

Pure NFL fan perspective can't do it as I'm a Panthers homer but fantasy? All in. My only caveat on Foles was the PFF grade albeit it was positive. You can't argue with the production.

I'd really have to nitpick if I were looking at a floor for the Eagles on offense as I believe Kelly may be a dynastic type of football mind. I'm angling for more opinion and information to assess the upside for fantasy as the bus has already left the building and I'm not sure there's tons of value to be had. However, some people are still not all in on Foles and the Eagles as a whole. Myself, after looking at the grades offensively for this season, I think this is a historic type of offense, system, and philosophy and with some improvements on defense, I think the Eagles could blow the doors of the whole thing. Finally, I'd certainly take the odds offseason for the money on the Eagles for the 2014 championship.

I'm intrigued which is why I'm trying to learn more. I'd already put Kelly as one of the Top elite handful of coaches in the NFL. I really think I'd rather have him than Harbaugh and if you gave him Tom Brady or Drew Brees I think he'd be as successful as the wonderkind Bellicheck or Payton.

Finally, ---- what I'm selfishly trying to learn with Foles given I own him in dynasty is, is it the system and surrounding cast, or is it him? I'm a believer in dynasty in talent over situation as talent eventually prevails and wins out as there is so much competition. I'll more than likely enjoy the Top Tier numbers Foles will more than likely produce in 2014 but for longetivty's sake, would I want to go all in on him as a cornerstone? After the defense is fixed, will Kelly bring in his guy to better the team despite decent production and numbers from Foles, ala, Kapernick relieving Smith?

I want the guy who's going to be the Eagles QB that IS an elite talent as well. Then you have the best of both worlds, talent plus culture.

For his second season, first in Kelly's system, and coming in out of the bullpen the second half of the season, I'd be very happy if I were a Birds fan with the grade Foles came up with. However, individually, he did not grade out as elite in 2013 despite what the numbers say. There's a difference between the scout's eye and statistics and I'm wondering if Chip sold himself on Foles as his Nicky Franchise.

Eagles aren't going to get anyone this draft who could potentially usurp Foles, so he's the starter 2014. There certainly is a question as to how he'll perform with a year of defensive coordinators getting tape on him and the Eagles system. Still, the run game is gotta be the #1 priority to stop in this offense, so Foles isn't going to see defenses selling out to stop the pass too often.

Is he elite? He made terrific progress in year two - guess we'll see where he goes in year three. Certainly hope so!

I'd be buying on Ertz, personally, I think he's going to make a good jump in year 2,.

Chip reminds me of modern day Madden players. All of the plays and concepts already have adjustments built in pre and post snap. It's still a talent driven league. When you have this OL + McCoy and Foles decision making and anticipation + WR who excel deep and after the catch its a match made in heaven.

They should try to find that player in my book. Every team should. The odds of it happening are not that high. We just drafted Matt Barkley for crying out loud.

I'll say yes again. The adjustments are already being made. Now we just need a little more talent in a few places. Maybe the regression will come from a more difficult schedule.
