** Official 2014 Philadelphia Eagles Thread ** (1 Viewer)

I've been re-watching some games from the second half of last season and paying more attention to the D and noticed much more improvement from Kendricks than I'd given him credit for in the past. Was kind of 50/50 on him at first look but he has improved significantly against the run. He's developed a knack for using lateral quickness to beat a block in tight space without running around it like small LBs usually do. He comes forwards with much more commitment as well.

Coverage wise he's still a mixed bag. Seems to be at his best when they use his range in zone coverage, like shooting him to the flat or having him show blitz in the A gap then dropping deep to cut off curl or dig type routes. In man he still seems to struggle although he has the athletic ability to stay with any RB/TE and probably a few slot WRs as well. Good example is the long wheel route to the TE near the goal line in the Bears game. Kendricks seemed to just let him go by and follow him.

Looking forward to seeing how he develops this year. Been a long time since we had a real playmaker at LB.
Love hearing your breakdowns... hopefully you can do a recap similar to last year but after each game!

The Eagles just called me and gave me 2 tickets to go to the NovaCare Complex tomorrow to watch practice from 11-3. Has anyone ever done this before? What's it like?
That's pretty sweet. I've been to NovaCare a couple times, for team events during the season. But never a practice. And now that I've surrendered my season tickets, I suppose I never will. We'll be expecting a recap upon your return.

I'll recap what I saw on Monday. It was one of the most awesome things I've done. If anyone gets the opportunity I highly recommend it. If anyone knows how to post pictures I put some up.

Imgur or any free pic hosting site should be quick and easy to set up and post the links.

If anyone does software development, Eagles are hiring... Season tickets are a benefit! I interviewed, but I'm a little overqualified.

My day at training camp on Saturday:

Arrived at the NovaCare complex at 11 am and parked in the visitors parking lot. I proceeded to the gates where the Eagles had a will-call tent set up. I received a color coded guest pass (yellow) and entered the practice fields where tents were set up based on the color coded passes and my tent was with the other season ticket holders (about 50 of us) in the Retzlaff tent.

Upon arriving at the tent they handed out rally towels, hand sanitizer, sun screen and beach balls. There were also training camp booklets for everybody. Each tent provided free catered lunch from Chickie and Pete's. Salads, fruit cups, cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks, mussels, ham and cheese sliders, lunch meat wraps, crab fries, desserts and an assortment of drinks. They were also giving out free Rita's Water Ice on the field.

They had yellow lines that you couldn't go past but it didn't matter because you were 2 feet from the field. At around 11:45 the team came out and stretched. For anyone who hasn't seen it live, Kelly's practices waste no time. They have boards set up with timers. A voice will come up over the speaker system and say "Period 1, individuals" and the different groups will work on something for 5 minutes or so. Then there will be a horn and the voice will say "Period 2, team" and everyone will run to the designated field and work on something and so on an so forth. They had different signals like I said earlier, individuals, team, instructional, special teams (I'm sure there were more but I don't remember). I was sitting in the stands for a bit in front of John Gonzalez and Geoff Mosher and the other reporters. They were mostly talking about how good the Sixers were going to be in a few years. Peter King was walking around, man does he look old in person.

The one drill I thought was neat was the passing drills. They had the 4 QBs in camp (Foles, Sanchez, Barkley and Kinne) plus another guy who wasn't in uniform so I guess he was a ball boy or something all lined up. Then the WRs, RBs and TEs would run 5 different routes. Two would be in the flat, one short cross, one long cross and one bomb. Depending on where you were in line you would throw one of the routes and then move down the line to get a different throw. IMO, Sanchez look especially good. He had the strongest arm of the group and was money on each and every throw. Foles look pretty good too but Sanchez really stood out to me. Barkley didn't look very good, a lot of ducks and not much arm strength.

After about an hour of doing different drills they started doing special teams drills. They had two kickers. Henery and Spears. Spears is a really tiny guy and from what I saw didn't have the same leg strength that Henery did. They did field goals first and Henery hit the post with his first kick from about 45 yard or so. Then they did some more drills before coming back and doing kickoff return coverage. Henery was kicking the ball about 4 yards deep in the end zone, the other guy about the same. Sproles looked pretty good doing the kickoffs. Brandon Boykin look especially fast when he did the returns. Sproles looks even smaller in person but the guy is shifty as hell.

Then they did 11 v 11's and some other drills before calling practice when it started to rain and Ed Reynolds and Huff collided. Wheel routes were the play of the 11 v 11's with Sproles burning a LB on one for a nice gain. Jenkins and Nate Allen were the safeties running with the starters at the first practice. Villanueva might not make the team, but he is a massive human being. I think he was the biggest dude I've ever seen.

After practice we were asked to return to our tents where a player came and signed autographs for us. We got Nate Allen. He was really nice. Don Smolenski (Eagles Pres.) came around and shook out hands thanking us for coming out. All in all was a great experience.

Nice, thanks for sharing..was hoping you caught the skirmish between Shady and TCole, but I think that was yesterday...

The fifth QB was pat shurmur's son, going to Vandy next year.

A lot of people over the age of 45 will like this. I'm not a fan of it. Let the past stay in the past. Bust it out for the occasional throwback game but otherwise the new unis are what I know the Eagles as.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! ;)

i hear ya though, not sure I want a return to it full time, maybe just replace the stupid black alternates a couple times a season.

Kevin Greene was with the Eagles for two days. He said this today during an interview:

"Marcus Smith has the potential to be a real, special player." Also said Smith reminded him of Clay Matthews, who Greene coached for a few years in Green Bay.

That's pretty cool. Haven't heard much about Smith.

I actually like the new uniforms a lot better.
Worst post ever

Yea I sure can't wait to get back to the days where I can't tell my team from the Jets.

For real. The Kelly green color is awful...like rotting vegetables.

I might feel different had the Eagles had any real success in the formative years of my life (I'm 44), but all the real success I've seen has been in the newer uni's. The darker green is much easier on the eyes and the newer bird looks better than the silly wings.

No.

As much as it's trendy to want to go back to vintage uniforms and everyone wants to like the old uniforms for that reason, the new ones ARE better. I'd love to bust the old ones out for a couple times a year, but c'mon, changing all the logos, flags, stickers, signs, uniforms, shirts, etc etc just to go back to a plain light green uniform is stupid when there's nothing that wrong with the new ones, nor nothing that great about the old ones.

The 5 best matchups to watch on Friday night

By Eliot Shorr-Parks | NJ.com

After nine practices of going against each other, the Eagles players are finally going to get a chance to hit somebody else on Friday night when they open up their preseason against the Chicago Bears.

"I'm looking forward to it," said tight end Zach Ertz. "Hopefully I'm the one laying the hit, and not getting my clock rung."

Although the starters will not play for long, the Eagles have their work cut out for them with the Bears, one of the better teams in the NFC.

Here are five matchups that will really give coaches on both teams a chance to evaluate their own players.

Allen Barbre vs. Lamarr Houston:
Barbre, the Eagles new starting right tackle, will have his work cut out for him from the first snap of the season. Houston, who was signed away from the Oakland Raiders this offseason, will be a good first test to see how Barbre can hold up against some of the better pass rushers in the league. Barbre will only be lined up against Houston for 10-15 snaps, so the sample size won't be great. If he gives up a sack though, some red flags will start to be raised, since Barbre's impressive play last season was in very limited action.

Bradley Fletcher vs. Alshon Jeffery:
Fletcher isn't exactly battling for his job, but being out there with the starters in Week 1 vs. Jacksonville is no guarantee for the veteran. Newly-signed cornerback Nolan Carroll likely won't play against the Bears, so Fletcher will be given a chance to put some distance between himself and the backup. Fletcher did a good job in the Eagles' matchup with the Bears last season against the big, physical Jeffreys, holding him to one catch for 10 yards.

Fletcher Cox vs. Matt Slauson:
The best offensive lineman the Bears have is Slauson, and the best defensive lineman the Eagles have is Cox. The two will be lined up across from each other on Friday, and it gives Cox a chance to get an important season for him off to a good start. It's just the preseason, but watching Cox matched up with Slauson is going to give both sets of coaches a good chance to evaluate each player.

Ifeanyi Momah vs. Kyle Fuller:
Fuller was a cornerback the Eagles showed plenty of interest in prior to the NFL draft. His size (6-foot-0), however, didn't exactly fit in with the Eagles vision of long cornerbacks. Fuller is a backup for now on the Bears, but the first-round pick will likely get some reps against the Eagles' first-team offense. Watching Fuller cover the 6-foot-7 Momah will be a good test for both players, as it is a matchup that Momah should be able to win.

Darren Sproles vs. Bears linebackers:
The Eagles have been clear that they are not going to unveil all of their plans in using Sproles this preseason, but it is hard to imagine they won't be splitting him out wide a fair amount of times on Friday. Seeing how the Eagles are able to take advantage of the matchups Sproles gets will be interesting to watch.

Watching the Dolphins/Falcons preseason game as I get ready for the Bears game. Their offense looked good. Falcons defense sucks but it's funny that people thought Chip's offense wouldn't work and one year later a team's already using a version of it.

Not going to be able to watch the Eagles live. Two or three games being shown here, none of them that one. :(

The expectations for Foles this season are so unrealistic.
Mikey Miss calling for a playoff win or Foles should be cut. Seems realistic. Foles critics have just set the bar higher since they know they were shut up last year.

What's Miami doing on offense? The copycats have started already huh?

I really do think Chip has a whole other level he's been sitting on for this league. People have been studying his film but what do they think hes been doing? He has no family. He has no girlfriend. He has no hobbies. All he does is eat, sleep, breath football. He's got things we've never seen before ready to go.
